commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

Chick Fil A…..Corey….

The big pressing issue that is on everyone’s mind today is Chick Fil A. That is basically all that is being discussed.

Do government entities, such as politicians in Boston and Chicago have been suggesting this week, have the right to stop a business from operating, simply because they do not like a personal opinion held by the business owner? In this case, it is regarding the owner of Chick Fil A’s religious views opposing same sex marriage.

This is not at all a discrimination issue involving who the restaurant serves or hires but simply because the guy who founded the chain opposes gay marriage?

Whatever your view on the marriage issue, what these groups, and liberal politicians in Boston and Chicago have been saying this week should be quite abhorrent to anyone who claims to believe in tolerance and civil liberties.

Chick-fil-A, the fast-food chain known for putting faith ahead of profits by closing on Sundays, is standing firm in its opposition to gay marriage after touching off a furor earlier this month.

Gay rights groups have called for a boycott, the Jim Henson Co. pulled its Muppet toys from kids’ meals, and politicians in Boston and Chicago told the chain it is not welcome there.

Across the Bible Belt, where most of the 1,600 restaurants are situated, Christian conservatives have thrown their support behind the Atlanta-based company, promising to buy chicken sandwiches and waffle fries next week on “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.”

The latest skirmish in the nation’s culture wars began when Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press that the company was “guilty as charged” for backing “the biblical definition of a family.” In a later radio interview, he ratcheted up the rhetoric: “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.'”

That fired up gay rights advocates, including a group that waged a campaign against the company in recent years by publicizing $3 million in contributions that the Cathy family foundation has made to conservative organizations such as the Family Research Council….

Newt and Company get a little racist….

First the kids cleaning their schools comment….

Now….. Running as low as fourth in New Hampshire polls…

Newton ‘Newt’ Gingrich comes out with THIS wiseassed crack….

The guy needs to go home…..

Rick Santorum seems to be NOT much better…..

Mentioning something about ‘people giving blacks money’……

Newt Gingrich Naacp Food Stamps

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Thursday he is willing to go before the NAACP and urge blacks to demand paychecks, not food stamps.

Gingrich told a town hall meeting at a senior center in Plymouth, N.H., that if the NAACP invites him to its annual convention this year, he’d go there and talk about “why the African-American community should demand paychecks and not be satisfied with food stamps.”

He also said he’d pitch a new Social Security program aimed at helping young people, particularly African-American males, who he said get the smallest return on Social Security.

Gingrich routinely lambasts President Barack Obama as the “best food stamp president in American history.” He also has spoken previously about welcoming an invitation from the NAACP to speak and has been critical of GOP candidates who have not accepted such an invitation.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had no immediate comment on Gingrich’s remarks. His campaign spokesman, R.C. Hammond, said the former Georgia congressman has often said the GOP needs to be inclusive of all Americans.

“He has said since he became a presidential candidate that any Republican should always accept an invitation to speak to the NAACP on any topic,” Hammond said.

Gingrich’s comments follow those by rival candidate Rick Santorum, a former senator from Pennsylvania who said Sunday that he did not want to “make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.”

Santorum’s comments were criticized by National Urban League President Marc H. Morial as pandering to racist elements within the GOP. Morial also said that 70 percent of people on food stamps are white. The Agriculture Department does not break down food stamp participation rates by race…..

10 Years after 9/11 2001….New York City and the World will remember…..

It is with a heavy heart that I will get thru September 11, 2011…

For I knew personally some of the people who did not come home from that days events…

For that day 10 years ago my job was to comfort the children on the people who worked in New York City…

On that day my contribution was to assure those worried that their children were in a safe place….

I am happy to One World Trade Center rebuilt….

I spent passing time in the old one….

I pass on my prays to people who lost loved ones on that day in threelocations in America…

I pray for strength for the people who have to live with their loses…

And I hope that while some of us may complain about the coasts…

I can only hope that our Government and it’s actor will spare nothing to do what ever they can to make sure that

like this will EVER happen again….

The Dog…..

From the New York Times…..

New York City will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a ceremony at the World Trade Center site on Sunday, when the nation pauses to grieve for the dead and reflect on the decade since terrorists toppled the Twin Towers, damaged the Pentagon and crashed a jetliner in rural Pennsylvania.

