commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

The Republicans do not have their stuff together going into the primary to pick someone to run against Barabar Boxer in California..

The race to get a Republican to run against Barbara Boxer in California’s House District (Ca 6th) is turning into a three-ring circus……it now involves multimillionaire Carly Fiorina…who has lent herself $2.5 million, because she can’t raise too enough money……Orange County Assemblyman Chuck DeVore……a tried and true GOP conservative……and finally a maybe third-party to the date…..U.S. Rep. Tom Cambell who is running for Governor…but appears to be getting ready to switch to running against the other two GOPer’s……

We’ll see how it comes out…..but if the race turns into a three way….Fiorina may be able to walk out the victor…..while the guys split the vote…..

Harold Ford Jr. talk's in depth to the New York Times……

He get’s ‘on the record’ about same- sex marriage (he’s now backing away from his oppositional stance)…. being pro-life (he is reconsidering his stance here, also)……and wanting local police officer’s to enforce immigration laws (he’s gonna have to dis own this one…this is New York )….

He also goes on to say…..’he had missed politics since leaving Congress four years ago and believes New Yorker’s would be open to his candidacy, despite his Tennessee roots and intermittent Southern accent.

In a clear swipe at Ms. Gillibrand, he said he would not be a lap dog for Democratic leaders in Washington, who have rushed to her defense since Mr. Ford expressed interest in the seat.’

The best part of the pice for me was this passage…..

Mr. Ford said he had been emboldened by the response he had received from the public in recent days. Everyone — from the cabdrivers who shuttle him around the city to the executives with whom he rubs elbows on Wall Street — has urged him to run, he said.

During a trip from New York to Palm Beach on Thursday, flight attendants and passengers stopped in the aisle to cheer him on, he said. “I didn’t hear anyone say, you better not run against that Kirsten Gillibrand,” he said.

The Dog agree’s……Run……. Mr. Harold Ford JR. ……run……..as hard as you can…..

Haiti has a 7.0 Earthquake…..

(CNN) — A major earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and power lines and inflicting what its ambassador to the United States called a catastrophe for the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation.

Several eyewitnesses reported heavy damage and bodies in the streets of the capital, Port-au-Prince, where concrete-block homes line steep hillsides. There was no estimate of the dead and wounded Tuesday evening, but the U.S. State Department has been told to expect “serious loss of life,” department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters in Washington.

The link for the story is here……..

Update:……The State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development and U.S. Southern Command have started to coordinate. USAID said it was sending a disaster assistance response team and had activated its partners, the Fairfax County (Va.) Urban Search and Rescue Team and the Los Angeles County Search and Rescue Team. USAID disaster experts also would assist.

Martha Coakley starts her air ads…….

……..here’s the ads link..……

Here’s Scott Brown’s rebuttal ad……

Note:…..This updates the original links…The Mydd>com piece is repalced with the link…..

This is the piece from Mydd.com’s Johnathan Singer……

It looks like Coakley has realized that she isn’t going to be able to win this race without effort. Democrats in Washington have gotten the message, too, dispatching DNC national press secretary Hari Sevugan, a veteran of the 2008 campaign, to help Coakley make it to the finish line.

At present, the Pollster.com trend estimate on the race gives Coakley about a 10-point lead — though there is a lot of variance in the numbers from the different surveys looking at the race. If you want to help out the Coakley campaign, too, click here to contribute.

The Democrats win a GOP State Senate seat by a Wide margin, in Virginia……

For you GOPer’s out there…….The Democrats won another State Senate seat……..This one in Virginia…..by a huge margin…..could this be the start of something?

Here’s the scoop from Jonathan Singer @ Mydd.Com…..

In 2009, Republican Bob McDonnell carried Virginia’s 37th Senate district by a 56.8 percent to 43.0 percent margin during his successful gubernatorial bid. Republican Ken Cuccinelli, who at the time represented the district, also carried the district with 53.8 percent of the vote. But when Virginians went to the polls today to elect a replacement for Cuccinelli in a race expected to go to the Republicans, something strange happened.

Defying recent voting trends that saw several Northern Virginia Republicans win big in November, Del. David W. Marsden (D-Fairfax) won a special election Tuesday night to represent a broad swath of southwestern Fairfax County in the Virginia Senate.Marsden, a two-term delegate from Burke who switched political parties earlier this decade while serving as the head of the state Department of Juvenile Justice under both Republican and Democratic governors, won the 37th state Senate seat vacated by Attorney General-elect Kenneth T. Cuccinelli (R) by rallying a voter base reeling from big losses in November’s statewide and House races.

The vote solidifies the Democrats’ majority in the Virginia State Senate, 22-18, helping ensure the party has a say when the time comes to redistrict the state following the 2010 census. But even more immediately, the election indicates that despite all the prognosticating from the Beltway press, the political environment may not be nearly as toxic for the Democrats as some would have you believe.

Note:…..You missed this one Merlin…….and the win was with 53.8% of the vote!

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand tells the truth…..Her job was given to her…She wasn't elected to it…..

The Dog has said this over and over……

“If you haven’t run an election — I was appointed, I wasn’t elected — you didn’t have the benefit of a statewide media campaign. It just takes time.”

— Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), quoted by the New York Daily News, explaining why 40% of voters still do not have an opinion about her.
