commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

The Saudi’s move to blunt Iran in the Middle East and become the Top Player there….

I touched on this briefly after the Egyptians sent Mubarak packing….

The truth is no matter how much the media hypes it up…

The United States is just a bystander in the Middle East and North Africa….

The Saudi’s know that…

They have watched American President’s come and go….

Blah…Blah…Peace …

Yea right….

The fact is …

There is no peace ….

In addition…

By Bush II beating up Iraq and Saddam Hussein …

He upset a natural balance in the region….

Most people forget that the US had been working WITH Iraq to keep their eight war going on….

Iran had no time to mess with other countries in the region with Saddam constantly probing the Iranian’s militarily….

But…

After Iraq ceased to be a fighting force…..

Iran looked around the region and began to export instability and influence….

Then the Egyptian political thing happened and the ‘democracy’ was off to the races….

That movement was strong but not channeled…

It struck out across the Middle East and North Africa and probably scared the shit out of ever ruler….

And the Iranians of course saw a means to spread their brand like all political systems do….

America with its hands full in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and relief work in Japan has been ineffective in dealing with Iran….

Several infantile attempts at over throwing the Political system in that country have resulted in crushing lock downs on its young people….

All this while that countries leader’s pursue the ‘Nuclear Option’…..

Which the west  and Israeli’s have been force to attack with computer viruses instead of direct action…

No wonder the Saudi’s have decided to combat eth influence of Iran on it’s own….

The United States constantly has this internal argument in the media on WHEN will we leave the region with our Armies , Navies and Aircraft…..

No IF…..

So they have stuck out on their own …

Which of course in the right thing for them to do…

It’s their butts that are on the line…..

And we shouldn’t be so worried at the linked piece below declares…

It’s about time someone else is leading the band…

We American’s are tired….

Saudi Arabia is rallying Muslim nations across the Middle East and Asia to join an informal Arab alliance against Iran, in a move some U.S. officials worry could draw other troubled nations into the sectarian tensions gripping the Arab world.

Saudi officials have approached Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Central Asian states to lend diplomatic support—and potentially military assistance in some cases—to help stifle a majority Shiite revolt in Sunni-led Bahrain, a conflict that has become a symbol of Arab defiance against Iran.

Saudi Arabia’s efforts, though against a common enemy, signal increasing friction with the Obama administration. Its invitation to Pakistan in particular could complicate U.S. security goals in South Asia. The push also complicates U.S. efforts to guide popular uprisings in the Middle East toward a peaceful and democratic conclusion.

The chief of the Saudi National Security Council, Prince Bandar bin Sultan al Saud, asked Pakistan’s powerful generals in March to lend support for the operation in Bahrain, according to Pakistani, U.S. and Saudi officials briefed on the meetings.

Prince Bandar—who was the Saudi ambassador to Washington for more than two decades—told the Pakistani generals that the U.S. shouldn’t be counted on to restore stability across the Middle East or protect Pakistan’s interests in South Asia, these officials say.

U.S. officials working with Saudi Arabia acknowledged in recent days Riyadh’s frustration with Washington’s policies but believe the relationship can be stabilized. “They are not happy with us, and are really nervous about Iran,” said an American official. “But I don’t think they are going to go too far.”

Second Gaza Bound Irish registry ship boarded without incident…… Will go to Israeli Port instead

Having been stung by the overly military operation against an unarmed ship trying to ferry supplies to Gaza…

The Israeli Naval units this time toned it down……

No Helo assaults….

No gunfire…..

Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu is discussing ways to let aim ships get thru to Gaza with the President and the British…..

The non-violent approach aced the guns on this one….

“The use of force was unnecessary and no shots were fired,” it said. The navy was escorting the Rachel Corrie and its crew to the Israeli port of Ashdod. The statement said the boarding of the ship was done “with the full compliance of the ship’s crew members.”

Activists onboard the Rachel Corrie spotted two Israeli warships tailing the aid ship Saturday morning, news services reported. The navy “issued numerous calls” for the ship to change course but “the calls were ignored,” the Israeli statement said. “It became clear that the boat intended to reach Gaza’s shores”.

The navy boarded the Rachel Corrie by coming alongside it in boats rather than using a helicopter, as Israeli forces did on Monday when they seized a larger Turkish aid ship. Nine civilians, including an American citizen, were killed in clashes aboard the Mavi Marmara.

