The Mets beat the Phillies 8 zip!

I didn’t think the Mets still had it in them!

The Phillies?

A manager named Manuel showed a glimpse of worry Tuesday night, but it wasn’t Jerry, and it only served to strengthen the job security of the Mets skipper.

Speaking to reporters before Tuesday night’s NL East showdown between the first-place Phillies and the last-place Mets, Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel showed nothing but respect for the Mets, especially after they took two of three over the weekend from the Yankees.

“They always play us good,” he said. “Three or four days of good playing and they could be in first. The records don’t mean anything.”

A Met ascension to the top of the standings, or somewhere in the vicinity, doesn’t seem far-fetched following last night’s 8-0 victory at Citi Field – the club’s third and fourth in their past five games. They now trail the Phillies by four games, and will host them Wednesday and Thursday as Hisanori Takahashi and Mike Pelfrey will get the ball and look to make up more ground.

They took the first step Tuesday night as Jose Reyes led off the first inning with a single, becoming the fastest player in franchise history to record his 1,000th career hit (835 games). He advanced to second on Luis Castillo‘s sacrifice bunt and then stole third, putting himself in position to scored on Jason Bay‘s grounder to third as the Mets took a 1-0 lead against the soft-throwing Jamie Moyer, who took the loss and fell to 5-4 after five innings of work…..
