In a compliment to Consumer’s Union……

Toyota has agreed that its Lexus460 is prone to stability control problems that could turn the vehicle over….

Toyota must be commented on two fronts …which shows that they have learned from the Pruis recall…

First …within 12 hours of CU’s warning they stopped selling the vehicle….

Second…after testing they admitted they had a problem….and will promptly fix it….

This is the way the system is supposed to work….

Cars are complex machines that are compromises better cost, safety, style and manufacturing….

S*#t happens….

We all expect the builder of the vehicle to fix any problems and move on……

Toyota says its engineers in Japan have duplicated the same errant slide that prompted Consumer Reports to issue a rare “don’t buy” warning on the 2010 Lexus GX 460, and Toyota agrees the vehicle has a safety problem.

“They duplicated Consumer Reports’ results on the GX 460 and they are currently evaluating potential remedies, but at this point there is no details of what the remedy is,” said Bill Kwong, a Lexus spokesman.

On Tuesday, Consumer Reports announced what it considered a serious safety problem.

“When pushed to its limits on our track’s handling course,” the magazine wrote on its Web site, “the rear of the GX we bought slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control.”

On every other S.U.V. tested the same way –- including models from Lexus and Toyota –- the electronic stability control quickly caught the slide, the magazine said.

About 12 hours after the magazine publicized the problem, Lexus told its dealers to stop selling the GX 460 and launched an investigation. On Thursday, Toyota said it was conducting safety inspections of all its S.U.V. models.

Don't buy a Lexus GX460……….

Before I recently leased a new Toyota Highlander SUV……the first place I went to was Consumers Reports to see how  the vehicle tested out by the Non- Profit agency that tests everything……

Despite all the hullabaloo about Toyota…..

CU rated the Highlander as the best buy better the Honda Explorer, Chevy Traverse,  and Hunyadi SUV…..

So I got the Toyota which also has the best mileage of any of those vehicles…….

Now I’m having lunch with my wife….and she says…’did you see that?…don’t buy that Lexus SUV!’

So of course I go look and here’s the piece…….

Wow!….CU really issues a ‘don’t buy’ notice…….

They ain’t gonna sell too many GX460’s till they fix those trucks……

Consumers should not buy the 2010 Lexus GX 460 sport utility vehicle because of a handling problem that could lead to a rollover and possibly “serious injury or death,” according to Consumer Reports magazine.

A “don’t buy” warning is rare for the magazine, but there was no doubt it was necessary, said David Champion, the senior director of the Consumer Reports auto test division. The litmus test was whether the testers would want their families in the vehicle. The answer was no, he said, so “I wouldn’t want anybody else in it.”

The handling problem arises if the driver takes his foot off the gas pedal while driving quickly through a sharp turn. That causes the rear end of the vehicle to slide toward the outside of the turn, a condition known as “trailing-throttle” or “lift-throttle oversteer.” On dozens of other S.U.V.’s tested by the magazine, the vehicles’ electronic stability control system detected and quickly stopped the slide. But the stability control didn’t stop the GX 460 until it was almost sideways, Mr. Champion said.

“This is the first time we have seen it in an S.U.V. with E.S.C.” he said, referring to electronic stability control. Consumer Reports said it was “rare” for the magazine to “judge a vehicle’s performance not acceptable.” The last instance was with the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Limited in 2001.

Lexus issued a statement saying that the automaker was “puzzled” by the magazine’s results since it conducts its own tests, and safety is a top priority.
