More on Dan Coats……..

Former Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) leaves the White House in this October 2005 file photo.

The recently-announced Senate candidacy of Dan Coats, a prospect warmly embraced by national Republicans, is receiving a decidedly mixed reception back home where the former senator’s absence from Indiana has been noted.

From the moment word spread that Coats was planning a run against Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, surprised numerous state Republican activists and local leaders greeted the news with something short of enthusiasm.

When Indiana Republican National Committeeman James Bopp, a prominent Coats supporter, sent a late-night e-mail to a string of party officials linking to a news story detailing Coats’s interest in the race, state committee member Barbara Knochel wrote back: “Please excuse my naivete but why would Coats, who retired once, come back? What am I missing here?”

For some state and local Republicans, there is frustration caused by the perception that the Washington GOP establishment – particularly the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which helped to woo Coats and has played an active and public role in promoting and defending his candidacy– is intruding in Indiana politics. And the populist conservative grassroots in the tea party movement feels it most acutely.

One day after Coats announced his interest in the race, a Huntington, Indiana, Tea Party group circulated an e-mail with the subject line, “NO to RNC/Coats for force feeding us this crap sandwich,” while Emery McClendon, a Tea Party organizer, has distributed an e-mail to activists declaring that the push for a Coats candidacy “is the Republican Party’s way of slapping we the people in the face…”

Merlin on Indiana Senate Race and the entry of Dan Coats…..

Hello Dog!

This surely will make you happy. A new Statewide Survey in the Hoosier State shows Incumbent Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN) has BIG leads over 2 potential Republican Opponents.

Research 2000 / DailyKos Survey

Indiana Senate 2010

Incumbent Senator Evan Bayh (D)  55 %
former Senator Daniel Ray Coats (R)  35 %
Undecided  10 %

Incumbent Senator Evan Bayh (D)  53 %
former U. S. Rep. John N. Hostettler (R)  37 %
Undecided  10 %

Favorables

President Obama

Favorable  46 %
Unfavorable  49 %

Governor Mitch Daniels (R)

Favorable  56 %
Unfavorable  34 %

Senator Richard Lugar (R)

Favorable  64 %
Unfavorable  29 %

Senator Evan Bayh (D)

Favorable  61 %
Unfavorable  33 %

The Full Poll can be seen here:  http://www.dailykos.com/statepoll/2010/2/10/IN/443

Merlin’s Observation:

This Poll is highly, highly dubious to me especially because Research 2000 claims Bayh has a 40-Point lead!?!? with Independent Voters. That’s simply not true, it can’t be. Every other National or Statewide Poll is showing Indies moving away from Democrats.

There is one highly respected Pollster who hopefully starts polling this Race very shortly: The Iowa Selzer & Co. Polling Company. They nailed the 2008 Presidential Contest right on the notch for Obama.

Merlin

First of all look at Bayh’s favorables…….

The Dog isn’t happy for the Democrats in this race…The Dog has simply said from the start that Dan Coats is not a good choice to run against Evan Bayh…..other polls will confirm this….Coats has not been in politics for a decade..he has led a good life that makes problems for someone who re-enters politics…. which has an unrealistic  expectation for people to live up to……

Merlin and the Dog on Dan Coats……and the Indiana Senate race….

Hello Dog!

I usually don’t take swipes at the Dog whom I’m calling a good Political Friend.

Here I’m going to make an Exception:

The Dog quoting left Bloggers like MyDD and KOS pulled EVERYTHING out this past week to discourage former IN Senator Daniel “Dan” Ray Coats (R-IN) from challenging Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN).

Let me say this straight to you: YOU FAILED ON THIS!

Coats this morning again confirmed to an Indiana Radio Station that he’ll run against Bayh.

We’re coming after you Democrats. There will be a forcefully Response once Coats has officially enter which will likely be next week after the filling Deadline.

Merlin

The Dog still believes that Dan Coats is a retread……The Dog believed that before MyDD or DailyKos ‘went to town’ on Coats…..

Here’s a piece on Coat’s announcement from PolitcalWire…..…..

Taking Out Dan Coats

Politico looks at the “withering, no-holds-barred assault” on former Sen. Dan Coats (R-IN), who has indicated he wants to challenge Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) for his old Senate seat.

“The ferocious barrage — a coördinated effort unleashed by a small core of senior Democratic strategists in Washington, top Bayh political hands, and Indiana Democratic Party officials — has partisans on both sides of the aisle wondering not whether Coats has been bruised by the punches, but whether he will be able to pick himself off the canvas.”

In an interview on WOWO-AM radio this morning, Coats confirmed he will run against Bayh.

Note:…..The Dog and Merlin are good buddies who love to break each others chops…and will continue to do so……

More again…. on Dan Coats……..

This guy is the gift that keeps giving……He just needs to drop out already……

This from BlueIndiana, @ Mydd.Com……

If there was any doubt that Dan Coats had cut all ties with his “home” state, this damning footage from a North Carolina event in September of 2008 makes it clear that he had no use for Hoosiers until he thought he might be able to win a senate seat.

Check this from YouTube…….

Wow. For what it’s worth, even conservatives in the state have been unimpressed with the Carpetbagging Coats experience. In fact, even the crazy tea-baggers are fed up with the charade.

