Anti-government protesters demonstrate in front of Egypt’s national television headquarters in Cairo. Furious demonstrators protested throughout Egypt a day after President Hosni Mubarak announced that he would remain in office through the September elections.

President Hosni Mubarak left Cairoon Friday, reportedly for his home on the Red Sea, as protesters marched on federal buildings and the army guaranteed it would assert authority to carry out government promises for reform and the prospect of lifting the country’s 30-year-old emergency law.

The military – seeking to retain order and not jeopardize its close bond with the public – suggested it would ensure that pledges made by Mubarak on Thursday night would be fulfilled. The army’s position was announced in a statement by the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces.

But Egypt’s biggest crisis in years continued to spin out of control despite the government’s fumbling efforts to once more reassert control of the situation and find common ground with the protesters, who rose up 18 days ago against Mubarak’s 30-year-reign…..
