commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

Obama shows his Christianity and appreciation for black communities……in talks to inter-faith clergy and to black ministers……..

The President spoke in two meetings today…in both he affirmed his Christian values for community…and praised and pushed for help for blacks…..

The meetings in the White House are to bolster Obama’s standing in the black community in the face of complaints that Obama has not ‘reached back’ for blacks…..

The President was well received and supported in both meetings…..

Looks like he isn’t a Muslim, right?

Obama has often had to balance concerns that he is not addressing his political base with suspicions from some critics, especially on the question of race, that he would advance a “black agenda.” The ministers at the White House meeting rejected that concern and renewed their support for Obama ahead of the event.

Earlier, at a prayer breakfast with 90 Christian clergy from a range of denominations — from the Vatican’s ambassador to Washington, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, to megachurch televangelist Joel Osteen — Obama again showed why he can be as effective a preacher as he is a speechmaker.

The president opened his remarks by noting the West Virginia mine disaster, and saying that he spoke with Gov. Joe Manchin of West Virginia last night to assure him that federal assistance was available if needed.

But he focused on the religious aspect of the tragedy, asking for prayers “for the safe return of the missing, the men and women who put their lives on the line to save them, and the souls of those who have been lost in this tragic accident,” as well as the families of the survivors.

Obama then noted that he had hosted a Seder dinner for Passover, and an iftar meal to break the Muslim fast during Ramadan. So he wanted to continue that by gathering with Christian leaders after Easter — and his preacherly eloquence showed that this kind of setting is clearly in his comfort zone:

“I can’t tell any of you anything about Easter that you don’t already know. I can’t shed light on centuries of scriptural interpretation or bring any new understandings to those of you who reflect on Easter’s meaning each and every year and each and every day. But what I can do is tell you what draws me to this holy day and what lesson I take from Christ’s sacrifice and what inspires me about the story of the resurrection.”

Talkandpolitics……Interesting book-talk about Wingnuts……

C-span2 just ended a great talk about “Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America” by John Avlon. Lots of thought-provoking stuff about a political system that encourages playing to hate and fear to strengthen the extremes on both sides.

A few things on the positive side was how the center always prevails in the long run, but a disturbing problem is how to adjust the whole concept of political government made for an industrial age to the new and shifting realities of the information age.

Is Karzai with us?……

The Dog has been following the stories running for the last week about Hamid Karzai the President of Afghanistan…..

They have gotten more and more bazar as the days go by…..

First he’s criticizing the US, and the West because of questions associated with the recent election and corruption in his government.

Then he threatens to ally himself with the Taliban

Then he hurriedly calls Secretary Clinton to ask for ‘clarification’ of the American position on his county….

Now we get a presser where the White House Press Secretary refuses to stay if Karzai is a ‘Ally’….

WTF????

What is going on here?

The United States and NATO are fighting on Afghan soil…and we don’t know if the President of that country is on our side???

Asked at the daily press briefing if the U.S. considers Karzai an ally, Gibbs said “Karzai is the democratically elected leader of Afghanistan.”
Pressed on the issue, Gibbs said that “the remarks he’s made I can’t imagine that anyone in this country found them anything other than troubling…when the Afghan leaders take steps to improve governance and root out corruption, then the president will say kind words.”

UConn Women overcome a 12-point first half to squeeze past Stanford for second straight title…..

Maya Moore

Maya Moore scored 23 points and helped Connecticut rally Tuesday night from a horrible first half to beat Stanford 53-47 for its second straight undefeated championship season.

Held to only five points through the first 12 minutes and trailing 20-12 at the break, coach Geno Auriemma’s Huskies bounced back and played like champs to claim their seventh national title.

UConn (39-0) won its 78th straight, extending its women’s NCAA record for consecutive victories, although this one was the closest. All of the Huskies’ previous wins in the streak were by double digits.

Daniel……Illinois Senate: Kirk leaps into the lead over Giannoulias Bank ties; President Obama only at 50 %!!!! in his Home State……

Hello Dog!

According to a new Statewide Survey in Illinois Democratic Senate Candidate, State Treasurer Alexander “Alexi” Giannoulias (D-IL) has taken a BIG HIT over his Bank ties. In the Survey done by Public Policy Polling (PPP) U. S. Rep. Mark Steven Kirk (R-IL) now leads Giannoulias by 4 Points (37-33). The last time when PPP looked at this Race in February Giannoulias led Kirk by 8 Points, 42-34.

What’s even more DANGEROUS is that President Barack Obama (D) has only a 50 % Positive Job Approval in his own Home State. To make matters worse in a follow-up Governor Poll by PPP to be released tomorrow Governor Pat Quinn (D-IL) has only a 25 % JA in the State promting PPP’s Co-Pollster Tom Jensen to say that at this time a Quinn / Giannoulias Ticket is THE WEAKEST Ticket of all the States they have polled in. Huh… that doesn’t sound really good.

Daniel…..Wisconsin Governor & Senate: Republicans clinging on all Cylinders as all lead Democrats BIG; Republican Governor Primary is a Toss-Up……

Hello Dog!

Republican Candidates running for Governor and potentially for Senate have leaped ahead according to a new Survey out of the Badger State. The new Wisconsin Public Radio / St. Norbert College Survey Center Poll shows GOP Candidates Scott Walker (R-WI) & Mark Neumann (R-WI) defeating Democrat Tom Barrett (D-WI) by a 44-28 and 43-29 margins.

Meanwhile the Republican Governor Primary is a Toss-Up as Walker has an insignificant 1-Point edge over Neumann.

In a potential Senate Match-Up former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson (R-WI) would DEFEAT Incumbent Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) by a 45-33 margin.

Analysis:

I’ve debated countless times with “The Dog” over Tommy Thompson.

I’m now saying there isn’t now a Question if he’ll run.
The Question must be asked “When he will announce?”
I’m ready to stick my neck out and say Thompson runs BUT please don’t put the blame on me should I be wrong.
I’m still a human and not a machine…he…he
Though over the course of the last months I’ve been pretty good calling Candidates who run ,or don’t run or retire. Ask “The Dog” He knows.

Daniel G.

Yea ….I do…Daniel is more often right than wrong……

I wonder what’s the story with Tommy?

Is he in too deep with his commercial interests?

We’ll see…….

Analysis:

I KNOW the Republican Primary has gotten VERY NASTY as of late.

I hope that whoever wins will be supported and that the LOSER may have enough Courage to run against Incumbent Governor Steve Beshear (D-KY) next year.
As for the Democrats I wonder if they might have run the wrong Candidates here.
U. S. Rep. Ben Chandler (D-KY) was seriously looking at the Race before Conway got it.
Judging these Numbers Chandler might be doing better here. After all his father, “Happy” Chandler (D-KY) was Governor of the Bluegrass State for 8 years…… I believe.
