commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

President Obama….Hospitals must grant same-sex visitation…..a 'Change' from the old way of doing things………..

Nobody said President Obama is stupid……

The guy went the Columbia and Harvard….

He might have been a little slow to understand that he had to lead the Healthcare charge….

But he’s learned his lesson….

This action on allowing gays to be allowed to have the same access rights at hospitals….. as straight family members…… gets him points…..political points that he will try to cash in when he runs for re-election…..

And the Dog thinks his action’s are commentary……

He is slowly compiling a list of policy changes and actions to refer back to when questioned about his campaign promises…he hasn’t gotten all of them..but he IS trying…..

President Obama mandated Thursday that hospitals extend visitation rights to the partners of gay men and lesbians and allow same-sex couples to share medical power of attorney, perhaps the most significant step so far in his efforts to expand the rights of gay Americans.

The president directed the Department of Health and Human Services to prohibit discrimination in hospital visitation in a memo that was e-mailed to reporters Thursday night while he was at a fundraiser in Miami.

Administration officials and gay activists, who have been quietly working together on the issue, said the new rule will affect any hospital that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding, a move that covers the vast majority of the nation’s health-care institutions.

It is currently common policy in many hospitals that only those related by blood or marriage be allowed to visit patients.

“Discrimination touches every facet of the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, including at times of crisis and illness, when we need our loved ones with us more than ever,” Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said in praising the decision.

Obama’s actions are the latest attempt by his administration to advance the agenda of a constituency that strongly supported his presidential campaign.

Note ….Since almost all hospital receive some form of federal funds..the order will be wide reaching……

'Oprah'…the Book……

Oprah Winfrey

I’ve always be curious about how could give advice to married couples…when she’s never been married or had a child………..

He’s a piece on the new book about the ‘Mega Star’……

In the 24 years she’s been the queen of TV talk shows, Oprah Winfrey has tackled every conceivable subject. Whether a transgender male giving birth or teachers sleeping with their students, nothing is too outrageous for “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and its 7 million daily U.S. viewers.

But there is, it seems, one taboo topic for the 56-year-old: herself.

Born Oprah Gail Lee and now known across the globe simply by her first name, she’s the missing piece in “Oprah: A Biography,” the unauthorized account of her life by Kitty Kelley, bestselling author of “Jackie Oh!,” ” Nancy Reagan: The Unauthorized Biography,” “The Royals” and numerous celebrity tell-alls.

Yet Winfrey’s refusal to be interviewed seems to have inspired, rather than deterred, Kelley. She interviewed 850 sources for “Oprah,” including major “gets,” such as Winfrey’s father, and used the thousands of interviews the rags-to-riches cultural icon has granted over the years to paint a portrait that becomes less flattering as Winfrey’s fame and influence grows.

The result is an impeccably researched and well-organized look into the unlikely life of a self-made woman who used her poor upbringing as a steppingstone to build an astounding media empire. Winfrey’s net worth is currently valued at $2.4 billion.

With Cuomo becoming New York next Governor…who will run for his Attorney General job?

The New York Post has something on a poll sent out by Liz Holzman…..a former Congresswoman and Brooklyn DA…….rating a run for New York State Attorney General…..(the last few have become Governor )

Holzman might be actually over the hill….and has had a very…very turbulent political past in New York.….but the interesting thing is that Nassau County DA  Kathleen Rice is in second place in the poll after only her second term in office……

The Knickerbocker reported at the end of March that a north Brooklyn reader got a polling call focused exclusively on former congresswoman and Brooklyn DA Elizabeth Holtzman — and now Mike Bloomberg pollster Doug Schoen is claiming ownership of it. Schoen conducted the poll, apparently at Holtzman’s request, between March 27 and April 1, with a sample size of 500, and claims his research shows that in the seven-way race of current Democratic contenders considering or declared in the race, Holtzman has a 20 point lead. Holtzman had 29 percent, and Nassau County District AttorneyKathleen Rice had 9 percent, while state Sen. Eric Schneiderman and Denise O’Donnell were tied at 4 percent each. “It is my considered opinion that if Liz Holtzman runs, she will be a very strong candidate and would begin as the odds-on frontrunner for Attorney General in New York,” Schoen said in a statement accompanying the poll, which was distributed wide to reporters. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Holtzman paid for the poll out of her own pocket.

Talkandpolitics on Katyn,Poland past and Russia's Putin……

From Talkandpolitcs.….

Putin on Katyn.

From Cohens column today:

Michnik was referring to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s words after he decided last week to join, for the first time, Polish officials commemorating the anniversary of the murder at Katyn of thousands of Polish officers by the Soviet Union at the start of World War II. Putin, while defending the Russian people, denounced the “cynical lies” that had hidden the truth of Katyn, said “there is no justification for these crimes” of a “totalitarian regime” and declared, “We should meet each other halfway, realizing that it is impossible to live only in the past.”

Taxes are the lowest in 60 Years?

Ah, ……I don’t think you’re gonna get too many of us to believe that one…….

This from PoliticalWire……

Taxes at Lowest Levels in 60 Years

Despite big tax cuts included last year’s economic stimulus package, the latest CBS News/New York Times poll finds that as many as 34% of Americans think President Obama raised their taxes.

