To Kill the Kill Switch or Not?……Should the Government be able to shut down the US internet?

This Discussion from Defense Tech’s Kevin Coleman — Defense Tech Cyber Warfare Correspondent on the issue of a internet ‘Kill Switch’ for the US…..

We need to cut through all the clutter surrounding this issue. The proposed legislation of Sens. Susan Collins (R – ME.) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) actually restricts these so called “kill switch” powers and subjects the action to congressional review. The fundamental question is; does the President need to have emergency powers over the Internet during times of crisis and, if so, what are those powers?

Given our nation’s growing reliance on the Internet and its importance on our daily lives for everything from financial transactions to coordinating social activities, we do need the ability to protect this significant piece of our infrastructure from attacks/disruption resulting from hostile actions. Do we need a “Kill Switch”? — NO! The President already has the authority to invoke what is being referred to as a “Kill Switch” and I am having a hard time modeling an attack that would require such action. Who looked at this technically? What is the impact on SCADA systems,  if they experience a successful cyber attack, are the programmed to fail safely?

We are a country of data Information and Entertainment ……..

Flat screen TV’s…….Blackberrys….iPhones……Cable …….Xbox’s…….Satillite’s……Flat Screen Computers…….

John Anderson and Sharon Rapoport (above) estimate they spend $400 a month, or close to $5,000 a year, keeping their family of four entertained at home.

There are the $30-a-month data plans on their BlackBerry Tour cellphones. The Roanoke, Va., couple’s teenage sons, Seth and Isaac, each have $50 subscriptions for Xbox Live and send thousands of texts each month on their cellphones, requiring their own data plans.

DirecTV satellite service, high-speed Internet access and Netflix for movie nights add more.

“We try to be aware of it so it doesn’t get out of control,” said Mr. Anderson, who with his wife founded an advertising agency. “But, yeah, I would say we’re pretty wired.”

In the Dogs house……we have Five TV’s on cable….One computer hard wired to cable….and a Lap top with Wifi……a  Blackberry and two cell phones ……with a few hard wired telephones and a fax machine with a seperate line……

And we spend about $400 a month….. just like the Rapoports…….

We’re hooked……….

Internet addresses will be able to include foreign scripts next year…….

The organization that controls the internet protocols, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, will begin accepting non-Latin alphabets to used as address (URL\’s) next year …That means that there will web addresses that will wholly written in native languages like Chinese and Arabic…….

The action is international in nature and moves the organization to become in tune with nearly half of its 1.6 billion users…..But uniquely non latin scripts probably won’t play to well outside the native language of a particular country…..

The system will need have internet addresses with country codes like .kr for Korea and .ru for Russia …but the organization wants to erase the requirement for those latin scripts completely in the future…….

While it will increase the number of internet addresses and usage…..As one person mentions in the piece …the greatest way to increase the internet use is to have more basic’s…like affordable computers…….

Note: Most people do not know that the US Government does in fact have a very central position in this companies technical operation, and that the company is located in Marina Del Ray, California…..Also that the company’s protocols are voluntary……….
