Secretary of the Army won’t get rid of Gay solider’s talking to him ‘off the record’……

In a acknowledgement that taking action against gay solider’s talking to him ‘off the record’ would chill the air US Army Secretary John McHugh has made it clear that off the record means that just that….off the record….and that he will not apply the ‘Don’t ask……Don’t Tell’ rules to the gay soldiers who speak to him frankly…….

Under the current law, known as “Don’t ask, don’t tell,” service members who declare that they are gay would have to be discharged, but McHugh indicated he would not pursue any discharges against soldiers who make those statements in private conversations with him.

“I have had men and women in uniform approach me and declare that they were gay and give me their opinion,” McHugh told reporters at a defense writers breakfast. “I don’t consider, under the current way forward, that an open and honest discussion that is required in the secretary’s directive is an outing.”

President Barack Obama wants to see the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” law scrapped, and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has tasked military service leaders with assessing the force’s position on implementing a repeal of the Clinton-era law.

Update……

McHugh must have got beatup a little…..He isses this statement a day later…..

“With regard to the three soldiers who shared their views and thoughts with me on ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,’ I might better have counseled them that statements about their sexual orientation could not be treated as confidential and could result in their separation under the law,” McHugh said.

But will stick to original statement not to go after those who spoke to him off the record…….

Despite the need to clarify those comments, McHugh indicated that no action will be taken against those soldiers who told him that they were gay.

“Because of the informal and random manner in which these engagements occurred, I am unable to identify these soldiers and I am not in a position to formally pursue the matter,” McHugh said.

Good Man!….

The Pentagon bumps review of ‘Don’t Ask…Don’t Tell’ cases up to senior staff……

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said the military will no longer open investigations into the sexual orientation of service members based on anonymous complaints, will restrict testimony from third parties and will require high-ranking officers to review all cases.

The changes will take effect immediately.

The Pentagon is moving ahead on the assumption that Congress will overturn the ban on gays serving openly, but when or if that will happen remains uncertain. Republican opposition to a change is strong, and some influential Democrats — including Rep. Ike Skelton (Mo.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee — agree.

The Dog feels that the White House (the force behind this action ) is smart to do this in small pieces and not in one grand stroke….letting the move filter down thru the ranks and before making the eventual ban of gays in the military expire….which will have to come from the Congress….

The discarding on the ban will not make the actions against gays stop…but at least they will have to not have the services detaching them…..letting the United States military catch up with other military’s, police department’s  and government agencies in accepting there are gays quietly serving with honor in their ranks…..

American’s are all right with abandoning “Don’t Ask…Don’t Tell”…is the Military?

This from PolitcalWire…..

Americans Back Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

A new Quinnipiac poll finds that Americans by a 57% to 36% margin think homosexuals should be able to openly serve in the U.S. military.
Voters also say by a 66% to 31% margin that the current policy of not allowing openly gay men and women to serve is discrimination.

Obama on Don’t Ask ….Don’t Tell…..Don’t wait people…it’s gonna be a while…..

In order to get elected you’ve got to promise different groups of people different things……President Obama is no different on this…He’s a politician…….

The media and gay americans have been waiting for the President to for-fill his pledge to abolish the gay policy of the Defense Department…Don\’t ask..Don\’t tell……mindful of the fact that last two term democratic president got into a huge fight with military at the start of his first term, on the  issue…..and that he never had the things the same with the military…President Obama isn’t in any hurry to make the same mistake……so….he’s gonna continue to say he\’s gonna get rid of the policy…but with a whole lot of things going on with the military in the Middle East and his reliance on the troops…..one could understand that DADT is something he might not want to deal with………
