The fine print from last weeks Nuclear Security Summit in Washington D.C.

I’ll bet you didn’t know that it wasn’t the United States and Russia pledging cutbacks in nuclear war heads and materials…..

Here’s more on the other countries and their actions……

Some of which we done for the good…and some in order to get in good with President Obama who seems to still ‘Wow’ on the international stage….

What a difference from the Bush days!…..

These announcements, which were largely planned in advance but are being rolled out throughout the event are what American officials have taken to calling “house gifts” because they are seen as offerings by visiting dignitaries who want to get in good with their host.

“Maybe if you didn’t bring anything this time, Obama won’t invite you to the next one,” one U.S. delegate joked.

And there are quite a few. We already knew about the Chilean and Ukrainian announcements that they would give up their last stores of highly enriched uranium. Ukraine also agreed to switch its reactor to use low-enriched uranium instead.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov signed adeal to destroy large amounts of weapons grade plutonium today. Now, the Russians haveannounced they will shut down the plutonium plant in Zheleznogorsk, a once-secret city in Siberia. (They actually agreed to do that two years ago, but nice to know they will actually follow through.)

And Canada announced today that the country will give up a lot of its nuclear material, while Mexico announced today that it will convert it research reactors from highly enriched uranium to low-enriched uranium.

Gates…with Joint Chiefs Mullen's help….. seeks to 'cover his behind'…..

Secretary of Defense Gates got leaked on yesterday…..

A memo he wrote in January on dealing with Iran came out…

The memo acknowledged that the United States did not have a strategy to deal with the fact that Iran was going to have bomb with in the new two years…..

Gates is a smart guy..this is the second administration he’s working for in a row…..(the Dog doesn’t always agree with his decisions)…but I would tend to agree with his memo….

That is that……… United States simply can’t stop Iran from making a nuke unless they take military action…..

That same military action will only delay..not stop Iran from reaching their goal….

Nothing Joint Chief of Staff Mullen says changes things…..

Robert Gates and Mike Mullen Photo

[ Gates and Mullen ]

Gates did not say that the US lacked plans as Mullen says now..he said they lacked plans to stop Iran……

This scared Allies thing isn’t gonna stop with some presser…..

They ( and the entire Middle East,  Israel included) are in deep shit…..

And Gates finally acknowledged it……

The thing is..the memo was done in January…and the clock is still ticking……

Senior administration officials, asked Sunday to give specific examples of what was mischaracterized in the article, declined to discuss the content of the memo, citing its classified status. In his statement, Mr. Gates offered no details on the issues he raised in his memo.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, weighed in on the debate Sunday by saying that while extensive effort had been spent on developing Iran strategy, it remained a complicated and vexing national security challenge.

“It has been worked and it continues to be worked,” Admiral Mullen said during a forum atColumbia University in New York. “If there was an easy answer, we would’ve picked it off the shelf.”

Admiral Mullen reiterated his longstanding view that while military strikes could delay Iran’s nuclear program, diplomatic inducements and economic penalties remained the preferred course. He said that military action was the “last option.”

Sen. Schumer gets the US Airlines to promise no carry on fee's like Spirit Airlines is…………

Schumer will surely get points on his deal with the carriers American, Delta, Jet Blue, United, and US Air ….

The carriers will get kudos’ from the traveling public who seem to be not happy with the airlines that are charging for carry-on’s…….

Friday morning I watched CNN’s TJ Holmes fence with a guy from Spirit Airlines, who defended the bag charging program…..

When they finished …Holmes wasn’t too happy with anything the guy said……

Schumer is also looking for the transportation Department to outlaw the fee……

Schumer has vowed to fight a decision by Spirit Airlines to charge customers as much as $45 to carry on a bag that needs to be stowed in the overhead compartment. He says he plans to meet with Spirit officials in the coming week.

The New York Democrat has introduced legislation and has urged the Treasury Department to issue a rule to prohibit carry-on fees.

Spirit CEO Ben Baldanza has said the move would shorten security lines and make planes safer.

Airlines began adding fees in summer 2008 to compensate for soaring oil prices.

This has been Bill Clinton Week…….

The former president HAS been busy this week….

First and formost his vsit from ‘This Week’…….on ABC……..

Where he was interviewed by Jake Tapper…….

Photo: Former President Bill Clinton

TAPPER: You’ve made some news over this weekend. You gave a speech on Friday talking about — on the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing which is coming up. How public officials have a responsibility to be careful with their words. This prompted a response from — from Rush Limbaugh

Rush Limbaugh: “With this comment you have just set the stage for violence in this country. Any future acts of violence are on your shoulders, Mr. Clinton.”

TAPPER: Do you have any response?

CLINTON: Doesn’t make any sense. The only point I tried to make is that when I went back and started preparing for the 15th anniversary of Oklahoma City, I realized that there were a lot of parallels between the early ’90s and now, both in the feeling of economic dislocation, and the level of uncertainty people felt. The rise of kind of identity politics. The rise of the militia movements and the right wing talk radio with a lot of what’s going on in the blogosphere now.

And in the right wing media, and with Oath Keepers, the 3 percenters, the — all these people, you know, who are saying things like, “If Idaho wants to succeed from the union,” the militia group out there says, you know, “We’ll back them.” One leader of one of these groups said that all politics was just a prelude to civil war. And then the politicians of course have not been that serious, but a lot of the things that have been said, they — they create a climate in which people who are vulnerable to violence because they are disoriented like Timothy McVeigh was are more likely to act.

And the only point I tried to make was that we ought to have a lot of political dissent — a lot of political argument. Nobody is right all the time. But we also have to take responsibility for the possible consequences of what we say. And we shouldn’t demonize the government or its public employees or its elected officials. We can disagree with them. We can harshly criticize them. But when we turn them into an object of demonization, you know, you — you increase the number of threats.

But I worry about these threats against the president and the Congress. And I worry about more careless language even against — some of which we’ve seen against the Republican governor in New Jersey, Governor Christie.

I just think we all have to be careful. We ought to remember after Oklahoma City. We learned something about the difference in disagreement and demonization.

Israeli President gives Iran a warning…….

Shimon Peres conveyed it at the Jewish state annual memorial day ceremonies……

‘Iran is a danger to the whole civilized world, not just Israel’, President Shimon Peres warned Sunday, setting an especially somber tone for his nation’s annual memorial day for soldiers and civilians killed in wars and terror attacks.

Alluding to Iran’s nuclear program, Peres said the country threatens to annihilate Israel. ”On no account must we underestimate these threats,” he said. ”Nor should our enemies underestimate our capabilities.”

Israel has been urging the world community to impose stiff sanctions on Iran to force it to abandon its nuclear program, but Israel has not taken the option of a military strike against Iran off the table.

Israel, the U.S. and others believe Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful.

Speaking at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem before relatives of fallen soldiers, Peres added, ”A threat to the peace of the Jewish people always carries the danger of turning into a threat to the civilized world as a whole.”
