Daniel……Utah Senate: Utah Day long Republican State Convention starts today at Noon ET and Daniel G. will cover it LIVE from the beginning!!!….

Hello Folks and a Wonderful Good Morning to you all!

Decision Day has finally arrived for embattled Utah Incumbent Senator Robert “Bob” Bennett (R-UT). The Utah Republican State Convention starts today at Noon ET AND I will be covering it LIVE.

If Bennett loses today he would be the first Senate Incumbent since Joe Lieberman lost his Democratic Primary in Connecticut back in 2006.

8 Candidates vying to become the Republican Nominee for November in the Senate Race and 4-5 of them are considered as MAJOR CANDIDATES.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) will introduce Bennett to the Convention Delegates at 12.45pm ET.

Here are the Candidates:

Incumbent Senator Robert “Bob” Bennett (R)

Attorney Mike Lee (R)

Website: http://www.mikelee2010.com/

Business Consultant Tim Bridgewater (R)

Businesswoman Cherilyn Eagar (R)

Website: http://www.eagarforsenate.com/

Former Congressman Merril Cook (R)

Also running:

David Chiu (R)
Leonard Fabiano (R)
Jeremy Friedbaum (R)

Convention Schedule:

In all likelyhood we’ll see 3 Votes today. Once the Convention are ordered all 8 Candidates are permitted to speak to up to 7 Minutes.

Around 1.30pm ET: First Vote will take place. The Field will be narrowed to 3 Candidates. Note: However if one Candidates reaches 60 % of the Delegates he will be the Nominee.

Around 3.30pm ET: Second Vote will take place. The Field will be again narrowed to 2 Candidates and again if one Candidate reaches 60 % of the Delagates he’s the Nominee. It will also get very interesting here. Assuming Bennett is under the first 3 Candidates after the first Ballot here is THE FIRST CHANCE to dump him.

Around 5.30pm ET: Third Vote will take place. One of the two remaining Candidates has to reach 60 % of the Delegates to be the Republican Nominee for U. S. Senate to avoid a Primary.

Bennett’s Monumental Task:

Not only does he need to come through all 3 Votes. He also has to hold Attorney Mike Lee (who is considered as the Frontrunner) under 60 % of the Vote in the Third Ballot AND AT THIS POINT I seriously doubt he can do that. For example if Bridgewater loses the Second Ballot his Delagates could be voting for Lee to get rid of Bennett.

Stay tuned with the Dog All Day!

I watched the Speeches AND I’m saying Bennett is TOAST. He may get to the second Round because Conventional Wisdom tells Lee, Bridgewater and Bennett going through

      BUT, BUT, BUT

Cherilyn Eagar gave a rousy speech so who knows what’s going to happen.

      I WANT BENNETT OUT.

      • AND honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Eagar snatches away thrid place from Bennett.

    • Folks, there is a slight outside Chance Lee could wrap this up in the second Reound of Voting.

He needs 1,152 Votes to do it. That’s only 170 Votes. That’s doable.

  20. Insider UT GOP Scoop:

Bennett will be ousted after 2nd Vote. Then on 3rd Vote Bridgewater gets 55 %, Lee gets 45 % = Primary on June 22nd.

  32. Although it’s been in GOP hands for the last sixteen years (since 1 Jan 2005) and for 22 out of the last 26 (interrupted only by Bruce Sundlun in 1991-94), the Rhode Island State House is very unlikely to stay Republican in 2011.

The real race will be between independent Lincoln Chafee (former Republican U.S. Senator, 1999-2007, and Mayor of Warwick, RI) and whoever wins the Democratic nomination (currently being contested by the uninspiring Atty-Gen. Patrick Lynch and Gen. Treas. Frank Caprio).

There is also a challenger from the new Moderate Party of Rhode Island, Kenneth Block, but having heard all six current candidates last Tuesday, I give him a smaller chance than whoever wins the Republican nomination (John Robitaille or Victor Moffitt).

It is too early to tell who’ll win the election, but in the current field, I give present odds to Chafee. Some right-wingers will never forgive him for voting against the Bush-De Lay axis or for leaving the GOP (see how high Steve Laffery scored in the 2006 GOP Senate primary), but they’re vastly outnumbered by his admirers among mainstream Republicans, independents, Democrats, moderates and liberals.

Comment by Democratic Socialist Dave | May 8, 2010 | Reply

    • I hope you’re right DSD….Chaffee seems like a good guy that got screwed for being a moderate GOPer…..

      Comment by jamesb101 | May 8, 2010 | Reply

    • Minor corrections:

RI has had a GOP Guv since 1 Jan. 1995, not 2005. (That will be sixteen years on New Year’s Eve 2010, but it’s only fifteen and a third right now. Similarly for “22 out of the last 26 years”.)

      Steve Laffey, not Laffery.

      Tom DeLay not De Lay.

Unlike Haloscan, Blogger doesn’t seem to have a preview-before-posting option.
