Davis ……Who is Black…. is running to be the Democratic Governor of Alabama….

Barack Obama is the First Black President…..

Do you think means anything in Alabama?

Rep. Artur Davis, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination for governor of Alabama and the first major African-American contender for the job ever, is taking a cue from President Barack Obama’s strategy on race during his 2008 campaign: Don’t bring it up.

Since announcing his bid in February 2009, Mr. Davis has taken unprecedented steps to distance himself from the state’s black political establishment while trying to build more credibility with white independents and conservatives.

The 42-year-old four-term congressman from Birmingham voted against the president’s new health-care law—the only black Democrat in Congress to do so—and was called by some black leaders as a racial turncoat. He has gone out of his way to publicly snub three powerful black political organizations by refusing to sit for their endorsement screenings, drawing criticism that he is an opportunist in search of white votes. “The day has ended when these groups decide who wins the support of black voters in this state,” Mr. Davis said April 21.

In response, the Alabama New South Coalition, at its screening earlier this month, endorsed Mr. Davis’s white opponent, state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks. The other two groups are expected to do the same.

The dispute illustrates the complexities that beset African-Americans seeking statewide office in the South, where, except for Virginia, no state has elected a black governor or senator since Reconstruction. Racial sensitivities lying beneath the surface of Southern politics can boil over even absent a black candidate. In the Alabama Republican gubernatorial contest, Tim James, who is white and the son of former Gov. Fob James, has ignited controversy recently with a commercial that condemns the administering of the state driver’s license test in foreign languages.

“This is Alabama,” Mr. James says in the ad. “We speak English. If you want to live here, learn it. We’re only giving that test in English if I’m governor.”

For the June 1 Democratic primary, a voter survey conducted at the end of March by Public Policy Polling, of Raleigh, N.C., showed Mr. Davis, a Harvard-educated former assistant U.S. attorney in Montgomery, leading Mr. Sparks 38% to 28%.
