President Obama accepts the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo…..

The President of the United States accepted the Nobel peace Prize today……

And with his acceptance he acknowledged the people who wonder how could a President, who is the Commander-in-Chief of a country that is in fighting conflicts all over the planet, get the award for ‘Peace’?

The president went right back at them…Acknowledging that ….”We will not eradicate violet conflict in out life times”….

…He also went on to say this….“I face the world as it is, and cannot stand idle in the face of threats to the American people,” said Obama, adding it is difficult to reconcile the peace prize in an age of global terrorism.

He said sometimes the use of force is necessary.

“A nonviolent movement could not have halted Hitler’s armies. Negotiations cannot convince al Qaeda’s leaders to lay down their arms.”

A long time ago I was a student at Brooklyn College in New York…..I took a course on ‘War’ given by an East European by the name of Bela’ Kirali (the last name is probably not spelled correctly)…he was a big guy…..Robust…with silver hair……I will never for get some of things the professor said…..

‘War’,’he said…. ‘was natural for human beings’….He looked at us in class (this was in the late 1960’s ….Viet Nam Time)…he informed us…’you can count the years when there was no war anywhere in the world, on your fingers’……’man is an aggressive animal…remember that’…….

And he was right….Though there where demonsrtations on campus…and shootings at Kent State….We still live with war in foreign lands…..

President Obama received the Prize because the committee wanted to commend him for NOT being George Bush…..

But for embracing diplomacy….for his efforts to repair the U.S. image abroad, by adhering to the Geneva convention, and trying to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba……and for his call for a world free of nuclear weapons…..

The award was for a hope for a better world….and I cannot blame then for dreaming, and pushing this President to reach for these goals……

Navigating the south as a black candidate after Obama's election to President….

Rep. Artur Davis is trying become the black Governor of Alabama….the south has not a black governor for at least one hundred and thirty years…..Davis is trying to break that record…and one would believe having the nation’s first black president would make it easier…but that does seem to be true……

Davis , running as a democrat currently does well in the polls, but has had to walk a tightrope in the white and black communities of the state…..

He is aware that being black in the sSouth means that you have to skew your politics to the right, to accommodate the southern whites usual right leanings……so while Davis has done so…recently voting against the Healthcare Bill in Congress…..That has put him in trouble with many blacks who overwhelming favor the government providing universal healthcare….

And Davis has got himself in trouble with Joe Reed, a influential black in Alabama politics ( he works for the Alabama Education Association ) who has …savaged Davis as a political opportunist who opposed the bill to curry favor with the state’s conservative-leaning white majority.’

Reed further went on…….“You cannot curse Bubba and Cooter, Big Man and June Bug in the daytime and beg them at night.”

But, for Davis this argument cuts both ways…..While it might hurt him with some black voters…the noise from Reed may indeed help him with white voters who may see the complaining from Reed as a sign that Davis is independent of the old time blacks….Which is something the Obama campaign used last year…..

The fact remains that President Obama only picked up 10% of the white vote in the state…and wether Reed likes it or not ….Running for Governor is forcing Davis to try to attract white voters…there is simply no other way to win a statewide office…..But he must also try to hold as many blacks as a base….

This is going to be VERY, VERY hard for Davis to do…….

Mark Stanford…..Will keep his job…..but this is his swan song….

The embattled Governor of South Carolina has survived an attempt to turn him out of office…..but his political capital is gone…..

The story in The State:

Sanford has been under scrutiny since June, when he returned from a clandestine five-day trip to Argentina and admitted an extramarital affair. Media, the State Ethics Commission and lawmakers have spent the past six months reviewing Sanford’s use of state aircraft, business-class airfare and campaign funds.

Wednesday, the governor said 37 pending State Ethics Commission charges amounted to – at most – minor and technical oversights.

While Sanford’s offenses were called “seriously stupid” – the words of state Rep. Garry Smith, R-Greenville – six of the seven impeachment panel members agreed they were not impeachable.

“We can’t impeach for hypocrisy. We can’t impeach for arrogance. We can’t impeach … for his lack of leadership skills,” said committee chairman state Rep. Jim Harrison, R-Richland, arguing there were not grounds to remove Sanford from office.

The story comes from Charles Lemos over at mydd.com…..

American's have President Obama's back on the Afghan 'surge'…..

An NY Times/CBS News Poll confirms that a small, but nevertheless majority of Americans, right now….

The poll has 51% of Americans’ behind the Presidents deployment of addition troops to the Afghan countryside’s to fight and hold terrain against the Taliban and any vestiges of the al-Qaeda in the country…..

But there is this…….

Republican and independent voters are rallying behind Mr. Obama as he presses for the troop escalation, while Democrats remain decidedly cool to his war plans.

I posted a while ago…in the streets and in the congress President Obama the nation’s Commander-in-Chief is going to get support from republicans, blue dog democrats and independents on his prosecution of the surge and the war…..The left is going to be left standing, in doubt, at the door…..

And so it is at this time…..

But the president must find a way to open that door for the left in three years from now when runs again….

Stanley McCrystal has just about two years, give or take a few months…the economy will be okay……..