President Barack Obama and his predecessor, former President George W. Bush, will be among the eight current or former elected officials to deliver readings at the ceremony, which is set to begin at 8:35 a.m. with the sound of bagpipes and drummers. Mr. Obama, the first sitting president to attend the annual ceremony, gave the green light earlier this year for the military mission that killed Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the deadliest foreign attack on American soil.

While most of the attention will focus on New York’s ceremony, there will also be events at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania, plus many smaller observances in communities across the country, from a stair climb in Seattle to a 9/11 memorial dedication in Sarasota, Fla.

On Saturday in Shanksville, Pa., the 40 passengers and crew who fought back against their hijackers aboard Flight 93 before it crashed on Sept. 11 were honored for their heroism in a ceremony dedicating the first phase of a memorial at the nation’s newest national park, the Associated Press reported.

The hijackers intended to crash the plane in Washington but “never made it because of the determination and valor of the passengers and crew of Flight 93, that plane crashed in this field, less than 20 minutes by air” from the target, said Jon Jarvis, director of the National Park Service, according to the AP.

Vice President Joe Biden and former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were among those attending the Shanksville event, the AP said.

The 10th anniversary also marks the official opening of the National September 11 Memorial—twin reflecting pools that sit within the footprints of the Twin Towers and feature bronze panels on which the names of the dead are inscribed. A 9/11 museum is scheduled to open at the World Trade Center site next September.

“As we reflect back on the past, let us remember not only the agony and anguish of the attacks but how we channeled our pain into something positive and powerful,” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday in a speech about the rebirth of Lower Manhattan. “Let us remember not only how the towers fell, but how we rose up—determined to defend our freedoms.”

Arrests of illegal crossers along the Southwest border dropped more than two-thirds from 2000 to 2010…

Border fence

The desert sand east of San Luis, Ariz., is imprinted with Border Patrol tracks in this 2007 photo. New stadium lighting, triple fencing, more border agents and the recession are credited with a plunge in the numbers of illegal crossings in the Southwest since 2000. (Don Bartletti / Los Angeles Times)

Last night a commentor lamented the call by this Dog and the President for Immigration reform….

The post was long and criticized ANY let up in illegal immigration enforcement….

That same posted should read this linked piece…

The Illegal immigration problem is fading….

While there will always be illegals….

There really isn’t any reason to keep hiring more Border Patrol people….

Nor is there any reason to build anymore fences or walls….

It seems that a lousy economy has slowed the influx of people better than any wall, border patrol person , or other Government law enforcement tool….

Enough with this more enforcement bullshit…

We need reform of the laws to address the problems in the current system that penalized people who serve this country and can’t get citizenship….

We need a system to not ship out young children that only know America as their country….

And a way to address needs of this country for people who can help it grow and prosper….

Wild foot chases and dust-swirling car pursuits may be the adrenaline-pumping stuff of recruitment efforts, but agents on the U.S.-Mexico border these days have to deal with a more mundane occupational reality: the boredom of guarding a frontier where illegal crossings have dipped to record low levels.

Porous corridors along the 2,000-mile border do remain, mostly in the Tucson area, requiring constant vigilance. But beefed-up enforcement and the job-killing effects of the great recession have combined to reduce the flood of immigrants in many former hot spots to a trickle.

Apprehensions along the Southwest border overall dropped more than two-thirds from 2000 to 2010, from 1.6 million to 448,000, and almost every region has lonely posts where agents sit for hours staring at the barrier, watching the “fence rust” as some put it.

“When the traffic stops … of course it’s going to be difficult for the agents to stay interested,” said Supervisory Agent Ken Quillin, from the agency’s Yuma, Ariz., sector. “I understand guys have a tough time staying awake…. they didn’t join the border patrol to sit on an X,” Quillin added, using the slang term for line watch duty……

We now need to seperate the fact of this issue from the hyped fiction….

Who keeps winning?

The story in the political junkies news over the last 36 hours is the bambozzelment of the House GOPers…..

While the media may be still screaming the echo’s of the last months GOP iron fisted demands….

The fact is…

Obama and the Senate Democrats out foxed Boehner and the House newbies…..

Without fan fair there have be stories coming out in the past 24 hours that the ACTUAL budget cuts for 2011 are anywhere from $17B to less than $1B….

Now I DO remember the newly elected GOP House members and their Tea Party friends demanding $100B in cuts….

That didn’t happen…

Did it?

We now see House GOP Boehner trying to put a good face on being fleeced by the Democrats who used the Senate Democrats, House Democrats and a dealing President to again sell the GOP snake oil….