Israel pledged Friday to stop the Rachel Corrie from reaching Gaza. Israel stressed that it had “no desire for a confrontation” after the clashes aboard the Turkish ship. Officials said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was weighing possible changes that might allow some aid vessels to reach Gaza if they first submitted to inspections in non-Israeli ports.

Netanyahu has rejected calls to lift the blockade of Gaza, which the Israel government says is intended to prevent the development of weapons that can be used for cross-border attacks and to isolate and marginalize the anti-Hamas regime.

Why Obama has Israel’s back…and there will Never be Peace in the Middle East….Editorial…..

A few months ago President Obama nd Secretary of State Hillary Clinton …jumped all over Israeli President Netanyahu after Vice President Joe Biden got things switched up on him during a visit to Israel….

The issue was settlements….

Obama wanted to differentiate his administration from past one’s in the eyes of the Middle East by pressuring Israel to hold on the settlements (A policy to cement gains against the Palanastian ‘s )….

For the first week Obama took the fight to Netanyahu…..

The hardliners in his cabinet orchestrated the settlement caper to remind the Americans…..and the President with the middle name of Hussian…that they would do what was right for them …in their country….

Netanyahu *  keep getting hammered for a few….In the media here...and in Israel……

The Israeli right dug in…..

Slowly over the last two weeks things began to change….

Hillary backed up….

No the United Sates wasn’t mad at Israel…just annoyed….

The Jewish congressional lobby began to speak up…..Schumer, Weiner….etc..

When this Gaza caper went down Netanyahu was in Canada on the way to the US to kiss and make up with Obama….

‘Forget about the settlements …You can do what you want’……

Then the Gaza caper….

Obama responded to that from the gut initially….

Condemning the raid….

But now a few days later…..

Obama has once more retracted his rhetoric..

During a One hour call to Netanyahu it has been  reported that Obama coached the Israeli President to check his intelligence and review what went before the decision to do the raid was given to him for his approval…

Yesterday ALL of the captives where set free…

Netanyahu now has to find away back to mending his relationship with the Turks privately while they trade barbs publicly…..

Obama is disappointing back to where every American President ends up….

COVERING ISRAEL’s back while after they get themselves in trouble……

Bu doing so…

The United States loses all impartiality in the eyes of the Middle East Body public….

Let me say something here…

The leaders of the Middle Eastern countries are not the least bit surprised by this…

They have been here before with EVERY AMERICAN PRESIDENT since the Seven Day War….

And Sadly….

This is why there will never be  a Middle East Peace…..

No President has ever been able to bring Israel to the table to deal….

The Israeli right has cut the balls out of any deal…..

For the same reason their was the raid…and there is a blockade…

Fear and mistrust between the Palestinians and the Israeli’s…

Don’t tell me that Israeli’s don’t emigrate to this country after being tired of the tension….

They do…

Don’t tell me that Palasteina’s don’t emigrate to this country because of the tension…

They do…..

Don’t tell me both parties don’t intermarry and do thing together…

They do…..

Peace….

They Don’t……

Here’s a story on the close bond that Israel and the United State have on the military level…..It is almost as tight as the US and The British .

……….Close military ties between the United States and Israel mean that Washington will be unable to convincingly distance itself from the Israeli action, and American relations with the Muslim world will continue to be difficult and, in many places, dangerous.

The bloom of optimism in the Arab world that greeted the election of President Obama had already begun to wither, as the inevitable disappointments over the lack of peace progress set in.
Now, additional boats of the “relief flotilla” carrying supplies from Turkey are expected to try to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, and with the Turkish government threatening to send armed escorts, more confrontation and tension seem inevitable.

What happens to Middle East Policy when the diplomats favor one country over another?

The Dog  did a post a few days ago about how Benjamin Netanyahu is in trouble with the Obama Administration over settlements in Jerusalem….

The Obama Administration is taking a hard line against the Israeli position of counting on the two countries friendship…..while trying to exact more land from the Palestinian’s .

The ultra right parties in Israel  insistence’s that they will NEVER  settle for a peace agreement  is not what Hillary Clinton and Obama is going keep accepting….

Today I’m ‘reading in ‘for the Dog when I come across a piece that makes me say, ah!

Ok…..

This piece throws some light on how the past Washington administration’s’ looked the other way’…while Isreal operated …..

