commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

A little on Ole' Arlen's loss yesterday…..An Editorial…..

Arlen Specter.…The distinguished Senior Senator from Pennsylvania lost his bid for another six years in the Nations Congress….

The Democrat voters of his state have paved the way for him to end his career in early January of next year……

While the media talking heads and net’ Doctor’s scream about all the Bullshit…..

The Dog would like to say his piece…

Arlen Specter a lot of people don’t know…….’ran for District Attorney (of Philadelphia ), on the Republican ticket as a registered Democrat ‘….a won  big….In 1965 ……He served in that position for eight years……for the next seven years after he left the DA’s office he lost several chances to get elected to public office as a Republican…..

He won election to the US Senate in 1980 and has been there ever since…..

While the media crows about Ole’ Arlen..the fact is the man has severed his country and state well…

He is 80 years old, tough, erasable and pretty sharp….

But the real reason he lost yesterday isn’t about the national incumbant wave like the media and GOPer’s would like you think…

It’s about basic politics…

Ole’ Arlen IS old….That he couldn’t get away from….

Sestak is a fairly young man who  is a Democrat and doesn’t have the baggage of being a REPUBLICAN for the last 30 years…

In this day and age in of politics the simple fact of having a history is a disadvantage period…..

Arlen leaned on Obama…who needed him for Healthcare and few early votes…..

But could not or would not come back to his rescue for his own personal gain…..

Healthcare is going to demonstrate repaeatily the fact that presidents have a different constituency that congressmen…

They all know that…

But it’s terrible to watch in action….

Congressmen ARE expendable to president’s ..they always have been…..

The final fact is primaries themselves….

Because the dynamic for primaries favor the more involved REGULAR party voters..which never go above about 20 to 25% of the general voting public…..a lot of politicians find primaries the toughest race they have to run…

They must please the party people who don’t necessarily agree with what can be ACTUALLY passed in Congress…then track back with the knowledge that their opponent and the media will hold them accountable for the BS they needed to say to the primary voters….

Ole’ Arlen did his stay……

Now it’s time for a new batter……..

CD 'American Idol' Update……. Casey James will go back to Texas tonight …..

Casey James will go back to Texas tonight on American Idol because he stunk up the joint last night in the Top 3 showdown, where the contestants only had to sing 2 songs.

As for next week’s likely Final 2 showdown between Lee DeWyze of IL and frontrunner Crystal Bowersox of OH,……

I still do NOT see Crystal winning this thing for several factors:
1. Anti-female sentiment
2. Red State Fatigue (all 8 Idol winners have been from Red States and it might be time for a Blue Stater like Lee for a shot)
3. Casey’s supporters are very unlikely to back Crystal due to her lack of connecting to the American voters and picking safe song after safe song.
4. Lee has momentum.

Talkandpolitcs…….Mixed results from Super Tuesday ……

Projected results from todays voting:

  • Arlen Specter big lose in Dem PA-Sen.
  • Critz (D) safe win in PA-12
  • Rand Paul (R) takes Kentucky huge by +25.
  • Blanche Lincoln (D) heading for runoff.

Mostly good for the Democrats this time. PA-12 was the “referendum” vote which ended in favor of the current administration. A stronger Tea Party in Kentucky could spell trouble for the GOP, but too early to tell. And the Specter sacking is the democratic base of Pennsylvania rejecting the GOP defector, even if he gave the tipping vote for stimulus and health bill……

I couldn’t agree more…Thanks for saving me a post!

Manila….ShoreBank will be bailed out…….

Some of the nation’s largest banks have agreed to contribute enough money to save Chicago-based ShoreBank, the community lender with strong ties to the Obama administration, FOX Business has learned.

The banks have agreed to contribute $140 million to bail out the bank, while the federal government will donate tens of millions more, according to people close to the talks. In addition to major Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs (GS: 139.13, 1.72, 1.25%), which agreed to contribute $20 million to the bailout effort, as well as Citigroup (C: 3.81, 0.09, 2.42%) and JPMorgan (JPM: 39.462, 0.442, 1.13%), General Electric’s (GE: 17.31, 0.08, 0.46%) GE Capital will also contribute $20 million to the rescue effort. All the firms have either received massive government assistance during the financial crisis or, in the case of Goldman Sachs, are facing multiple regulatory investigations into their business practices.

The bailout has been controversial. Senior Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett served on a Chicago civic organization with a director of the bank, and President Obama himself has singled out the bank for praise in lending to low-income communities.

But the bank has made its share of bad bets, and some of the Wall Street firms that have given money have said they’ve received political pressure to contribute to the bailout of a business that under normal circumstances would have been left to fail.

It’s still unclear how much the federal government will contribute to save the bank because it’s unclear exactly how much is needed to save the institution, which without the bailout would have been taken over by the FDIC.

An announcement on the bailout is expected Tuesday morning.

MANILA

Why am I NOT surprised Manila?

