Merlin on the Washington State’s Senate race…..

Hello Dog!

A new Statewide Survey in the Evergreen State shows that longterm Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) maybe vulnerable this year. Murray is barely over the 50 % Mark at which Incumbents considered to be vulnerable. She also leads 3 3rd Tier Opponents by double digits. However she trails ’04 & ’08 Republican Governor Candidate Dino Rossi (R) by 2 Points.

Rasmussen Survey

Washington Senate 2010

Approve  51 %
Disapprove  48 %

Governor Christine Gregoire (D)

Approve  41 %
Disapprove  57 %

Full Results at Rasmussen Reports.com

Merlin’s Observation:

Murray holding barely over 50 % against unknown Opponents isn’t good. Obama is barely over water in the State & Governor Gregoire with a dismal 41 % JA. The Republicans should play here.

Merlin

From the Dog…..Murray is really cruisin here….

This from Rasmussen…..

‘Certainly the best-known of the Republicans, Rossi attracts 48% of the vote in a match-up with Murray while the incumbent earns 46%. One percent (1%) like another candidate, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

But Rossi, despite encouragement from many Republicans, says so far that he’s not interested in running for the Senate.’

So Rasmussen is polling a GOP person that isn’t a candidate.…….

Merlin on Senator Vitter of Louisiana……

Hello Dog and good morning!

A new Statewide Survey in the Bayou State shows Senator David Vitter (R-LA) expanding his lead over Congressman Charles “Charlie” J. Melancon (D-LA) up to 24 Points. Remember: Last month LA SoS Jay Dardenne (R-LA) announced that he wouldn’t challenge Vitter in a Primary.

Rasmussen Survey

Louisiana Senate 2010

Incumbent Senator David Vitter (R)  57 %
U. S. Rep. Charles “Charlie” Melancon (D)  33 %
Others  3 %
Undecided  7 %

Job Approvals

President Obama

Approve  37 %
Disapprove  63 %

Governor Bobby Jindal (R)

Approve  70 %
Disapprove  28 %

Merlin’s Observation:

Melancon was touted highly by Democrats early this Election Cycle BUT with the Political Climate moving strongly towards Republicans and Obama plummeting in the State I don’t see Melancon making any inroads this November.

Other Louisiana News:

Secretary of State Jay Dardenne (R-LA) who mulled over a bid of his own against Vitter early on announce yesterday that he would be a Candidate for Lieutnant Governor this Fall, the Postion Mitch Landrieu (D-LA) is vacating who was recently elected Mayor of New Orleans. This makes Dardenne a Prime-Time Candidate for the Governor Race 2015 when Jindal is term-limited.

Merlin

The Dog finds the political winds blowing hard this state…so hard the Senator David Vitter a laughing-stock a year ago, is now poised to keep his job……… at this early date and the President’s numbers are  in the basement…..The Poll does mention the public walking away from Vitter’s indiscretions and the fact that McCain beat Obama in the state by over 15% in last presidential election…..

Merlin with the America ‘s Cup Update……

Hi Dog!

Back to Sports again.

Here are the Quotes from both Teams after the 1st Race:
Jimmy Spithill, Skipper, BMW Oracle: “I always thought if we were able to fly a hull we’d be faster upwind, but I was genuinely surprised downwind”

Dirk de Ridder, Wingsail Trimmer, BMW Oracle: “Over probably 9-10 k breeze it’s more efficient without the headsail, and the wing is working at maximum efficiency at that windspeed, and there was no surprise we were better upwind against Alinghi with the wing only….Once we get to over over 10k we’re at our absolute best and probably more wind we’d even be better. So good to see in the lighter wind up the first beat we were actually going quite well — we were very very pleased”

Larry Ellison, Owner, BMW Oracle: “I would have sailed today if they weren’t about to call a race in three-and-a-half knots. If it’s very very light, we’ll sail with minimum crew again.  I had intended to sail today and I intend to sail Sunday but not if the breeze is three knots of breeze.”

Ernesto Bertarelli, Owner, Alinghi: “The wing seems to be quite a weapon.”

Brad Butterworth, Alinghi Skipper: “What do you want me to say, they sailed from behind us to in front of us.”

Jimmy Spithill, Skipper, BMW Oracle, on the pre-start: “I was approaching it pretty aggressively because the wind was quite light — we did a great job on the entry. We were able to get a piece of ‘em and a force a penalty which was good, but then pretty soon after, we’re sort of learning all the time,  we had a hard time sorta stopping the boat.  We ended up rolling forwards and getting overlapped to windward….