As with the first budget bill fight……

Just when the GOP thought they had everybody on the ropes…..

They didn’t…..

I said this several times …

Everybody keep bitching about Obama not having any balls (I certainly have)

But again…

The guy and the Democrats get shit done….

Schumer and Reid have taken the lead from Pelosi…

And Reid the old boxer keeps giving good rounds in the Senate…..

Just like his re-election run…..

The Democrats are rolling along fine folks…

No draconian cuts…

And taxing the rich is still being pushed along with dialogue about more cuts….

And will likely do fine with the Debt Ceiling (that HAS to be raised ) fight….

That make sense

I hope the GOP Governors keep messing with everyone…

The Dem’s may lose the Senate…

But they  ARE gonna have gains in the House…

And a newly re-elected President come next November….

For sure….

Al-Jazeera is suddenly in…

Things sometimes change

With the political winds

Don’t they?

“They are a really important media entity, and we have a really great relationship with them,” said Dana Shell Smith, the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for international media engagement, who speaks Arabic and has frequently appeared on the channel. “This administration has empowered those of us who actually do the communicating to be in a close relationship with Al-Jazeera. They understand that the relationship can’t consist of complaining to each other about the differences we have.”

The differences also have shrunk as the big story in the Middle East has shifted from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the democratic movements sweeping the region. In the recent uprisings, U.S. interests tended to line up with Al-Jazeera’s, and President Barack Obama alluded to both the network’s influence and its pro-democracy bent in remarks caught on an open mic during a closed-door fundraiser last week……

The Rep. Peter King Muslim Hearings…..

This Dog is of two minds on Rep. Peter Kings (R-NY) Theatre up on Capital Hill….

While I am a bit alarmed that media tilt to the Hearings might push the branding of the McCarthy era…

I have to say that I applaud the Congressman from down road from me for coming out of the closet on the issue….

Right after 9/11, there was a local Yemeni store worker that point to the 9/11 headlines and smiled in front of me…

I stopped going to that store….

The guy lost all of his regular customers and was replaced in the store by another family member that is a US citizen a has his kids in out local schools….

He does not bring the incident up….

Yet I an aware of several cases where Muslim  parents raised US born children…Only to see them become radicalized and sneak away to join the ’cause’…

If Peter King’s hearings can help the parents who are suffering then that’s good….

If Federal, State and local police can testify that there HAVE been Muslims that come forth to help keep America safe….

Then that IS good…..

There is a problem with American born or naturalized citizens doing harm to their fellow Americans…

Sunlight and knowledge of these issuers are good for ALL  Americans to see and understand….

As american’s are christians, jews and muslims….

We all blend together to form a beautiful somewhat flawed country that is the greatest in the world…

We MUST be vigilant against those theat would do us harm…

But as we the American people have always been..

We must fight our demons to be tolerant and to continue accepting those that are different from us…

But want to BE us….

It is the strength and the lifeblood of this great nation…

Representative Peter King during a hearing on the radicalization of American Muslims in Washington on Thursday.

(Stephan Crowley/NY Times )

Representative Peter T. King, who is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and represents parts of Long Island, said there was “nothing radical or un-American” in the hearings.

“Indeed, Congressional investigation of Muslim American radicalization is the logical response to the repeated and urgent warnings which the Obama administration has been making in recent months,” he said in his opening statement.

Mr. King quoted top Obama administration officials as attesting to the threat of homegrown terrorism, listing a half-dozen American citizens and residents accused of plotting or carrying out violence in the name of Islam since 2009.

But the committee’s top Democrat, Representative Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, said Muslims as a community should not be accused of radicalism or violence. He suggested that such accusations could play into the hands of Al Qaedaby supporting its claim that the United States is hostile to Islam.

“I cannot help but wonder whether this hearing, focused on the Muslim American community, will be used to inspire a new generation of suicide bombers,” Mr. Thompson said. Noting his own roots in Mississippi, he also referred to Mr. King’s Irish heritage; some critics of Mr. King have noted that he was a strong supporter of the Irish Republican Armywhen it carried out terrorist attacks in the 1980s…..

As the rebels recapture ground…One wonders…Will Obama be the President that lost Democracy in the Middle East?…

From the jump…..

On our little poll here the numbers read like this….(they are tiny numbers )

Should Obama do No-Fly Zones and other military action…..

No….45% None….

