I am surprised Sarah would talk about BP considering

For eighteen years, TODD PALIN worked for BP in the North Slope oil fields of Alaska. In 2007, in order to avoid a conflict of interest relating to his wife’s position as governor, he took a leave[10] from his job as production supervisor when his employer became involved in natural gas pipeline negotiations with his wife’s administration.[3] Seven months later, because the family needed more income, Todd returned to BP. In order to avoid potential conflict of interest, this time he accepted a non-management position as a production operator.[1][10] He resigned from his job on September 18, 2009, with the stated reason of spending more time with his family.[1

  6. From Politicalwire:

“Rand Paul’s philosophy got in the way of reality.”

    — RNC Chairman Michael Steele, in an interview on Fox News Sunday, on Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul’s (R) recent controversial statements.

Yep, time to play by the rules Rand. Now the big question is whether or not his tea party devotees who flocked to his anti-establishment primary campaign will stick with him now that he is part of that establishment. I think they will, he’s still a Republican–and at the end of the day that’s what it’s REALLY all about for the “tea party”. But independents and moderates will be turned off. Personally I hope to see more statewide GOP nominees from the tea party bench. It’s good news for Democrats!

  40. Don’t Washington state Republicans have anyone else besides Rossi?

Not that it’s impossible for a two time state wide loser to be successful eventually, but maybe he needs to take a break or concentrate on another office he can win in the meantime like a house seat. For example, my Governor Jay Nixon lost two previous senate races (1988 and 1998) before winning the gubernatorial contest in 2008. But those two losses were 10 and 20 yrs. prior and inbetween he won 4 times as Attorney General so by 2008 he didn’t seem like a guy that was constantly running and losing.

“In Colorado and Arizona, Public Policy Polling sees Hispanic voters swinging dramatically towards Democrats in the wake of Arizona’s new immigration law.

“Hispanics in the Mountain West are leaning much more strongly toward the Democrats since the Arizona law was passed. The big question then becomes whether there are white voters who are going to go Republican this fall who wouldn’t have if that bill hadn’t been passed. We don’t see any evidence of that happening yet.”

Ben Smith: “This has always been Democrats’ belief about immigration politics: That among the voters for whom this is a single, motivating issue, whites may get more attention, but Hispanics are more numerous.”

  45. Jack, tell James B that his fav Crystal Bowersox will NOT win the Idol crown this week because of several factors:

    1. The Blue Staters (Lee is the only Blue stater left) are likely due for a victory for 8 years of Red State dominance just to piss Corey off.

    2. Crystal’s horrible appearance: her UGLY-ASS teeth, and the dreds are making folks back away from her in droves.

    3. Lee will benefit from getting Casey James’s supporters.

    4. Red State Fatigue.

  46. I do think that during the midterms the GOP is going to do better than they have recently in western states like AZ and CO.

So they will think that their decision to double down on the aging white demographic is working.

But that will be due primarily to angry white voters being the disproportionate % of those who turn out in midterms.

In 2012 they will be hard pressed to win those states and others with similar demographics in a Presidential year.

  58. At the State Opening of the new Parliament at Westminster, Queen Elizabeth delivered the Queen’s Speech, written by the government of the day and giving a general outline of the next year’s legislative programme. It’s rather similar in function to the U.S. President’s State of the Union Address.

Among various measures proposed by the Cameron-Clegg Coalition are the scrapping of national identity cards and other authoritarian legislation, election of big-city police commissioners (seems like a terrible idea to me, while elected police authorities would be good), monetary incentives to educate deprived children (the “pupil premium”), fixed five-year parliaments and a minimum no-confidence vote of 55%.

The real pain ($10 billion in spending cuts) will come in an emergency budget on June 22nd. When the full budget is completed, there will be far more pain; the 6-billion-pound ($10 b) cut is just an appetizer, which the Tories insist should be served now, while during the election campaign, both Labour and the Liberal Democrats followed the great Liberal economist John Maynard Keynes in saying it should wait until the economy stops falling.

See Queen’s Speech: Cameron hails ‘radical’ programme

    Details here:

Bill-by-bill: All the measures in the 2010 programme at-a-glance

Following tradition, the first response to the Queen’s Speech was delivered by the acting Leader of H.M. Opposition, Harriet Harman (Labour).

Watch fifty minutes of her speech and David Cameron’s rebuttal (and/or read a written summary) here:
