commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

Open Thread for June 2nd …….

The June 1st Primary is gone……

Some real surprises for the masses……

Some not…..

Artur Davis lost…He never really had a chance running to right …in the South…As a black Democrat….

Parker Griffith lost also……

He never really survived the switch in parties…..

The remarkable thing is that a lot of races simply didn’t come out the way the polls said they would….

He, he, he,,,,,Like I said several times ….The Nate Silver post was right….He said that Southern Primary polls tend to be off as much as 9% points….

The Israeli’s and the Turks have problems….

The Biggest Gun sometimes doesn’t work against non-violence…

Obama gets stuck here…

The BP saga isn’t gonna get better by criminalizing an accident WHILE you’re trying to solve the problem….

Harry Reid is starting to look good……

And the V-22 is good aircraft …..that has a bad…bad…rep……

And SE gets the PRIZE for his help here on the June 1st Special Primary Coverage!

Daniel is also given props for setting the coverage up and starting it off

Yoeman’s Job!

I know no one is gonna think so…..

But my Salt post is one of the most important ones I have done since I started this site…….

Happy Birthday to my Mom!

Keep it up People!

The main allegation is that Labour delivered a suspiciously-high number of postal ballots by hand in a batch, and that they were counted away from the main ballot-counting area.

  2. Ken Livingstone wants to run again for Mayor of Greater London (not Lord Mayor of the City of London) against the Tory who unseated him, current Mayor Boris Johnson. But first Livingstone needs to win the Labour Party’s nomination. (For part of the Tony Blair ministry, Livingstone was denied official Labour recognition.)

  3. Oh if only Corey visited this site, we could ask him for his spin on his beloved US Senate candidate Mark Kirk. Now in addition to admitting that he misrepresented awards he received as a Naval intelligence officer (several times he boasted that he received the award individually when it was given to his whole unit) now it appears that Kirk has lied about serving IN Iraqi Freedom, claiming he was the only member of Congress to do so when in actuality he served stateside in the Reserves.

Now I called Blumenthal’s lies about serving IN Vietnam what they were–shameless lies. I wonder what kind of spin our Republicans have for ole Kirky?

  5. Scott, you will never be able to get rid of me!

There was a mistake on the website, but the situation between Mark Kirk and Blumenthal is completely different.

Mark Kirk did serve during Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Member of Congress. Previously, he did actually serve, both stateside, and overseas during conflict with Iraq, Haiti, and Bosnia, saw combat, and was highly decorated for his military service.

People who never served a day in their life are now trying to “swift boat” him, but it is unlikely to succeed.

  6. George W. Bush served stateside during Vietnam in the reserves (at least for a while) but he never misrepresented his service and claimed he served IN country, something that both Blumenthal and Kirk have now done.

    Comment by Scott P | June 2, 2010 | Reply

  7. It’s a matter of semantics. He said he served in Operation Iraqi Freedom which is accurate. As far as I know, he did not say he served in the country of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Before Operation Iraqi Freedom, he did fly missions inside of Iraq.

His military record speaks for itself. Hopefully, the campaign and the candidate will be careful with semantics considering the opposition has really nothing to run on considering who their nominee is.

      Comment by jamesb101 | June 2, 2010 | Reply

  8. True…but there was that bit about his advertising his military service….and him getting a few favors because of his Dad…..

And him having problems even showing up for the Reserves……

  9. Talking about GWB and his military service?

I seem to recall that backfiring on Democrats in 2004. Records indicate GWB served and was honorably discharged and received no special treatment.

It has nothing to do with Mark Kirk, who has a stellar military record, which I am sure the campaign wants highlighted anyway possible. Alexi Giannoulias has failed in everything professional endeavor he has ever done and is plagued by scandal.

The Blago trial starts in Chicago tomorrow though, so that probably will take over the political news for a while.

    Go Blackhawks!

  10. As for the award that Mark Kirk has been claiming to have won throughout the years, his commanding officer released a statement that says:

“When I nominated Mark for the Rufus Taylor award I thought it was more specific to Mark and not his team. But the reality is, there would have been no team without Mark Kirk’s leadership and there certainly would have been no award. I can certainly understand why he would have referred to this award over the years as intelligence officer of the year – it’s how I viewed the award. And in actuality, the two awards in question are of equal stature and significance.”

I don’t think it should disqualify either of them from the Senate race, but it certainly complicates things. And a Republican in Illinois has less room for error than a Democrat in Connecticut.

Of course neither of them have stellar opponents. Giannouilias has some issues, but McMahon has whole subscriptions (and prescriptions if you catch my drift).

Once I read my newspaper, the Houston Chronicle and learned what happened in AL, I decided to back the GOP nominee regardless who it is, likely Bradley Byrne in November.

  85. Labour ex-minister Adam Ingram has admitted misleading MPs over British troops’ hooding of Iraqi prisoners.

In a Parliamentary answer he denied UK forces used hooding as an interrogation technique despite having seen papers to the contrary, a public inquiry heard.

The inquiry is investigating claims UK soldiers beat to death Iraqi Baha Mousa, 26, in Basra in September 2003.

Mr Ingram was copied in on a memo that revealed Mr Mousa was hooded for nearly 24 of 36 hours in custody before dying.

He also received another document stating Mr Mousa, a hotel receptionist, and his colleagues were hooded on the advice of an interrogation expert.

Mr Ingram had assured the then head of the Parliamentary joint committee on human rights, Jean Corston, that hooding was only used while detainees were being transported.
In a letter dated nine months after Mr Mousa’s death, he wrote: “I should make absolutely clear that hooding was only used during the transit of prisoners. It was not used as an interrogation technique.”

But he admitted to the inquiry in London on Wednesday this information should have been “more specific”…..