Note…The Dog Messed up on the orignal post headlines and wishes to thank CW99 for pointing this out…..We messed up we apolizge….and have made it right…..

Taliban attack Bagram Airfield in Aftganistan?

File:C-130 Hercules at Bagram Air Base.jpg

[ Army UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters fly over a C-130 Hercules at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, as it prepares for a mission ]

Ok….

I’ll start with a quote from a U.S. military spokesman in the  last sentence of the Washington Post piece…..

“That’s a dog chasing a school bus. You don’t attack Bagram with 20 guys,” one U.S. official said. “Either they’re crazy or brave or both.”

That’s about it…..

The Taliban sent these guys up against the biggest US Air Base in the country…..

The result…..

…… one U.S. contractor ( DOA ), injured nine U.S. service members and inflicted minor damage on one of the base buildings…..The guard force on the base battled insurgents intensely for about two hours, until about 6 a.m., but sporadic gunfire could be heard for several more hours. Ten of the attackers, including four wearing explosives, were killed in the assault, officials said……

“Though it is clear the enemy intended a spectacular event” at Bagram Airfield, “they were unable to breach the perimeter and unable to detonate their suicide vests,” U.S. Army Lt. Col. Clarence Count Jr., a military spokesman, said in a statement.

The assault on Bagram came a day after a suicide car bomber targeted a U.S. convoy in Kabul, killing five U.S. service members, a Canadian and at least 12 Afghan civilians. That was the deadliest day of the year for American troops, as two more died in separate bombings.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for both attacks…..

Lawyers and Politicians in New York…..

Kathleen Rice…The Nassau County District Attorney is running to succeed Andrew Cuomo as New York State Attorney General….

The race started below the headlines….

No More….

Since she came in second in a upstate straw poll a couple of weeks ago….

Things have heated up…..

I correctly pointed that fact out here….

Make no mistake folks…Right now Kathleen Rice is the front runner..

She has Cuomo in her corner and as this post points out…BIG money…..

I’ve said this before I have met the lady a few times and I like what I see in how she has evolved…..

And I’ll post this now to get it out of the way…..She statred off as a Republican and switched over to the Democrats riding the Suozzi wave two elections ago in Nassau County…Suozzi’s gone and she’s on the cusp of getting a job the last two New York Governor’s ( I’m getting ahead of my self…Cuomo hasn’t won yet ) had before getting elected to Governor……

This piece is about a big white shoe law firm in New York City that does a lot of personal injury work backing Rice in the pocketbook….

I just got a comment from somebody here at the Dog about lawyers and politican’s…..The person was pissed about the connection…..

Get over it!…..

Most politician’s ARE lawyers……

And as you can see in the New York case with Rice…..Lawyers like to cosey up with politcian’s…..They ARE cut from the same cloth…..

The best one in the piece is the fact that the State’s Assembly Speaker, Sheldon Silver, who welds almost as much juice as the Governor , is a MEMBER of the subject of the piece. The law firm of Weitz and Luxenberg!……

He, he, he……

It doesn’t get any better than that!

Anyways ….The Dog thinks Ms. Rice is gonna be good for the State of New York…..

Weitz & Luxenberg, which is based in Manhattan, is one of the nation’s largest personal injury law firms. It counts Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver as among its members, a source of suspicion for critics of Mr. Silver, who has been a loyal ally of trial lawyers.

Now the firm is pouring money into the campaign of Kathleen M. Rice, the Nassau County district attorney, who is seen as the leading Democratic contender to succeed Andrew M. Cuomo as attorney general.

Five of Weitz’s lawyers, including its two founding partners, contributed $236,698 to the Rice campaign in the last year. In the most recent filing period, Weitz lawyers accounted for nearly 12 percent of the more than $1.4 million in contributions Ms. Rice reported.

And top lawyers at three firms that frequently work with Weitz — two of which are based in other states — also donated heavily. Factoring in these donations, the Weitz-connected contributions made up roughly 20 percent of the Rice campaign’s donations in the most recent filing period, which covers December and the first half of January.

Last spring, Ms. Rice hired Justin Weitz, the son of Perry Weitz, the top partner at Weitz & Luxenberg, to work as an assistant district attorney. Noting Justin Weitz’s qualifications, Eric Phillips, a spokesman for Ms. Rice, said, “The office didn’t believe he should be barred from such public service just because a member of his family is involved in politics.”

The Rice campaign dismissed any suggestions that the contributions were unusual, emphasizing that several of the law firm’s donors, including Mr. Weitz and Arthur Luxenberg, the managing partner, were Long Island residents who had long known Ms. Rice.

Her campaign also noted that the two men have a long history as Democratic donors, though state and federal records show they have never provided a similar share of another candidate’s fund-raising……

Note…..I don’t like the revolving door relationship between the lawyers and politican’s…but I’m too old and too smart to know that it isn’t going away…which is a shame……
