Actually the family values had an earlier start with Richard Nixon in RESPONSE to McGovernon’s view on social matters

and LARGELY with Ronald Reagan through the HELP of Jerry Falwell

Jerry Falwell sat down with Reagan Staff and created what was then known as the FOUR PILLARS of being a Republican

    1) strong Judeo-_Christian values

    2) A belief in the protection of Israel

    3) strong national defense

    4) Fiscal conservatism and supporting LOW taxes

Jerry Falwell was then SENT OUT to recruit AS MANY as possible to the GOP

    and he WAS very successful

Some of the nation’s largest banks have agreed to contribute enough money to save Chicago-based ShoreBank, the community lender with strong ties to the Obama administration, FOX Business has learned.

The banks have agreed to contribute $140 million to bail out the bank, while the federal government will donate tens of millions more, according to people close to the talks. In addition to major Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs (GS: 139.13, 1.72, 1.25%), which agreed to contribute $20 million to the bailout effort, as well as Citigroup (C: 3.81, 0.09, 2.42%) and JPMorgan (JPM: 39.462, 0.442, 1.13%), General Electric’s (GE: 17.31, 0.08, 0.46%) GE Capital will also contribute $20 million to the rescue effort. All the firms have either received massive government assistance during the financial crisis or, in the case of Goldman Sachs, are facing multiple regulatory investigations into their business practices.

The bailout has been controversial. Senior Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett served on a Chicago civic organization with a director of the bank, and President Obama himself has singled out the bank for praise in lending to low-income communities.

But the bank has made its share of bad bets, and some of the Wall Street firms that have given money have said they’ve received political pressure to contribute to the bailout of a business that under normal circumstances would have been left to fail.

It’s still unclear how much the federal government will contribute to save the bank because it’s unclear exactly how much is needed to save the institution, which without the bailout would have been taken over by the FDIC.

An announcement on the bailout is expected Tuesday morning.

  31. James B, Casey James will go back to Texas tonight on American Idol because he stunk up the joint last night in the Top 3 showdown, where the contestants only had to sing 2 songs.

As for next week’s likely Final 2 showdown between Lee DeWyze of IL and frontrunner Crystal Bowersox of OH, I still do NOT see Crystal winning this thing for several factors:
    1. Anti-female sentiment
    2. Red State Fatigue (all 8 Idol winners have been from Red States and it might be time for a Blue Stater like Lee for a shot)
    3. Casey’s supporters are very unlikely to back Crystal due to her lack of connecting to the American voters and picking safe song after safe song.
    4. Lee has momentum.

  48. I agree James. No way the Dems can avoid losing seats this fall. Midterms almost always favor the party out of power, esp. when one party has dominated the previous two cycles. But if the GOP was going to sweep to a 1994 style takeover you’d think they’d be able to win a seat like PA 12–which they lost by about 7 pts. This was the only house district in the nation that voted for Kerry in 2004 but for McCain in 2008.

If you want the truth you have to go beyond the bluster of talk radio and the tea parties. Most voters still aren’t convinced they should give the keys back to the GOP. Doesn’t mean they are wild about the Dems, but unlike 1994 when the Republicans hadn’t held control of the House in 40 yrs. everyone remembers what happened when the elephants ran the show. And they don’t look back on it fondly.

    • While I’m hardly sanguine about the Democratic prospects this year, the rule about a new administration’s first mid-term election is hardly a universal truth. Two clear exceptions would be 1934 and 2002, both, it must be admitted, in extreme circumstances. (1962 was a wash, with the GOP losing 2 Senators and gaining 2 Representatives.) How extreme or urgent things will look to the average voter this year I don’t know: unemployment may increase, the disaster in the Gulf has every prospect of turning into a decades-long catastrophe, and neither the financial markets nor foreign affairs look at all certain. Which party those contingencies might favor I’m certainly not smart enough to predict.