William Gale, head of the Tax Policy Center at the Brookings Institution, tells CBS News that federal taxes are actually “at their lowest levels in 60 years.”

Said Gale: “The relation between what is said in the tax debate and what is true about tax policy is often quite tenuous. The rise of the Tea Party at at time when taxes are literally at their lowest in decades is really hard to understand.”

Did you know? …… The Supreme Court Justices have to go to Congress for money …..

This story starts off about the Supreme Court ( Justices Clarence Thomas and  Stephen Breyer ) going up to the Hill to ask the House for more money for more (12 to 24 ) police officer’s for the Supreme Court……

[ Justices Breyer and Thomas ]

Thomas said the court was making the request “with some reluctance” but that the court’s security personnel felt a strong need after conducting a review. The review came after the justices were asked specifically about security needs at last year’s funding hearing.

Most of the new officers would be used to secure areas of the court building and grounds that will be newly opened to the public following completion of its renovation.

“We understand this is a period of austerity,” Thomas said in outlining the court’s $77 million overall budget request, which included an increase of 5 percent from the previous year.

The visit gave the House memeber’s to quiz the Justice’s (ironic ..isn’t that?) on other issues besides money…..

The justices discussed a range of issues related to the federal judiciary, with the notable exception of any actual cases, which the lawmakers recognized as off limits.

At one point, Thomas became involved in a tense exchange with Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), who pressed the justice on the lack of diversity among the Supreme Court’s prestigious clerkships.

Lee, the chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, asked if the court had made any effort to attract clerks from minority groups and particularly from law schools outside of the Ivy League. Thomas responded that while he looks for clerks from a wide range of schools, the justices start from a pool of candidates that have clerked for other federal appellate courts.

Within that pool, Thomas said, “Hispanics and blacks do not show up in any great numbers.”

When Lee asked how the justices could increase the pool, Thomas demurred. “I don’t think it’s up to us to increase the pool,” he said.

The answer did not satisfy Lee, who brought up Thomas’s votes against affirmative action during his time on the bench.

And about camera’s in the court…..

Breyer was also asked by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) about the prospect of opening the high court to cameras for the first time. The justice backed a pilot program for cameras in lower federal courts, but he said it would take a while before a “comfort level” is reached to allow Supreme Court proceedings to be televised.

“How to get to that comfort level is going to be a long, complicated matter,” he said. “Eventually we’ll get to the comfort level, but we’re not there yet.”

He warned that once cameras are allowed in, “there’s no going back.”

Schiff replied that the only way the justices would reach that point of comfort would be “by taking the plunge.”

The discussion of cameras in the courtroom also provided for one of the hearing’s lighter moments.

Subcommittee Chairman José Serrano (D-N.Y.) noted that one argument against allowing cameras would be that the justices’ remarks could be taken out of context in the overheated atmosphere of cable news.

“Did you hear Breyer? What a jerk! Did you hear what question he asked? Did you hear Thomas? Oh my god!” Serrano said, doing his best imitation of an MSNBC or Fox News talk show.

At that point, Thomas, who has a well-known reputation for never asking questions during Supreme Court oral arguments, replied, “No, you mean you didn’t hear me.” The room erupted in laughter.

Daniel……DailyKos…..Lincoln still up over Halter in the Arkansas Senate Democratic Primary………..

New DKOS/R2000 Poll has Lincoln up 45-33 over Halter.

http://www.dailykos.com/statepoll/2010/4/14/AR/473

From the DailyKos piece…..

Research 2000 for Daily Kos. 4/12-14. Likely voters. MoE 4% (3/22-24 results)

Democratic primary MoE 5%

Blanche Lincoln (D) 45 (44)

Bill Halter (D) 33 (31)
Other 6 (0)
Undecided 16 (25)

Favorable/Unfavorable/No opinion among Democrats

Lincoln 65/31/4 (62/34/6)
Halter 69/11/23 (68/10/27)

That +1 gain for Halter in the horserace is well within the poll’s margin of error, and presents nothing more than float. The favorabilities are actually quite the story — the Lincoln campaign has been relentlessly negative on Halter, yet none of that mud (all of it ridiculous and false) has tainted Halter. He’s shrugged off all attacks with nary a problem.

On the other side, Lincoln has faced a barrage of negative ads from Halter allies in labor, yet those have done little to damage Lincoln. In fact, she’s up a net +6 in her favorabilities. Apparently, Arkansas Democrats aren’t paying too much attention to the negativity.

On the other hand, we’ve seen “other” shoot up from nothing two weeks ago, to six percent this week. That “other” is D.C. Morrison, who scored 10 percent in a poll for Arkansas business publication Talk Business. Morrison is a no-name conservadem spending no money in the race. But in a race turning nasty, he’s starting to pick up support by virtue of not being the other two candidates.

Listen Folks…..This seat is probably lost to the Democrats……..

I just don’t see Halter getting a win here…..He’s probably going to inch up on Lincoln…..and the primary could actually be close…..but I see this seat just about gone with either of the two….
