commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

Daily Manila……Sorry Charlie!

This is a reason we should be paying these people a least $250,000.00 a year.

Probably $500,000.00.

Plus benefits.

So when one goes astray

they get kicked out immediately

Because if Star Kist only accepts the best cuts of tuna (oil packed or water?)

Why shouldn’t we.

PS: Genial guy but being clever got the best of him.

Rep. Sander Levin gets Ways and Means in the House for now…….

Rep. Sander Levin was named chairman of the powerful tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, succeeding Charles Rangel, who stepped aside Wednesday.

Mr. Levin (D., Mich.) said Thursday he will take control of the panel after Rep. Pete Stark (D., Calif.) declined the chairman’s gavel. Mr. Stark was next in line for the post according to House seniority rules.

In a statement, Mr. Stark said he is stepping aside because he wants to retain the chairmanship of the health subcommittee on Ways and Means. “We are at the cusp of achieving health-care reform and we must remain focused on moving forward,” he said.

Mr. Levin, 78 years old, said he will convene a meeting of the House Ways and Means panel Tuesday to discuss future plans for the committee. “I’ll be acting chairman. All the subjects before the committee will be on the table,” Mr. Levin told reporters after a closed-door meeting of Ways and Means Democrats Thursday.

The Ways and Means panel, one of the most influential in Congress, oversees taxes as well as trade and Social Security, and it has substantial jurisdiction over federal health programs.

The announcement capped a tumultuous 24-hour period of closed-door haggling over the chairman’s gavel by Democrats following the temporary leave of its former chairman, Mr. Rangel (D., N.Y.).

Initially, some House Ways and Means lawmakers said Mr. Stark was poised to lead the panel. But questions about Mr. Stark’s health and his sometimes contentious relations with lawmakers from both parties buoyed Mr. Levin in his bid to claim the top spot on the committee.

Officially, Mr. Levin will serve as acting chairman until the House ethics committee delivers findings on allegations of misconduct in Mr. Rangel’s tax and financial dealings.

Mr. Rangel said he was relinquishing the post temporarily. But Mr. Rangel is given very little chance of returning to the Ways and Means chairmanship, because he has lost support from numerous House Democrats.

Mr. Levin represents an auto industry district outside Detroit, is the Democrats’ foremost expert on trade issues and a key player on tax legislation.

Mr. Levin was first elected in 1982 and is in his 14th term. He is the older brother of Sen. Carl Levin (D., Mich.).

We’ll see how it plays with Rangel……

Update: Rangel will temporarily give up the Chair of Ways and Means…….

Rep. Charles Rangel announced Wednesday morning he will temporarily give up his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee in wake of a House Ethics Committee inquiry into corporate funded trips to the Caribbean.

In brief remarks before cameras in a House press gallery, Rangel said he had sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi “asking her to grant me a leave of absence” until the ethics committee completes its investigation. Rangel in theory left the door open to reclaiming his gavel if he is cleared by the ethics panel at a later date.

With Rangel stepping aside, it’s not clear who will take the chairmanship, and Democrats have not decided who will oversee the powerful Ways and Means Committee. Rangel declined to answer any questions about his departure or his replacement.

He would only say that the situation “is bringing so much attention to the press and in order to avoid my colleagues having to defend me during their elections.”

Wearing a bowtie and flashing his trademark smile at times, Rangel told reporters that answering reporters’ questions would “distract” him from working on health-care overhaul legislation and a the jobs bill.

Rangel looked to be exiting the press conference, but suddenly stopped and added, “From the very, very beginning I offered this to Speaker Pelosi.”

The Rangel announcement Wednesday morning culminated 24 hours of intrigue inside the Capitol.

With his ethics problems becoming an albatross around the necks of his party’s most politically vulnerable members, the venerable New York Democrat was pushed deep into a corner Tuesday night – meeting with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a covey of aides in her ceremonial office in the southeast corner of the Capitol.

He insisted he that he is still chairman of the powerful tax-writing committee as he left Pelosi’s office. But after a night of reflection, he is ready to relinquish power — at least temporarily.

Rep. Rangel found guilty of breaking House ethics rules……

APHouse Ways and Means Chairman Rep. Charlie Rangel

Charles Rangel, 79, NY – D, The powerful Chairman of the House Ways and Means committee was found guilty by fellow House members from the Ethics Committee on trips he took in 2007 and 2008…..He still is under investigation for irregularities in tax manners by the House…..

Rangel who is known to be forgetful by House members has served for 34 years in Congress…..as is known as fine dresser and the annual sponsor of bring back the draft……

The Dog fully expects that the New York Democrat will be able to keep his seat after the rulings come out on the continuing inquiry….

Here’s the piece ……….

Rep. Charles Rangel, the most powerful tax-writing lawmaker in Congress and a 34-year veteran of Capitol Hill, knowingly accepted Caribbean trips from a corporation in violation of House rules, the House Ethics Committee ruled Thursday, The Associated Press has learned.

At least four other members of the Congressional Black Caucus who were also on the 2007 and 2008 trips were exonerated by the panel, according to a congressional source familiar with the findings.

Rangel said he was being “admonished” by the House Ethics Committee amid reports he violated ethics rules by accepting corporate-funded trips to the Caribbean.

The New York Democrat told political website Politico the committee claimed at least two members of his staff knew about the corporate funding for the trips – and that Rangel himself should have known.

The finding is certain to jeopardize Rangel’s chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee. The tax-writing committee will take a lead as Congress determines the fate of former President George W. Bush’s expiring tax cuts.

Rengel’s ethics troubles also present an election-year dilemma for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who led a Democratic takeover of the House in 2006 on a campaign promise to end a “culture of corruption” in the GOP-led Congress.

The 79-year-old Rengel, D-N.Y., has been in the House 30 years. It was unclear whether the findings would affect whether he seeks re-election
