Deal on 'Don't Ask…Don't Tell?…….A Repeal…that isn't really a Repeal…….

Ok….

I’m  a little confused…..

I think it means that the Congress WILL pass a  bill repealing the policy…

But that the Bill doesn’t authorize the change until Gates comes back with a study on the issue from the Military?

WTF does that mean?

What if there isn’t ever a study released?

What if Gates…not the President says no go?

This doesn’t sound like much of a deal…

It sounds like they are deep sixing the issue till late this year…after the November elections?……

The compromise was finalized in meetings Monday at the White House and on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers will now, within days, vote on amendments that would repeal the Clinton-era policy, with a provision ensuring that any change would not take effect until after the Pentagon completes a study about its impact on troops. That study is due to Congress by Dec. 1.

In a letter to lawmakers pushing for a legislative repeal, White House budget director Peter Orszag wrote Monday that the administration “supports the proposed amendment.”

“Such an approach recognizes the critical need to allow our military and their families the full opportunity to inform and shape the implementation process through a thorough understanding of their concerns, insights and suggestions,” he wrote.

While gay rights advocates hailed the move as a “dramatic breakthrough,” it remained uncertain whether the deal would secure enough votes to pass both houses of Congress. Republicans have vowed to maintain “don’t ask, don’t tell,” while conservative Democrats have said they would oppose a repeal unless military leaders made it clear that they approved of such a change.

Even if the compromise language passes, a legislative repeal would take effect only after Obama certified that the change would not harm the nation’s military readiness.

In a statement, Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese said the announcement “paves the path to fulfill the President’s call to end ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ this year and puts us one step closer to removing this stain from the laws of our nation.”

Note….Congress and White House have to love this!….A Repeal that ISN’T really a Repeal…..

New York Times on the US war in the Middle East….and Barack H. Obama the War time President……

[ U.S. Special Operations forces during a joint operation with Afghan National Army soldiers targeting insurgents operating in Afghanistan (AP) ]

In today’s New York Times there is a piece about General Patreaus signing off on an order that authorizes the US Military to ‘take the gloves off’ and ‘go hunting’ or ‘disrupt militant groups or counter threats in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and other countries in the region’, according to defense officials and military documents.

Is this really a surprise?

The reporter has evidently been shown a copy of  The directive, ‘the Joint Unconventional Warfare Task Force Execute Order’, signed Sept. 30……

This was probably leaked by some regular army people who really don’t like the increase in Special Operations in the region…..

‘Shit happens….’

As with any large amount of people doing a lot of things….

People get their egos hurt……

The Dog has been wondering for a long time when the US was going to go on the offensive…..

No one likes to go to war…but if you have to go……Go hard…….

With your heart in it……..

The Powell Doctrine……Massive amounts of overwhelming  force…….

And one last thing…

ALL WAR campaigns carry risk….

Barack H. Obama, the Commander-in- Chief, and Black, Wartime Democratic President…..

Hot Damn!

The secret directive, signed in September by Gen. David H. Petraeus, authorizes the sending of American Special Operations troops to both friendly and hostile nations in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Horn of Africa to gather intelligence and build ties with local forces. Officials said the order also permits reconnaissance that could pave the way for possible military strikes in Iran if tensions over its nuclear ambitions escalate.

While the Bush administration had approved some clandestine military activities far from designated war zones, the new order is intended to make such efforts more systematic and long term, officials said. Its goals are to build networks that could “penetrate, disrupt, defeat or destroy” Al Qaeda and other militant groups, as well as to “prepare the environment” for future attacks by American or local military forces, the document said. The order, however, does not appear to authorize offensive strikes in any specific countries.

In broadening its secret activities, the United States military has also sought in recent years to break its dependence on the Central Intelligence Agency and other spy agencies for information in countries without a significant American troop presence.

General Petraeus’s order is meant for use of small teams of American troops to fill intelligence gaps about terror organizations and other threats in the Middle East and beyond, especially emerging groups plotting attacks against the United States.

But some Pentagon officials worry that the expanded role carries risks. The authorized activities could strain relationships with friendly governments like Saudi Arabia or Yemen — which might allow the operations but be loath to acknowledge their cooperation — or incite the anger of hostile nations like Iran and Syria. Many in the military are also concerned that as American troops assume roles far from traditional combat, they would be at risk of being treated as spies if captured and denied the Geneva Convention protections afforded military detainees.

The precise operations that the directive authorizes are unclear, and what the military has done to follow through on the order is uncertain. The document, a copy of which was viewed by The New York Times, provides few details about continuing missions or intelligence-gathering operations.

Several government officials who described the impetus for the order would speak only on condition of anonymity because the document is classified. Spokesmen for the White House and the Pentagon declined to comment for this article. The Times, responding to concerns about troop safety raised by an official at United States Central Command, the military headquarters run by General Petraeus, withheld some details about how troops could be deployed in certain countries.

CD …….American Idol Winner pick…….

………..tell James B that his fav Crystal Bowersox will NOT win the Idol crown this week because of several factors:
1. The Blue Staters (Lee is the only Blue stater left) are likely due for a victory for 8 years of Red State dominance just to piss Corey off.

2. Crystal’s horrible appearance: her UGLY-ASS teeth, and the dreds are making folks back away from her in droves.

3. Lee will benefit from getting Casey James’s supporters.

4. Red State Fatigue.

5. A Lee DeWyze victory is going to make President Obama happy.

ScottP…….Midterm Elections and The GOP…….Hispanic Voters in Az and Co….

I do think that during the midterms the GOP is going to do better than they have recently in western states like AZ and CO.

So they will think that their decision to double down on the aging white demographic is working.

But that will be due primarily to angry white voters being the disproportionate % of those who turn out in midterms.

In 2012 they will be hard pressed to win those states and others with similar demographics in a Presidential year.

…………………………………..

From Politicalwire:

“In Colorado and Arizona, Public Policy Polling sees Hispanic voters swinging dramatically towards Democrats in the wake of Arizona’s new immigration law.

“Hispanics in the Mountain West are leaning much more strongly toward the Democrats since the Arizona law was passed. The big question then becomes whether there are white voters who are going to go Republican this fall who wouldn’t have if that bill hadn’t been passed. We don’t see any evidence of that happening yet.”

Ben Smith: “This has always been Democrats’ belief about immigration politics: That among the voters for whom this is a single, motivating issue, whites may get more attention, but Hispanics are more numerous.”

Daily Manila…..The Border…….

So First Alert can’t do everything.

Big surprise.

I say go with land mines and especially machine guns in guard towers!

So I can get a job.

That gives a 80% pension after 20 years.

And the Indians (Asian immigrants) had no permission to be here either.

And they used to rob and kill each other.

Over roots and berries.

And an occasional slave or squaw.

Who knew how to cook the roots and berries.

But not horses or firearms.

Creating the Indian way of life.

Like in the old western movies.

The European’s introduced those dog soldiers.

So be warned!

North America was once part of Ireland before the Continental shift took place.

A woolly Mammoth told me so!

So if your not Irish

You have to leave!

(Right after the next beer.)
