More on the 'Special Interrogation Teams'……

The Dog has followed this story for a while……

Here…. Here……...and Here…….

It seems that after the NW 235 caper..the government decided to actually set the unit up…..it still isn’t fully operational……

The High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group, announced to fanfare by White House officials last summer, was not formally authorized until Jan. 28, under a previously unreported 14-page memo signed by the president’s national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones. The delay became a matter of political debate last month after members of Congress asked why the group had been not deployed to interrogate Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who is accused of trying to detonate an explosive Dec. 25 on an airliner about to land in Detroit.

But the Dogs still see’s this whole thing as a political exercise (the finding wasn’t signed until January 28th? ) to placate those who think that bad guys need to be protected from the local FBI and CIA people and counterintelligence people at those agencies….Who have so far handled the NW suspect case pretty darn good…..

Duplication of services come to mind……

Wasting the taxpayer’s money does also……

Bureaucratic political infighting seems to be also on the list…….

Note:…..Even the name of the Group sounds lousy……One can only hope this whole thing quietly goes away…..I can see the cluster f*#k at an airport if a similar action occurs…..What are the local FBI agents and Cops supposed to do?….Sit there with their mouths taped shut  for hours until the HVDIG people show up?……

Note#2.….The Republican’s are on crack…no Federal Judge  and Defense attorney is gonna let any testimony from a suspect gained BEFORE being Mirandized be used in a trial…Nope… ain’t gonna happen……That’s why Abdulmutallad is singing…he knows he’s getting a deal…..intelligence will always trump a criminal charge….

SE on Harold Ford Jr……

This from SE…….

U.S. Senate wannabe’s tour rider anticipates swarms of adoring fans

FEBRUARY 5–Like Jay-Z and Lady Gaga, Harold Ford, Jr. has a tour rider. The former Tennessee congressman, who is now trying to carpetbag his way to a Senate seat in New York, banks about $20,000 when he gives speeches booked by the Greater Talent Network agency. According to the below contract for an appearance Wednesday at a Missouri college, Ford demands that when his limo driver picks him up, the chauffeur must be carrying a sign reading “H.F..” Presumably, if the Democrat’s name was spelled out, hordes of fans/groupies would be alerted to his impending arrival and swarm him (something that has bedeviled the Jonas Brothers). On the security front, if he is appearing before a packed house, Ford, 39, needs an “alternate entrance & exit at the venue,” to, again, apparently avoid the crush of devotees. While the hospitality section of Ford’s rider does not address his backstage preference when it comes to M&Ms, it does note that an allergy keeps shellfish off Ford’s menu.

Counterpoint…..The Dog isn’t too hot about these kinda stories about Ford….Nobody does stories about Kirsten, or Chuck’s personal things……There is this left and right thing going on about none of the substantiate things about Harold Ford Jr….. Because he wants to primary Chuck Schumer’s pick for Junior Senator…..None of these same people want to talk about the fact that Kirsten Gillibrand was just as far to the right on the Democratic mainstream as Ford when she got anointed…all of the sudden…. she’s alright ……but Ford is a ‘rich and eccentric brother’ that is a carpet bagger?…what is this BULLSHIT?……Hillary, Robert Kennedy , and whole lot of other people have come to New York to work…why is it different for Ford?……Why?

Let him primary her….let her earn the vote from the current 40% of the voters who are undecided in the polling……

The Marine 'DI'….. Actor R. Lee Ermey wants the Navy to change it's name…..

The Marines want some respect……..

The actor who played the drill sergeant in “Full Metal Jacket” is coming to Washington, D.C., next week to lobby Congress to pass a long-stalled bill.

R. Lee Ermey is the national spokesman for a growing grassroots effort behind legislation sponsored by Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) that would rename the Department of the Navy as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.

Ermey, who was in the Marine Corps for 11 years, has been in over 100 movies, including “Apocalypse Now,” “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas,” according to imdb.com.

Over the past decade, Jones has repeatedly pushed his colleagues to pass his bill. Jones’s bill has 367 co-sponsors. Roberts (R-Kan.), a Marine Corps veteran, introduced companion legislation last year.

The Marine Corps League, which is orchestrating the grassroots effort with Ermey, has started a petition-writing campaign and is bringing supporters of Jones’s legislation to Capitol Hill on Thursday.

“Marines have fought and died with their Navy brothers and sisters for more than 200 years,” said Michael Blum, Marine Corps League executive director in a statement. “It’s finally time to give the Marine Corps the recognition the branch has long deserved.”

Although the Marine Corps has been a separate service since the National Security Act of 1947, it does not get equal billing with the Navy, Air Force and Army, each of which has a Pentagon department named after it. Since the Marine Corps’s earliest days, it has operated under the Department of the Navy.

The origins of the Marines date back to Nov. 10, 1775 when the Continental Congress called for the creation of two battalions to serve as landing forces with the fleet during the Revolutionary War. It was not until July 11, 1798 that Congress officially passed an act to establish the Marine Corps. On June 30, 1834, Congress passed another act placing the Marines under the umbrella of the Navy.

