The 'Top Kill' mud strategy stops the Gulf Oil flow…Will it hold….Can they permanently cap the well?…and Drilling goes on in other places…..

As I have posted here in the ‘Fallout’ pieces….

You knew they would fix the leaking oil problem sooner or later….

Ret. Admiral Thad Allen announce today that BP ‘Top Kill’ method of flooding the pipe has worked…

The engineer’s now have to follow thru with pouring cement over the whole thing to cap it…..

The technical attack on the problem took time..but there was never any doubt really that it would work…

With the oil rolling in on the beaches and inlets in Louisiana and soon other states…the media hype is starting to run on full blast…

Dumping its wrath on Washington and yes…..President Obama……
The “top kill” effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers, had pumped enough drilling fluid to block oil and gas spewing from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well was very low, he said, but persisting. The top kill effort is not complete, officials caution.

Once engineers had reduced the well pressure to zero, they were to begin pumping cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help in that effort, he said, engineers also were pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well.
As of early Thursday morning, neither government nor BP officials had declared the effort a success yet, pending the completion of the cementing and sealing of the well.

Allen said one ship that was pumping fluid into the well had run out of the fluid, or “mud,” and that a second ship was on the way. He said he was encouraged by the progress.

The headlines are screaming that the President has capped all Drilling for 6 months…

That isn’t quite true…

He has halted all DEEP WATER drilling…all shallow water drilling will continue to be approved…

The Shell Oil Alaska drilling Project will be on hold….

The country simply cannot stop ALL drilling…..

Obama is continuing the ban on deepwater wells announced last month for another half-year while a bipartisan independent commission he recently established probes the Gulf spill and needed safety and regulatory improvements.

Planned drilling in shallower waters off Alaska’s coast will also be delayed pending the commission review, a White House aide said. However, other shallow-water permits will now be able to proceed with new safety conditions, another official said.

Obama’s comments Thursday will follow his receipt of a more accelerated, 30-day Interior Department safety review that Obama ordered last month.

“The president will discuss the conclusions of the 30-day safety review on offshore drilling he directed Secretary Salazar to conduct,” an administration official said.

“He will announce standards to strengthen oversight of the industry and enhance safety, a first step in a process that the independent Presidential Commission will continue,” the official added.

Salazar declined to discuss the specifics of the upcoming White House announcement. But he broadly cited a need to improve offshore practices.

“We need to make sure that if there is going to be deepwater drilling in the outer continental shelf that it is going to be done safely,” Salazar said.