Yes….18% to evacuate people

No…..Let NATO take the lead

So among the readers of this blog…..

The President of the America IS doing the right thing by NOT doing anything….

But I wonder how this doing nothing is gonna play on the domestic and world stage?

That question may….

May not be important …

I’m sure the big boys polling have come down close to the results here…

But right now the President is taking heat from both US political parties on NOT doing anything to help the opposition in Libya… do anything….

This about the same thing that happens in Iran every few years..

The US hops up the population…

They mound demonstrations…

They get taken out…

Again and again….

This time…

If Gaddafi is able to retake Libya back in a civil war things aren’t going be so nice….

The US and NATO will shown other rulers in the area that they will let them carry their own fight to their population…..

The American push for democracy will ring hallow….

And the bad guys will be happy to ramp up their oil prices and give us the finger….

Is all this worth the abuse…..

I  know sometimes you swallow hard and move on….

Is this one of those times for the President?

But this will be no joke in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and other capital’s…

The US will not fight anymore…

The American’s are tired…

And they want to go home….

Which is of course true…..

A lot of people are mad at James Clapper , the US Director of National Intelligence, because he got it right today when he told the Senate Foreign Relations Panel that if no one comes to help the Libyan rebels….

They will lose their battle with Gaddafi’s forces in the end….

Everyone’s tired….

They want to send the troops home…

The questions are….

Will the World take rest also while we do?

And ….

Will President Obama….Following his Defense Secretary’s advice …In fighting no more…

Be the guy who helped cure  ’Democracy fever’ in the Middle East and North Africa…..

Is President Obama playing Defense when he should be leading the Offense?

Talkandpolitics has been on this for a quite a while about Obama….

The man simply waits on almost every issue until he see’s how the cards fall….

Then he acts…..

This is not new for him…

He did this when he served in the Illinois legislature….

Preferring to abstain from votes in order to not get go on record  with his views or stance…

We now find ourselves in a situation where the Republicans , embolden by the recent Mid-Term results in the House are calling the shots…..

While the Democrats scramble to get their point across…

Now I know Boehner is the Speaker of the House so money bills come from him first…

And I know he’s got a solid majority….

But when was the last time you heard Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi mentioned up on Capital Hill?

Vice President Biden…Who is the lead for the White House Budget talks…Is schudeled to go on the road after next week…

Does he go?

If so….

We know Obama isn’t gonna step in….

So here we are waiting to see WTF is gonna happen….

The President…Who IS a Democrat…

Seems to be playing a GOP song…

Coming out for more budget cuts….

Strangely silent on the Labor battle in Wisconsin after endorsing it…

And doing absolutely nothing while the country fumes over a rise in gas princes that has nothing to do with current supply levels….

I keep defending President  Obama because even after this he’ll somehow find a way to come out on top…

I know he will….

But frankly….

Talkandpolitics does a have a point…

The guy just doesn’t lead…

He just jumps in at the last minute to do a deal most of the time it seems….

That’s who he is…..

As in when he plays ‘hoops’….

A Defensive player……

Who remarkily wins…..

Scott Walker could sink the Republican’s in 2012….…

I said that here in a post ….

And since Keith points out that don’t do enough ‘discussion’ pieces here…

Here’s one….

The Governor of Wisconsin …All by himself …..

Has put the Unionized workers of this country that they have a big bullseye on their back…

His rush to put the government unions out of business in his state started out as a budget thing…

But quickly moved to what the Governor and his GOP friends have smarted about since 2008….

Union support of Democrats….

Walker has been after unions since he was the Milwaukee Country Executive….

Where he fired the union providing security for the counties court system and brought in a non – union contractor…

That decision was recently overturned in court….

From the jump Walker has admitted that he doesn’t like unions…..

Because now he’s in a fight he didn’t think he’d have…

And EVERYBODY is watching….

Mitch Daniel’s the Governor of Indiana did almost the same thing Walker wants to do five years ago….

Without the noise…

So I guess he’s better at talking people’s benefits than Walker…

The only good thing about Daniels is …

Now that Walker has blown the lid off things …..

Daniel has no chance to make it to the White House….

Anyways back to the point here…

The galvanizing of support from the public….

In Wisconsin and around the country is a godsend for the Democrats..

Who watched with horror as the GOP sweep them out of office in the House last November….

Their base is coming alive…..

The question is…

Will they be able to carry the anger along for another 20 or so months into the 2012 elections?