The Corps functions in war and peacetime as a separate branch in nearly every way. It has its own military command structure.

The running joke has been that the Marines constitute the “men’s department” of the Navy. Yet the issue of receiving recognition is no laughing matter to many who serve in the Marine Corps. The families of those who die in combat and are awarded service commendations receive letters from the secretary of the Navy, with no mention of the Marine Corps on the letterhead.

Families of those dying in combat also receive the condolence letters on Navy letterhead with no explicit mention of the Marine Corps anywhere in the letter, according to a sample of a letter posted by the Marine Corps League.

Supporters of changing the name are quick to note that the effort does not signal that the Marine Corps wants to break away from the Navy, nor would the change cost more than the immediate change in stationary sent to families. The name change also would not alter the responsibilities of the Navy secretary or how resources between the Navy and Marine Corps are allocated, the supporters argue.

The bill is backed by FedEx founder Fred Smith, a former Marine and former secretary of the Navy Lawrence Garrett.

Ah, check the link for this..the comments are interesting……

Note:….If the Marines and the Navy got seperated in 1947…how come they’re still togther?

SE on the 2011 Governor races……

This from SE……
Here’s an early take on the 2011 Gubernatorial races:

Mississippi: Incumbent GOP Governor Haley Barbour is term-limited. Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant is the only announced GOP candidate. Potential candidates for the Republicans are Commercial Building Contractor Dave Dennis, former Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann Jr., State Auditor Stacey Pickering, State Treasurer Tate Reeves, State Agriculture & Commerce Commissioner Lester Spell Jr., State Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney, former Congressman Chip Pickering, Senator Roger Wicker, and Congressman Gregg Harper. Potential candidates for the Democrats are Attorney’s John Arthur Eaves and Bill Luckett, Attorney General Jim Hood, former Attorney General Mike Moore, State Representative Steve Holland, and Congressmen Travis Childers, Bennie Thompson, and Gene Taylor. Considering the quality of the candidates on both sides and the political climate in 2011, I rate this one LEANS REPUBLICAN.

Kentucky: Incumbent Democratic Governor Steve Beshear is running for re-election, and has chosen Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson as his running mate. Demolition Contractor Otis “Bullman” Hensley Jr. has announced his challenge to Beshear in the Democratic Primary. Potential candidates for the Republicans are Congressmen Ed Whitfield, S. Brett Guthrie, and Geoff Davis, Secretary of State Trey Grayson(if he fails at his Senate run), Physician Rand Paul(if he fails at his Senate run), former State Superintendent of Public Instruction John Stephenson, and State Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer. TOSSUP.

Louisiana: Incumbent GOP Governor Bobby Jindal is running for re-election. Minister Dennis “Dan” Northcutt has announced his challenge to Jindal in the Republican Primaries. Potential candidates for the Democrats are Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landireu(if he fails in his bid for New Orleans Mayor), State Senator Eric LaFleur, former Congressman Don Cazayoux, State Representatives Damon Baldone, Fred Mills, Gary Smith, Mike Powell, and Michael Jackson, Attorney General James “Buddy” Caldwell, former Attorneys General Richard Ieyoub and Charles C. Foti Jr., former State Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Bob Odom, State Natural Resources Secretary Scott Angelle, Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeffrey Wiley, Congressman Charlie Melancon(if he fails at his Senate bid), former Governor Kathleen Blanco, former PSC Commissioner Foster Campbell, and State Senator Walter Boasso. LIKELY REPUBLICAN.

Sarah Palin is up to something…….

Way back when….. McCain named Sarah Palin as his Vice President running mate….at that time…. the guys over at Politcs1 complained and berated Sarah Palin as stupid…..I told them…she isn’t stupid….she never was…..and now she’s out doing something that isn’t dumb ..at all…

This from PoliticalWire…..

The New York Times notes Sarah Palin’s “growing cast of advisers and support system could be working in the service of any number of goals: a presidential run, a de facto role as the leader of the Tea Party movement, a lucrative career as a roving media entity — or all of the above. Ms. Palin represents a new breed of unelected public figure operating in an environment in which politics, news media and celebrity are fused as never before. Whether she ever runs for anything else, Ms. Palin has already achieved a status that has become an end in itself: access to an electronic bully pulpit, a staff to guide her, an enormous income and none of the bother or accountability of having to govern or campaign for office.”

First Read: “We don’t offer an answer to this Palin question. But she’s like no other political figure in history when it comes to the fact she plays by different rules.”

This from The Hill.……

The Senate Republican primary in Kentucky has emerged as a proxy battle between two leaders of the factionalized Republican Party, Sarah Palin and Mitch McConnell.

At stake is the direction of the Republican Party, which Republican leaders in Washington fear could turn off middle-of-the road voters if it lurches too far to the right.

Since being tapped as the GOP’s vice-presidential nominee in 2008, Palin has emerged a leader of independent and social conservatives.

