Add Trinidad to the list of countries with women leaders…….The US is not on the list…..

The list grows longer every year……

And points out American’r reluctance to accept the idea that an woman can lead THIS country…..

A woman became prime minister of Trinidad Wednesday, a first in that country.

Kamla Persad Bissessar
Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s party, the People’s Partnership, ousted incumbent Patrick Manning in Monday’s election in the Caribbean nation.

This first leads us to ponder the numbers and progress of women as political leaders in the world — and in the United States.

Here’s a look at some of the numbers:

23 nations or independent states are ruled by women, according to the Worldwide Guide to Women in Leadership.

10 countries have women presidents: Argentina, Costa Rica, Finland, India, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Lithuania, The Philippines and Switzerland.

7 countries are lead by female prime ministers: Bangladesh, Germany, Iceland, The Netherlands Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago and the Aland Islands.

3 monarchies are led by queens: Denmark, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

3 women are governors-general, appointed by the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth: in Antigua and Barbuda; Australia; Canada and Saint Lucia.

Some of the famous female world leaders:

Sirimavo Bandaranaike was the first woman prime minister, serving in Sri Lanka beginning in 1960 (her party was re-elected in 1970 and in 1994).

Indira Gandhi became prime minister of India in 1966 and again in 1980.

Golda Meir took office as prime minister of Israel in 1969, serving until 1974.

  6. Technically, you can pass over the male and female governors-general of the dozen-odd British dominions (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, et al.) because they all have a female head of state: Queen Elizabeth II.

Some of them also have or have had a female governor-general (e.g. Canada) and/or female prime minister (e.g. Margaret Thatcher), just as some republics have had both a female President and a female prime minister (sometimes at the same time).
