Will the Senate shut down the ‘Clunkers’ program?

It seems that  the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program is in danger of being cut short by  the Senate .  Money from the program has increased traffic in the nations car dealerships, and given the auto industry a much needed boost.  Some senators are worried because they have too many things to deal with this week before they take their summer recess. This program has moved out 250,000 new vehicles!…….surely a few more billion dollars added to the program won’t break the budget…and will definitely help the economy………

  1. I wonder if you’re mocking the program? This quick infusion of cash to get rid of the clunkers will have some long term negative effects.

In the immediacy, a lot of cars have been sold. In the longer vision, someone, us, will have to pay for it.

Perhaps I should feel better that my tax increase will pay for someone’s new car.

    Thanks for letting me comment.

    • no….I’m not at all……I think the program is one bright spot of the administration………and your tax increase will help the economy start to get back on it’s feet.

  2. Well, if you believe the President then there will be no new taxes for families making under $250,000 a year. So only the rich folks will be paying for my new car. Four out of the five top selling cars in the cash for clunkers deal are from the Japanese car makers. The only positive is that most of those cars are made in Toyota and Honda factories in the U.S. So hpefully this will help an ailing industry get through the recession.

  3. Any thoughts on the T. Boone Pickens and Ted Turner idea for a cash for clunkers program for high CO2 power plants to be replaced with lower or non-CO2 power plants? They published an op-ed in the wall street journal a few days ago.

  5. Well, well ……FOX news IS reporting that the program will end on this Monday…….the number of applications reported in the system is around 400,000…….making the program a great success. I’m sure OBama didn’t and couldn’t go back to well again…now it’s up to the dealers and manufactures to keep the sales going……..as for the dealerships that are complaining about getting paid…….anybody dealing with the government be it local, state or federal knows you don’t paid right away…these guys had to know that since they run multi-million dollars companies in their dealerships…….their banks will give them credit for money due from the Feds……

  6. …….the number has jumped to almost 500,000 cars…………….with $400 million in rebate money available on early Friday……..but a good amount of dealers stopped taking applications right after the annoucement that the program would cease as of Monday………