McConnell (Ky.), the Senate Republican leader, has cemented his leadership of the party establishment in Washington over the past year by unifying Senate Republicans against President Barack Obama’s agenda.

But McConnell and other veteran Republican lawmakers have a delicate relationship with many conservatives now lining up behind Palin and the Tea Party because of how federal spending swelled under GOP rule.

The growing activism of conservatives around the country, including many longtime members of the Republican grassroots, has helped energize the Republican Party, such as in Massachusetts. But the indifference or opposition of Tea Party activists to candidates favored by Republican leaders threatens to upset the GOP’s carefully crafted political strategy.

Sarah Palin, who gave her handlers headaches during the 2008 presidential campaign, isn’t making things any easier.

She has thrown her support behind Rand Paul, a favorite of anti-establishment conservatives such as RedState.com and Gun Owners of America, who is running for Senate in Kentucky.

The Dog submits to all you Republicans, and Democrats out there to be very afraid…..This young grandmother is on a roll…..she’s no one’s fool, and most of you out there have vastly underestimated her, and the power she has amassed ……It is the Dogs opinion …that in the end….she will leave  John McCain and other old-time GOP leaders in the dust….. as she ascends in political stature…..

You wait and see……..

I haven’t been wrong about her yet…….

More again…. on Dan Coats……..

This guy is the gift that keeps giving……He just needs to drop out already……

This from BlueIndiana, @ Mydd.Com……

If there was any doubt that Dan Coats had cut all ties with his “home” state, this damning footage from a North Carolina event in September of 2008 makes it clear that he had no use for Hoosiers until he thought he might be able to win a senate seat.

Check this from YouTube…….

Wow. For what it’s worth, even conservatives in the state have been unimpressed with the Carpetbagging Coats experience. In fact, even the crazy tea-baggers are fed up with the charade.

These insiders are making a major mistake if they feel that the grassroots patriots, who want to see Mr. Bayh head into retirement this year, will accept another DC insider, who spent years as a lobbyist, being dragged into the race. The GOP insiders are making a major mistake if they believe that a candidate who has not lived in our state for the past 10 years – is who the grassroots base will support. The perception that Mr. Coats is being chosen by DC insiders is alienating him from the very base of grassroots support that he will need to win the primary and the general election.

And this is coming from a guy who advocates armed resistance to the federal government.

Merlin…..The Republican’s need to leave Evan Bayh alone….They have no one to mount a credible race against him…..

Google asks the NSA for help on the China cyber attacks……….

This issue is not over……

Google has turned to the National Security Agency for technical assistance to learn more about the computer network attackers who breached the company’s cybersecurity defenses last year, a person with direct knowledge of the agreement said Thursday.

The collaboration between Google, the world’s largest search engine company, and the federal agency in charge of global electronic surveillance raises both civil liberties issues and new questions about how much Google knew about the electronic thefts it experienced when it stated last month that it might end its business operations in China, where it said the attacks originated. The agreement was first reported on Wednesday evening by The Washington Post.

By turning to the N.S.A., which has no statutory authority to investigate domestic criminal acts, instead of the Department of Homeland Security, which does have such authority, Google is clearly seeking to avoid having its search engine, e-mail and other Web services regulated as part of the nation’s “critical infrastructure.”

Google made the original complaint and noise because it’s management was deeply disturbed by the Chinese actions……while those actions are par for the course of doing business in that country which does not follow too many of e=anybodies else’s rules…..this new information about Google’s action is going to be headache for the White House, and the State department….for comerce and foreign relations resons……

The question will be… How strongly the Chinese are willing to tramp all over Google’s and other business to go after dissidents?….

While the piece just deals with the civil liberties side of the issue of the Cyber attacks…..The Dog warns….. There will be more to come on this issue from other quarters……..

Bill Clinton returns to Haiti and is put in Charge of the U.N. efforts there……

Former President Bill Clinton, who is the United Nations special envoy to Haiti, returned here on Friday to meet with government and aid officials, visit a health clinic and deliver medical supplies, computers and generators.

Mr. Clinton praised the progress being made in the relief effort, especially in addressing the need for food, shelter and security, but he expressed a growing sense of urgency about the country’s requirements for sanitation and health care.

Mr. Clinton was given the added responsibility on Wednesday of overseeing United Nations aid efforts and reconstruction in Haiti after the magnitude 7 earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince, the capital, and surrounding areas on Jan. 12.

Dr. Paul Farmer, the deputy special envoy to Haiti who toured the clinic with Mr. Clinton, said: “For sanitation and health, the key is going to be to create community-based solutions, which basically means hire Haitians and lots of them to begin tracking infectious diseases, doing follow-up on treatments, as well as building latrines and water infrastructure. It shouldn’t be seen as some radical notion that we need to inject the money into the Haitian population, because they are the ones who can actually do the follow up.”

United Nations officials echoed the concerns over sanitation and health.

If he is serious…he’s got a big job ahead of him……..
