Eleven days after the botched plot to bomb Times Square, the Obama administration on Wednesday slashed some $53 million from the city’s terror-fighting budget.

“For the administration to announce these cuts two weeks after the attempted Times Square bombing shows they just don’t get it and are not doing right by New York City,” fumed Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

To top it off, the news comes as President Obama comes to town today to tap the city’s deep pockets for the Democratic Party.

“The President seems more interested in raising money for political campaigns than providing New York the money it needs to defend itself against Islamic terrorism,” said Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.), the top Republican on the Homeland Security Committee.

The cuts, to be announced Thursday, target the annual allocations for transit security and port security, legislators said.

The New York City area will get $111million for transit security in the final 2010 budget – a 27% chop from last year’s $153 million. The port security program is getting chopped from $45 million to $33.8million – a cut of 25%.

Note….

Last year, Schumer and King succeeded in fighting to restore $20 million for the nuke detectors along highways, toll plazas, bridges, tunnels and waterways.

The administration also decided to redeploy the Coast Guard’s Maritime Safety and Security Team in New York to Boston Harbor.

NW 235 bomber may take out DHS head Napolitano as collateral damage…

It seems that the media is going after the Homeland Security Head Janet Napolitano in its frenzied response to the NW235 incident…Her first reaction to the incident was to say the system worked…a mistake any crisis manager knows not to do….you always give we’ll wait and see answers…because things always change in these situations…

But to go after her job…is utterly ridiculous…..

Sure they didn’t connect the dots…but the ball was dropped by everyone else…..NOT Homeland Security…..

The State Department approved the VISA, the subject was on a watch list, the subject was screened outside the United States!

Give us a break …and calm down people!….

There is no way you can completed stop this stuff from happening…..The security people need to be their toes…..But American security people were not involved in this except for the U.S. State Department …….

Arrests at the United States southern Border drop by 23%…drug seizures rise…….

Because of stronger enforcement, and the weaker economy, lessening the need for labor …the Homeland Security Department reports that border apprehensions have dropped to 556,041 from 723,825 in the last 12 months from Sept 30th……the US Border Patrol has expanded it agents from roughly 11,000 to 20,000, making it the second largest uniformed law enforcement agency in the U.S. behind the New York City Police Department ( 31,000 )…..

Drug seizures have increased though…..with port finds up 53% on cocaine, 13% on marijuana…on land the marijuana finds are up 37% and cocaine is up 15% from last year…..

People try to ship drugs over and under water, in the air and in vehicles and by foot…..

Does the Secret Service have too much on it’s plate?

Back in September I did a book review on the Ron Kessler book about the United States Secret Service…….in reading the book it became apparent to me that the Service was in a bad place……taken from Treasury, where it was born and was the top dog…it has been relegated to the bottom of the food chain at the Homeland Security Department a huge agency…..now the agency has another problem……..it was formed last century as agency to protect the nation’s currency and grew to take on enforcing federal laws and statues against other financial crimes, which fit it’s being home in the Treasury Department.   But its move to Homeland has accompanied its huge growth in its dignitary protection function which has begun to diminish it investigative mission…….

There are now questions about what the agency should be doing as its mission and how it should be organized.…..The Service like any agency always is fighting a rear guard action to protect its turf….In the Kessler book it is mentioned that the Service has been in skirmishes with the FBI over enforcement (every federal agencies has)….while they where in Treasury there really was no leg for the FBI to stand on…the Service was Treasury , but with the movement out of that Department they have become protection oriented.

After a study of the problem by the Congressional Research Service there is a discussion in Congress and the agency what should be done…..Should the agency send some of staff and functions back to Treasury?…Should the agency do just protection?  Giving the FBI its investigate responsibilities?

The picture in the future is uncertain….. Since Congress has just given the agency the additional task of monitoring mortgage fraud, and added more money for the agency for protective functions in the future…….
