Merlin on the Rep. Vernon Ehlers retirement…..

Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-MI 3) apparently will retire.

From The Atlantic……

It’s been a year of notable Democratic retirements, but Rep. Vernon Ehlers, the nine-term Republican from Grand Rapids, Michigan, will call it quits at the end of 2010, Hotline OnCall’s Tim Sahd and Reid Wilson report.

It’s the 17th open seat Republicans will have to defend in 2010 (vs. 11 open seats for Democrats), and Sahd and Wilson note that it could be an opportunity for Democrats under the right circumstances, though the race was not generally seen among the nation’s more competitive before news of Ehlers’s retirement. John McCain defeated President Obama in Michigan’s third district by a slim 49% to 49% in 2008, but the McCain camp pulled out of Michigan early. Ehlers won reelection with 61% of the vote in 2008.

The Cook Political Report rates the district as R+6 on its Partisan Voter Index–not the strongest of Republican strongholds, but certainly an edge or the incumbent party–and, with Ehlers in the race, rated it as solidly Republican. State Rep. Justin Amash (R) had announced a primary challenge to Ehlers, Sahd and Wilson note.

Here’s the statement from Ehlers Office…..

Official Statement from Ehlers Congressional Office:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Congressman Vernon J. Ehlers announced today that, after serving the people of Michigan’s Third Congressional District for eight full terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, he will leave at the end of his current term. He issued the following statement:

“I have had the honor and privilege of serving the people of West Michigan in Congress for the past 16 years, and I am grateful and humbled to have been able to do so. My time in Congress has been incredibly challenging and rewarding, and I appreciate this opportunity greatly.

“While I regret leaving when so much more needs to be done, I know it is time for me to step down. I am in good health, but I recognize that I should complete this chapter of my life. I look forward to spending more time with my wife and my family in Grand Rapids.

“Many serious issues still need diligent attention from Congress, and I intend to participate vigorously in my work for the remainder of this year. I am incredibly grateful to have spent the time I did effecting positive change for our country, and, most of all, serving people of West Michigan, to the very best of my ability.”

Hold on folks!……the GOP is defending more seats in the House than the Democrats!…..

Daniel here at the PoliticalDog has been on my case about the Democrats losing the House…...Well…. hold On!…it seems that the Republicans are going to have to defend more seats than the Democrats!……Take that!

This from the PoliticalWire and the Washington Post’s ‘The Fix’……

GOP Retirements Mount in the House

With news that Rep. Henry Brown (R-SC) will not seek re-election, we noted Republicans now have 14 open House seats to defend this year while Democrats have just 10 open seats so far.

The Fix: “While much of the focus for the last month (or so) has been on Democrats’ retirement problems — set off by a quartet of announcements in swing and Republican-leaning districts over the last month — a broad look at the open seat playing field suggests more parity in terms of the two parties’ opportunities and vulnerabilities than conventional wisdom suggests.”

Oops!

The House authorizes $100 million on the Lockheed/Augusta VH-71A Marine One Helo!…..

In the just passed House appropriations bill for the Defense Department…. they left $125 million in for the Marine One program…..

But dig this!????

$100 million is for the Lockheed Martin/AugutaWestland company to restart work on finishing up bringing the nine VH-71A is the government (Navy/Marines) owns to specifications required…and $25 million to shut the program down????

He, he, he…if Gates is so insistent on rebidding the Presidents helicopter then go ahead…with the money the House added…Lockheed can re-bid the VH-71A in the competition and win since their chopper won’t cost the government a cent (and will be cheaper than any thing it’s only competitor Sikorsky would offer)…..and they can be delivered yesterday……

……all they would need to do is to built nine more and the contract would be done…..Isn’t that better than waiting for another ten years and 10 billion for Sikorsky to make something ?

Note:….This is a small win for New York State  (Owego) jobs and its upstate House member Maurice Hinchey (D-NY)….

Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA) will not run next fall….another one bites the dust…

Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA), voted against the Healthcare bill in the House…..Baird was popular…and easily won re-election the last time he ran for the seat…..but his vote against the Healthcare bill hurt him dearly in his district…..who ever runs as the Democrat in the fall will probably be running against Rep. Jaime Herrera (R)…

Note:….In total right now…..9 Democrats have annouced they will not run for their seats next fall, and 12 Republcans have done the same…..

The House is currently only investigating black memebers…….

That is factually correct according to a story in Politico today….while there are several white memebers being looked at…there are currently seven black memebers, no white memebers, being actiely investigated…..

Charlie Rangel  (D-NY)

Jesse Jackson Jr (D-IL)

Carol Kilipatrick    (D-Mich)

Maxine Waters  (D-CA)

Laura Richardson  (D-CA)

Donald Payne   (D-NJ)

Donna Christensen   (D-VI)

It is interesting that in a body with over 400 members only black person sits on the committee that does the investigating……and to be fair there are again several white members being looked at…but it does strike one as odd that only its black members are getting the serious once overs….A Congressional Black Caucus member told Politico…….

“A lot of that has to do with outside watchdog groups like [Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington] that have to have a level of success to justify OCE,” the CBC member said. The good-government groups were strong backers of the OCE’s creation.

But these same groups won’t go after Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), this lawmaker claimed, “Because she has plenty of money to defend herself,” and the outside groups don’t want to take a risk. The Democrat said the ethics committee would be going up against Harman’s lawyers and “going up against” the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee if they push the OCE to pressure the ethics committee to act…..

also……

“It is kind of crazy,” said an aide to one senior black Democrat. “How can it be that the ethics committee only investigates African-Americans? It doesn’t make sense.”

Something ain’t right here……..

Charles Rangel (D. NY), Chair of the House Ways and Means committee, and the GOP……..

I haven’t commented on the Chairmen of the House’s Ways and Means Committee because I knew from reading periodically about his troubles that something was going on under the surface in his case…..Now that he has had another public outing of his tax, financial and money memory problems by the Republicans, pushing the story to the media…….A few people have now dialed in the background information….

It appears that Mr Rangel has gotten an immunity from the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and will continue to do so for several reasons…….

The First, and biggest, is that if he gets the hook, the Democrats are gonna take a big hit from the GOP, which is of course why some (but all) of the Republicans like to goose the story, from time to time……..the Second reason is that the House is loath to give up senior members …..we all make mistakes, and legislator ‘s are included….the Third is that the last time Pelosi canned someone ( Jefferson), she caught hell for it…even among House members that knew the guy was no good…….the Fourth reason is the Congressional Black Caucus….its members are very protective of the founder of the organization………the Fifth reason is that Charlie Rangel has waited for a very long time to be where he is…and he does weld a bit of power, and respect with Congress, on the whole…..and the last reason is that the Democrats in the House can take the heat…..a large group of them that are behind Rangel, come from virtually GOP proof districts, and don’t have to worry about the GOP reminding their district’s voters about Rangel’s problems…….

So unless the Ethic committee can find something REALY bad…Rangel will be sitting the Chairman’s seat for a good long while……Pelosi isn’t gonna touch him……
