The Wisconsin state Assembly has passed Gov. Scott Walker’s bill to roll back the rights of public employee unions, capping off a month of protest and controversy that has gripped the state. The bill now heads to Walker for his signature.
The final vote count was 53-42. It followed Wednesday night’s passage in the Senate, and the surprise maneuver that Republicans had undertaken to move ahead on the anti-union provisions on their own. The GOP prepared a new bill that stripped out clearly fiscal elements, allowing them to move ahead without need for a three-fifths quorum required to vote on budget bills — though Democrats have argued that the bill still contains fiscal elements, and they could potentially challenge it on that basis.
In Thursday’s Assembly session — which was delayed due to a security lockdown of the Capitol — the Democrats, clad in specially printed orange T-shirts that declared their labor solidarity, delivered many speeches and lodged many motions, in part to register their protest and in part to delay the vote. By contrast, only a few Republicans spoke, speaking of their concerns about maintaining the state’s finances, making hard choices and avoiding layoffs by relieving the financial pressures on local governments.
A new series of battles in the state now seems all but assured. Democrats have pledged to recall the Republican members of the state Senate who are eligible, under the state law requiring at least one year of a term to be completed, and then to go after Walker next year.

Yep….
I said that here in a post ….
And since Keith points out that don’t do enough ‘discussion’ pieces here…
Here’s one….
The Governor of Wisconsin …All by himself …..
Has put the Unionized workers of this country that they have a big bullseye on their back…
His rush to put the government unions out of business in his state started out as a budget thing…
But quickly moved to what the Governor and his GOP friends have smarted about since 2008….
Union support of Democrats….
Walker has been after unions since he was the Milwaukee Country Executive….
Where he fired the union providing security for the counties court system and brought in a non – union contractor…
That decision was recently overturned in court….
From the jump Walker has admitted that he doesn’t like unions…..
Good…
Because now he’s in a fight he didn’t think he’d have…
And EVERYBODY is watching….
Mitch Daniel’s the Governor of Indiana did almost the same thing Walker wants to do five years ago….
Without the noise…
So I guess he’s better at talking people’s benefits than Walker…
The only good thing about Daniels is …
Now that Walker has blown the lid off things …..
Daniel has no chance to make it to the White House….
Anyways back to the point here…
The galvanizing of support from the public….
In Wisconsin and around the country is a godsend for the Democrats..
Who watched with horror as the GOP sweep them out of office in the House last November….
Their base is coming alive…..
The question is…
Will they be able to carry the anger along for another 20 or so months into the 2012 elections?

USA Today:
The public strongly opposes laws taking away the collective bargaining power of public employee unions as a way to ease state financial troubles, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll.
The poll found that 61% would oppose a law in their state similar to one being considered in Wisconsin, compared with 33% who would favor such a law.
So Scott Walker’s plan isn’t just unpopular with the workers whose unions he’s trying to bust, it’s also deeply unpopular with the public at large. Busting up unions, destroying workers’ right to organize is not just a bad idea—it’s a bad idea that nobody wants.
The poll also found that 53% oppose reducing pay or benefits from government workers and that while 47% favored cuts in government programs, 48% opposed such cuts…….
