commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

Editorial……The Government Should NOT take over BP…….

Those of you here know where I come from….

Yet this BP Gulf Oil Spill has got me a little annoyed….

First I see people on here saying President Obama is responsible for the Spill???

WTF did he do?

He doesn’t drill for oil…..He’s a politician….

Now I hear some real idiots crying for the US Government to ‘Take Over BP and the Oil Pipe leak action’…..

It goes from the sublime to the ridicules!

Would you let a cop operate on your mother is she started bleeding and couldn’t stop?

Of course not!

Listen people…..I got news for ya….

As I said from the jump…..

People are going to have to wait on this….

I know that doesn’t sound reasonable to the people in those Gulf States…But that about what is going to happen…..

Let me review something I have pointed out ….

The UNITED STATES GOVERNMNET doesn’t drill for Oil…

Certainly not in  5,000 feet  of water…..

Another point…..

The oil spill…even at its worst represents less than 1% of the oil below water in the Gulf of Mexico….

Something else to think about…..I know it sounds assine..but that well is a really good one……That BP will eventually cap and DRAW MORE OIL FROM…..

The oil that they draw from the leaking well will probably cover any and all fines that the government will end up collecting from BP….

I Save the best for last…

The fact is…… this country consumes oil and gas at HUGE levels…

There is no way the President of the United States is going to keep……OIL companies from continuing to drill for oil..

It is in this countries National interest to keep pumping oil out of the earth…..

While the people on the Gulf coast are screwed today….Those state’s  economic life depends a large part on …..

YES…..

Oil……..

Is BP gonna get a big bill……Yes…

Will they probably have to change their name again…..Yes

No matter home many rules, regs or policies does SHIT HAPPEN?……Yes

As someone pointed out at this site….

All those states have Republican’s in charge…..

You know……. The Same people who complain about Washington…..

Isn’t it ironic that these same people are complaining that Washington isn’t doing ENOUGH?

  1. I certainly wouldnt advocate ceasing oil drilling

But this deregulation mania that the Republicans and to a lesser extent even certain Democrats are caught up in

    Has gone WAY too far

The sordid history of attempts to make regulations less “burdensome” for big oil is well known and doesnt need to be recounted here

The result of all this will be tighter regulations and hopefully a big financial hit for BP

  2. During World War I, Woodrow Wilson’s less-than-liberal government took over the railroads and put them under a Federal Railroad Administrator (William Gibbs McAdoo). That didn’t mean that all the multifarious experts, technicians and engineers stopped operating the schedules, rolling stock and rights of way (they would have been drafted had they tried, and sent straight back to their old posts), but Uncle Sam was running the show during a national emergency.

Just because this is so slow-moving, and the immediate casualties occurred in April, doesn’t mean that this isn’t an enormous national emergency, so there’s no theoretical reason not to kick out BP’s top brass who spend so much effort on protecting their image, profits and legal liability, in order to manage this as best it can be managed in the interests of the nation and the environment.

[However, for a contrasting opinion from the Supreme Court, see Youngstown Sheet and Tube v. Sawyer, (1952), 343 U.S. 937, from a Korean War takeover attempt by Harry S. Truman.]

Whether that’s the wisest course is another question.

    • This is like the health care bill; I can only half-cheer (with doubts) the Justice Dept travelling road show.

In legal terms, it’s still such early days that not much will happen in real time. That doesn’t mean that documents shouldn’t be secured or statements taken, but the great Show Trial we all want won’t even enter preliminary speculative stages until much more evidence becomes clear.

I don’t know if Obama only knows politics rather than how to govern, or if he’s doing the latter but has to do some pre-emptive political theatre to staunch the inevitable (Katrina-like) drain this will have on his popularity and Democratic numbers.

The Democrats have to win or hold legislatures and governorships this year in advance of redistricting.

      • So now on top caping the damn thing…they gotta worry about criminal charges…..WTF would they say anything to the press now?

  5. Yeah I hope Holder has the gonads to lock up at least one of these creeps.

Honestly I think the Democrats have been too close to Big Oil. But to think that ANY Republicans in the last generation would be any better when it comes to regulation of industry and environmental protection is the acme of foolishness!

This is pure opportunism on the part of the GOP. If you doubt that prove me wrong– show me ONE TIME prior to this spill that the Republicans didn’t brag about being more pro-drill than the Democrats.
