A counter discussion on Iran and the bomb……

This from Jerome Armstrong over at mydd.com……

‘Last weeks turmoil in Pakistan has simmered down a bit (barely), but reading an op-ed in the NYT’s this morning, boiling down the black-and-white choice for Iran to bombing or being bombed, doesn’t really bring out the holiday spirit.

Senator Kerry might be going to visit Iran, which would be the first diplomatic trip there in about 30 years. Last year, Iran backed out of meeting with he chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Rep. Howard Berman, so its unclear, even if Kerry committed to the visit, whether the political situation inside Iran would allow it to fruition.

Here’s what the op-ed declares:

Since peaceful carrots and sticks cannot work, and an invasion would be foolhardy, the United States faces a stark choice: military air strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities or acquiescence to Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons.

A military strike into Iran would be the most foolish foreign policy decision since George Bush chose to invade Iraq. If you want a reason to be thankful that McCain is not President, there it is for ya. There is an educated and worldly populace inside Iran that will eventually democratize the country.

The world, including the US and Israel, is going to have to get used to the reality that Iran will have/has nuclear weapons. It’s not a great diplomatic reality to deal with, but the alternative is just a hideous path of war, and a insurmountable blow to any sort of allied relations with Iran in the near decades.

Then there’s the whole ongoing escalation between India and Pakistan with their nuclear capability/dispute/whatever over there’.

Note:…..I’m having a REAL HARD TIME with that vision Jerome…and I think a whole lot of Middle Eastern countries and Israeli are having a harder time……

  1. ah.. that op-ed stirred a lot of emotions. how come they print something like that..?
but i suspect the pressure from bibi’s domestics and cabinet are pushing hard.. they are terrified and badly damaged by the 20th century. even as bibi’s getting older and maybe truly wanting for peace.

  2. you think?……

Listen if they go things could get real crazy….While everyone will be secretly happy…they are going to have to condemn any offensive action…..That’s the media angle from here and abroad…..

Internally Bibi has to deal with people who would not be happy with the move…..

then there is the technical angle…do they get every target….every nuke site?

do they get the Iranians so pissed that they do the unthinkable and go after them?

do they fool everyone and take out the head as a warning instead of a full scale strike?

    we could just go on……

    they will probably do something……

but who knows what is going to happen afterwards?

  3. good points, and no good answers.
but a line has been crossed somewhere.
at the same time – the cold war scenarios seemed a lot worse.
but full-scale attack doesn’t quite rhyme with the no-drama foreign policy. rather take out the head. come to think of it, as gates & others keep saying – military action only buys a little time. but could israel decide for themselves?

somewhere in the background the anthropogical question looms, if tools and technology will become the dead end for the human species.

  5. hehe.. things suddendly turned a bit gloomy on christmas day here, huh? to try framing it in a bigger picture; in some ways it’s a local issue in a small part of the world, and that type of regime never survives over time. little comfort, but still..

and i do believe it will ease over without a huge-scale catastrophe.. the younger iranians want something different. let’s hope.
