Gates admits the Obvious…..The US can’t stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb…unless?

The Dog has been arguing this point for the last year….

If so much that I stop talking about the subject because President Obama seems to be in fairyland…..

No diplomatic policy is going to stop the Iranian from their goal of having a nuclear bomb and trying to further destabilize the Middle East…..

This certainly is no secret….

Even a lowly Dog can figure this  out……..

This is one problem Obama is NOT going to be able to bullshit……that’s not gonna work…

The question is…What next?

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has warned in a secret three-page memorandum to top White House officials that the United States does not have an effective long-range policy for dealing withIran’s steady progress toward nuclear capability, according to government officials familiar with the document.

Several officials said the highly classified analysis, written in January to President Obama’s national security adviser, Gen.James L. Jones, came in the midst of an intensifying effort inside the Pentagon, the White House and the intelligence agencies to develop new options for Mr. Obama. They include a set of military alternatives, still under development, to be considered should diplomacy and sanctions fail to force Iran to change course.

Officials familiar with the memo’s contents would describe only portions dealing with strategy and policy, and not sections that apparently dealt with secret operations against Iran, or how to deal with Persian Gulf allies.

One senior official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the memo, described the document as “a wake-up call.” But White House officials dispute that view, insisting that for 15 months they had been conducting detailed planning for many possible outcomes regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

In an interview on Friday, General Jones declined to speak about the memorandum. But he said: “On Iran, we are doing what we said we were going to do. The fact that we don’t announce publicly our entire strategy for the world to see doesn’t mean we don’t have a strategy that anticipates the full range of contingencies — we do.”

But in his memo, Mr. Gates wrote of a variety of concerns, including the absence of an effective strategy should Iran choose the course that many government and outside analysts consider likely: Iran could assemble all the major parts it needs for a nuclear weapon — fuel, designs and detonators — but stop just short of assembling a fully operational weapon.

Note….This story is quite frankly scary…….What have the people in our governement been thinking?

Why is this a wake call?…..Anyone with a half a brain could see this coming……..

  1. ..but as you’ve also pointed out lots of times, pride is perhaps to biggest motivation for the Persian Bomb. The prospect of a latino bomb in some ways scares me more… or a Congo Bomb – they had a death count of 5 million in the conflict between 1998-2003.

And Gates is quite sensible on this issue, he keeps repeating that airstrikes buys you maybe two years of setback, and then what..

    • he,he, i’m following the dog daily u know!

as for the reply: yep, i’m all with you. but i can’t see it happening though, and my guess is they’ll get the bomb within a few years time. or the “virtual bomb”, which could then be turned into a real bomb within 2-3 months.

it will sure give them bigger leverage in the region, but use it on israel? naw.. it should be plenty of loose nukes around already if hamas/hezbollah/iran really wanted to nuke tel aviv. but it’s a game changer, and the arabs will be unhappy..

  3. Iran doesn’t want to use anything…the notion that they have one…ready for anything……. would be enough for the entire region to be scared……thus enhancing Iran’s political and military power….

That would be the aim of the game…..I would think….