“We sorta had a hard time to try and  stay out of irons. We got stuck in irons.  We had an issue with one of the winches, we couldn’t get the sail on ‘em, and obviously we couldn’t get the bow down. So it was a bit frustrating, you know, as we really had him on the back foot there.”

Question: As you came across the line, how did you feel when you started chasing Alinghi down?
Spithill: “Pretty fired up, we pushed the boat harder than I’ve ever pushed it before –- I mean right on the edge…..the boat really took off.”

Merlin on the Texas races…….

Hi Dog

Yes, we’ve another Poll for the Texas Primaries as well as the Senate Special Election (in case Hutchison resigns). Perry has big lead in GOP Primary but well under 50 % he needs to avoid a Run-Off. White leads Democratic Primary.

University of Texas / Texas Tribune Survey

Texas Governor 2010

Republican Primary

Incumbent Governor Rick Perry  45 %
Incumbent Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison  21 %
GOP Tea Party Activist Debra Medina  19 %
Undecided  16 %

Democratic Primary

former Houston Mayor Bill White  50 %
Farouk Shami  11 %
Others  9 %
Undecided  30 %

General Election

Incumbent Governor Rick Perry (R)  44 %
former Houston Mayor Bill White (D)  35 %
Others  8 %
Undecided  12 %

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R)  43 %
former Houston Mayor Bill White (D)  34 %
Others  9 %
Undecided  14 %

former Houston Mayor Bill White (D)  36 %
GOP Tea Party Activist Debra Medina (R)  36 %
Others  8 %
Undecided  21 %

Incumbent Governor Rick Perry (R)  48 %
Farouk Shami (D)  25 %
Others  15 %
Undecided  12 %

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R)  49 %
Farouk Shami (D)  23 %
Others  15 %
Undecided  14 %

GOP Tea Party Activist Debra Medina (R)  40 %
Farouk Shami (D)  24 %
Others  14 %
Undecided  22 %

Texas Senate Special Election (in case Hutchison resigns)

John Sharp (D)  29 %
David Drewhurst (R)  15 %
Michael Williams (R)  3 %
Elizabeth Ames Jones (R)  2 %
Florence Shapiro (R)  2 %
Roger Williams (R)  1 %
Craig James (R)  1 %
Undecided  47 %

Merlin’s Observation:

There are still an awful lot of Undecided in the Republican Primary so Perry could at this Point pull this out without a Run-Off. As for the Special Election Texas Law requires all Candidates to run on a single Ballot and the two Top Vote getters will then advance to a Run-Off Election. Remember this: Hutchison won a Special Election in 1993 after Incumbent Democratic Senator LLoyd Bentsen was selected as Treasury Sec. by then President Bill Clinton (D).

Merlin on North Dakota……..

Hello Dog!

After the Sports Excitement it’s now back to Politics.

A new Statewide Suvey in North Dakota finds Governor John Hoeven (R) in cruise control of capturing the States Open Senate Seat. Republicans also have a suprisingly decent Shot to knock out longterm U. S. Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-ND).

Rasmussen Survey...link..Link……

North Dakota Senate 2010

Incumbent Governor John Hoeven (R)  71 %
State Senator Tracy Potter (D)  17 %
Others  4 %
Undecided  8 %

Incumbent Governor John Hoeven (R)  65 %
former Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp (D)  29 %
Others  1 %
Undecided  5 %

North Dakota House At-Large 2010

State Rep. & Businessman Rick Berg (R)  46 %
Incumbent U. S. Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D)  40 %
Others  3 %
Undecided  11 %

Incumbent U. S. Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D)  45 %
Public Service Commissioner Kevin Cramer (R)  44 %
Others  3 %
Undecided  7 %

Incumbent U. S. Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D)  47 %
Paul Schaffner (R)  38 %
Others  5 %
Undecided  10 %

Job Appovals

President Obama

Approve  39 %
Disapprove  58 %

Governor John Hoeven (R)

Approve  85 %
Disapprove  12 %

Merlin’s Observation:

Hoeven’s lead and Approvals are no surprise. He has similar Approvals Q-Pac found in Connecticut for Blumenthal in January.
The BIG, BIG surprise is the House Race. It looks like Pomeroy is in heavy danger too. Cramer (who ran against Pomeroy 2 times before) was never this close early in an Election Year. this bodes well for Republicans. State Representative Rick Berg is even leading the longterm Incumbent by 6 Points. This could be an Earthquake in North Dakota next year.

Merlin

Wow!…look at those Obama numbers……Not too many friendly’s in that state……..
