Strasburg…The National’s pitching wonder…Makes the SI cover….

The question is …..

Can he keep it going?

Can he carry the team?

Stephen Strasburg is on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week, at least for everyone not in the Chicago market. This is, I believe, the first time a member of the Nats has been the primary subject of an SI cover. (UPDATE: Svlurga writes in to say that Ryan Zimmerman appeared onthe fold-out portion of this cover. My bad.)

It’s also only the second time a D.C. pro athlete has been featured on SI’s cover since this blog began in 2006.

In those five years, I believe this is the sixth time a D.C. athlete has been featured, though it’s certainly possible I’ve missed some.

But let’s put to lie this notion of an SI cover jinx, at least as far as D.C. athletes are concerned.

  1. that guy throws some serious heat. 98 to 101mph fastball. nice. barring injuries he should take off ok. he may tone down his heat to 94 to 95mph ranges to extend himself.

  3. joba. yes i know well. joba was throwing 99 to 100mph in the pen in 2007, 96/97mph in 2008. high pitch counts as a horrible starter in 2009. and back in the pen hitting 93/94mph. hits 96mph sometimes.

  4. james, my understanding the nationals will keep that kid under wraps this year. the yanks are keeping phil hughes on a innings limit. total bs. let the kid pitch 200 plus if he can. tired of clubs babying pitchers. they are young, strong and full of piss and v.

  5. let’s not make that national kid to be the next nolan ryan/roger clemens/randy johnson though. look what happened to kerry wood. striking out 20, a couple of 200 stikeout seasons and he is now regulated to the bullpen nowadays.
