Update….Rick Lazio IS the GOP nominee…Levy doesn’t make it……

Steve Levy looks likes he’s day late and dollar short in his conversion from a Democrat to a Republican to run for New York State Governor…

In his typical excentric fashion…he pissed off everyone and missed the boat…

As a matter of fact …..Levy running has actually HELP Rick Lazio secure the nomination…… it will probably turn out….Since Levy actual switch in parties technically doesn’t happen until next year…..

The man is ill at ease with the world…. it seems……

Lazio’s spot on a Republican primary ballot is all but assured, given the strong support he has among Republican committee members across the state. His loyalists point to Lazio’s early entrance in the race and his long-standing party credentials.

Levy, who has the support of Republican state Chairman Ed Cox, has two hurdles to clear today at the Republican state convention.

First, Levy must get the votes of 25 percent of the Republican committee delegates, weighted by the population of each county. If he gets that, then the Suffolk County executive needs 50 percent of the vote plus one to get on a primary ballot — since his enrollment from Democrat to Republican doesn’t take effect until next year.

Now who is Carl Paladino?

The party is likely to have a primary even if Levy fails to win a spot on the ballot, because Buffalo businessman Carl Paladino, who has a $10 million war chest, plans to petition his way on to the primary ballot — an option that Levy is denied because of his Democratic enrollment.

Paladino is also talking about running on a separate “Tea Party-oriented line.”

The Tea Party movement, as poorly defined as it may be, is having an impact here. Republicans with Tea Party leanings appear to be backing Levy as well as Paladino, who has positioned himself on the right wing of the GOP.

“We’re swaying more toward Levy because he’s fiscally conservative,” said Catherine Tenek, a Tea Party activist from Suffolk County who was furloughed last year by Levy from her job as a county heavy equipment operator. Despite the hit to her pocketbook, she said she respects Levy’s hard-line approach to government cost-cutting.

Lazio supporters are suspicious of Levy’s late-in-life switch from Democrat to Republican.

  2. I remember when Republicans were just CERTAIN Lazio was going to trounce Hillary 10 yrs. ago.

Of course most of those Republicans never set foot in New York, but they were just sure that everyone else hated Hillary as much as they did back at the county GOP headquarters.
