The U.S. Army is working to improve and innovate Body Armor…..

The Army’s product manager for Soldier Protective Equipment is Lt. Col. Jon Rickey….

Weight has long been an issue with the body armor the Pentagon issues to troops. Rickey’s office has signed an $18.6-million contract with KDH Defense Systems to send 57,000 new, lighter plate carriers to Afghanistan to decrease the load soldiers carry. He told DTI in November that the plate carriers were undergoing first-article testing at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., to be followed soon by lot-acceptance tests. Deliveries are expected to begin in late December and be complete by March.

Given the increasing attention that has been given to the issue of traumatic brain injuries as a result of roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan, helmets are a big part of what the Army is working on. Rickey’s office is developing a helmet sensor that measures blast overpressure and head acceleration during explosions or other traumatic events. The Army has culled data from the first generation of helmet sensors—7,000 of which were deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom from March 2008 to March 2009—which is being used to create a combat helmet that is lighter and equipped with sensors more capable of downloading real-time data.

Lets hope these people can improve what our soldiers get to wear in combat…….

And make them safer….so more can come home whole…….

Bill Thompson will run for New York City Mayor in 2013…..

Thompson (the ex-NYC Controller), who just bearly lost to Mike Bloomberg has decided to not primary Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who is running for her spot for the first time this year…This will leave the field open for Harold Ford Jr. to run against her in the democratic primary and leave Thompson time to get a leg up on anyone running for New York City Mayor four years from now…….

When asked about Cuomo running for the  New York State Governor spot, which Governor Paterson was not elected to he answered…..“People could have used that same line and said, when I was running, ‘Don’t you think it’s wrong to run against Mike Bloomberg?’ I don’t think there are any goods or bads. Everybody has to be held to their own decision.”

He did say that the current junior senator from New York still needs to introduce herself to voters…..

Another Democtaric Senator will retire!…..Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND)….

This is the second Democratic Senator to retire in 24 hours…..not a good day for the Democratic Party and it’s majority in the Senate….This from Merlin…..

Here’s the story from Politico’s Scorecard by Josh Kraushaar……..

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) announced this evening that he’s retiring at the end of his term, a shocking development that threatens Democratic control of his Senate seat next year.

Dorgan was up for re-election in 2010, but the third-term senator wasn’t facing any strong Republican opposition– but was facing the growing possibility of a serious challenge from popular Gov. John Hoeven (R-N.D.).

In his statement, Dorgan said his retirement was borne out of the desire to spend more time with his family.

“Over this holiday season, I have come to the conclusion, with the support of my family, that I will not be seeking another term in the U.S. Senate in 2010. It is a hard decision to make after thirty years in the Congress, but I believe it is the right time for me to pursue these other interests,” Dorgan said in a statement.

“Let me be clear that this decision does not relate to any dissatisfaction that I have about serving in the Senate. Yes, I wish there was less rancor and more bipartisanship in the U.S. Senate these days. But still, it is a great privilege to serve and I have the utmost respect for all of the men and women with whom I serve.”

Here’s how he annouced his decission…..

Democratic Senate campaign officials only found out about Dorgan’s decision within the last 24 hours. Dorgan began calling Senate leaders on Tuesday afternoon to inform them of his decision to retire, according to Senate insiders.

He had previously given no sign that he wasn’t going to run for re-election or was even considering retirement and had been raising money for his 2010 campaign.

“It caught us totally by surprise,” said an aide to one top Senate Democrat. “We had no idea this was coming. Total stunner.”

this the story with the possible replacement for his seat…….

A December Rasmussen poll showed Hoeven leading Dorgan by an astounding 22 points, 58 percent to 36 percent.  Both candidates, according to the poll, held very strong approval ratings within the state.

Hoeven, a third-term governor, has rock-star appeal in North Dakota, with a majority of voters (53 percent) viewing him “very favorably” in the Rasmussen survey.

On the Democratic side, all eyes will be on Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-N.D.), who represents the entire state in the House and has won his share of tough campaigns.  But if Pomeroy ran for the Senate, his vacancy would mean House Republicans would have an excellent opportunity to pick up his seat..

Colorado Gov Ritter to retire!……

The Democrats are not having a good day to day……not with this news…..

CO-GOV: Bill Ritter to retire

Via The Fix:

Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter (D) will not seek a second term this fall, according to Democratic sources briefed on his decision.

Ritter, elected in a landslide in 2006, had seen his political fate dip considerably in the intervening years, and faced an extremely difficult re-election race against former Rep. Scott McInnis (R) in November.

“Bill Ritter was literally the weakest incumbent in nearly 50 years and his own party was unenthusiastic at best for his reelection,” said Colorado Republican party chairman Dick Wadhams. “Colorado has certainly changed from that heady day at Invesco Field.”

Democrats are likely to turn to either former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff or Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper to replace Ritter. Romanoff is currently challenging appointed Sen. Michael Bennet in a Democratic primary and if he could be convinced to switch races would solve two problems for the party.

Colorado is now the eleventh open seat Democrats must defend this year although the other ten seats are being vacated as a result of term limits. Republicans also have eleven open seats of their own to defend. There are 37 governors races on the ballot this fall.

Ritter was a weak choice, so his retirement actually improves Democrats chances of holding this seat because Democrats have a huge bench here to go up against former GOP Congressman Scott McInnis, the presumptive GOP nominee. Still, the GOP is favored.

Harlem the New York City black icon is no longer majority black……

The reason comes down to this…..

“Gentrification — the buying up and rehabilitation of land and buildings, whether by families or developers, occupied or abandoned —means a rising rent tide for all, leading inevitably to displacement next door, down the block, or two streets away,” said Neil Smith, director of the Center for Place, Culture and Politics at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

and this……..

“There are people who would like to maintain Harlem as a ‘black enclave,’ but the only way to do that is to own it,” Mr. Dodson said. “That having been said, you can’t have it both ways: You can’t on the one hand say you oppose being discriminated against by others who prevent you from living where you want to and say out of the other side of your mouth that nobody but black people can live in Harlem.”

and this…..everything old..is new again….