These insiders are making a major mistake if they feel that the grassroots patriots, who want to see Mr. Bayh head into retirement this year, will accept another DC insider, who spent years as a lobbyist, being dragged into the race. The GOP insiders are making a major mistake if they believe that a candidate who has not lived in our state for the past 10 years – is who the grassroots base will support. The perception that Mr. Coats is being chosen by DC insiders is alienating him from the very base of grassroots support that he will need to win the primary and the general election.

And this is coming from a guy who advocates armed resistance to the federal government.

Merlin…..The Republican’s need to leave Evan Bayh alone….They have no one to mount a credible race against him…..

More on Dan Coats…….

Democrats have been hitting former Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) for his domestic lobbying, but the biggest attacks on his lobbying past might stem from his foreign work.

Coats registered as a lobbyist for a foreign interest while he worked at Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand in 2000 and 2001. According to lobbying disclosure documents, he contacted members of Congress trying to get them to invite the Indian prime minister to a joint session of Congress.

Coats only personally lobbied for India, according to the documents, but around the same time his firm also did foreign lobbying for several other countries, including the governments of Yemen, the United Arab Emirates and Taiwan.

Yemen isn’t exactly a country you want your name tied to right now, and the lobbying documentation provides Democrats with a ready-made attack ad to use against Coats.

Melanie Sloan of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) said the foreign lobbying brings things to a whole new level for Coats.

“It’s one thing to be a lobbyist; it’s another to be lobbying for Yemen,” she said. “He’ll have that hung around his neck day in and day out.

“I think it’s huge, and it’s going to be really hard to overcome.”

A spokesman for Coats did not respond to a request for comment.

This story from The Hill……….

This guy appears to be done for… right out of the gate…..don’t surprised if he pulls his name…..

Dan Coats might not make it……

The Dog warned Merlin about Republicans drag up all GOP politicians to run again…..

The Dog see’s Dan Coats as someone who will is likely to ultimately drop out of the running for the Indiana Senate seat…

…..We’ll see…

But stuff like this below is gonna make it hard for Coats to run effectively…….

From PolitcalWire…..

Coats Tied to Chavez-Connected Oil Company

Former Sen. Dan Coats (R-IN), who wants to challenge Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) for his old Senate seat, “lobbied for a Texas-based oil and gas company that partnered with Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez,” Politico reports.

The Hotline notes Coats has also “spent the past several years advocating on behalf of pharmaceutical companies, major health care firms and big corporations.”

A little more about Dan Coats…. who's running agianst Sen. Evan Bayh in Indiana……….

From  desmoinesdem over @Mydd.Com…….

Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana dodged a bullet recently when Representative Mike Pence decided against challenging him, but today former U.S. Senator Dan Coats, who retired in 1998, will announce plans to run for this seat. Chris Cillizza handicaps the race:

While Coats give Republicans a very credible challenger to Bayh, the Democratic Senator is no slouch. Bayh’s obvious strength is his financial prowess as he ended 2009 with $13 million in the bank and his sterling electoral record that includes two terms as governor and two terms in the Senate.Bayh’s biggest potential weakness is the fact that he hasn’t run a truly competitive race in decades and may not have the fire in the belly to do so now given that he weighed retirement earlier in this cycle.

Coats will also have to answer a few basic questions. He does not currently live in the state (GOP sources say he and his wife had long planned to move back), is a federally registered lobbyist and, for someone who left office expressing a disdain for fundraising, will have to do lots of it to get competitive with Bayh.

Cillizza doesn’t mention a few other problems for Coats, like how he minimized the threat from Al-Qaeda. When President Bill Clinton ordered air strikes in Afghanistan and Sudan in 1998, Coats said, “The president has been consumed with matters regarding his personal life. It raises questions about whether or not he had the time to devote to this issue, or give the kind of judgment that needed to be given to this issue to call for military action.”

Jonathan Singer also noted on his Twitter feed that Coats was in charge of getting the unqualified Harriet Myers confirmed for the U.S. Supreme Court. That effort didn’t go well, and President George W. Bush ended up withdrawing Myers’ nomination (which is how we got Samuel Alito).

The Dog pointed out the Meirs connection on 2/1/10……(Mydd spelled it wrong it’s Meirs…not Myers )

From Merlin on Coats running in Indiana……..

Hello Dog!

This really came to me as a welcomed surprise late last night. Senate Republicans finally got their Recruit to Democrat Evan Bayh in Indiana. Former Senator Daniel Ray Coats will challenge him sources in the Hoosier State as well as in Washington telling Merlin.

Coats was the best Senate Republicans had left after Mike Pence & Todd Rokita declined a bid.

While Coats isn’t the best Candidate (I’d rather would have liked Pence, Rokita or Daniels to run) he isn’t a lightweight either. The Economy as well as Health Care have taken their toll on Bayh. His Approvals are holding barely over 50 % and in a strong GOP year like 2010 there might be a change of an upset this Fall.

Even before Coats will announce the well known Cook Political Report has moved the Indiana Senate Race from “Solid Democrat” into “Lean Democrat”

http//cookpolitical.com/senate

NRSC Chair John Cornyn (R-TX) who was on the Morning Shows is sounding pretty confident of other Top Recruits will enter, He said Candidates who previously declined a bid sounding pretty interested.

If you want me to make a bet I think either Tommy Thompson (R-WI) or George Pataki (R-NY) will be next.