The author takes issue with the feelings of Dennis Ross…who has  handled Israel  policy for the US in the past, and is now part on the current White House team….

There is a question of his impartiality in dealing with Israeli and representing the United States……

Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State and Barack Obama as President do not have that problem ….which has turned out to be Netanyahu’s problem…..

If you would like to read a textbook example of a dust-kicking operation, please look at Robert Satloff’s heated response to my recent post explaining the problems that can arise when top-level foreign policy officials have strong attachments to a foreign country.  I seem to have struck a nerve.

There are only two important issues here, and Satloff ignores both of them. First, do some top U.S. officials — and here we are obviously talking about Dennis Ross — have a strong attachment to Israel? Second, might this situation be detrimental to the conduct of U.S. Middle East policy?

Regarding the first question, there is abundant evidence that Ross has a strong — some might even say ardent — attachment to Israel. These feelings are clearly on display in his memoir of the Oslo peace process, and they are confirmed by his decision to accept a top position at the Washington Institute of Near East Policy (WINEP) — an influential organization in the Israel lobby-upon leaving government service in 2000. As Middle East historian Avi Shlaim put it in his own review of Ross’s book:

Ross belongs fairly and squarely in the pro-Israel camp.  His premises, position on the Middle East and policy preferences are identical to those of the Israel-first school. Indeed, it is difficult to think of an American official who is more quintessentially Israel-first in his outlook than Dennis Ross.”

Furthermore, Ross served in recent years as chairman of the board of the Jewish People’s Policy Planning Institute, a think-tank established by the Jewish Agency, which is headquartered in Jerusalem. Satloff does not mention this key fact, but the implications are unmistakable. Why would anyone take such a job if they did not have a deep-seated commitment to Israel?

Please check the rest of the piece out.……

It answers quiet few questions in why there has been no movement in thew Middle East peace process for a while…..

Here’s the original insightful Stephan M. Walt piece……

Netanyahu finds himself in a jam at home also……

It seems that Binyamin Netanyahu has problems at home due from his troubles at the White House…..

While the right leaning partners in his collation government are happy to push for the start the settlements in part of Jeruslem…..a lot of others in Israeli’s aren’t…they are more uneasy with the ‘family fight’ going on between the American administration and Netanyhu’s….than people think……

The United States was happy to deal with Tzipi Livni as Israel’s Foreign Minister in the past Israeli governmenet…..the US never thought things where going to be good with Bibi Netanyahu’s ‘second coming……

And they haven’t been…..

BiBi is now going to have to figure out how to get out of the hole he’s in…..

Livni must be smiling…thinking the Israeli voters  made the wrong choice in the last election……

Over the past year, Netanyahu “pushed the envelope with Obama,” said Yossi Beilin, a former Israeli peace negotiator, referring to haggling over a full settlement freeze that had precluded a resumption of peace talks. Now that Obama has pushed back, Netanyahu “is worried and afraid,” Beilin said.

Some observers speculated that Netanyahu might be forced to consider bringing Kadima, the centrist party led by former foreign minister Tzipi Livni, his arch political rival, into his coalition to alleviate the tensions with the United States. But Gideon Ezra, a Kadima member, said that might not be possible because of resistance from within Netanyahu’s Likud bloc: Incorporating Kadima would mean concessions such as halting construction in East Jerusalem and dismantling unauthorized settlement outposts in the West Bank, steps that Likud members oppose, Ezra said.

Netanyahu gets hit by Washington and London…..

In a continuation of the ‘family feud between Netanyahu and Obama and Clinton in Washington….. the Israeli Prime minister does not give an inch…..His country has seen punitive action  also by Great Britain….. which has expelled a diplomat in connection with a ‘wet’ job done,  where the special operators had faked British passports……

Bibi is now firmly stuck trying to keep his government coalition together by digging in on the settlements in Jerusalem that some want, thus keeping them happy and an American President that has signalled that he will move ever closer to the Palestinians and Arabs to get some sort of peace in that region…..

That region has had little, or no real movement towards peace for decades…..

Things are so bad…that the White House had no pictures from inside at the meeting between Obama nd Netanyahu…..

Mr. Netanyahu finds himself at odds with the United States and Britain partly because of the coalition he is having to manage at home. He has personally moved even farther to the right, while driving a political alliance with even more conservative elements. But some analysts say that Mr. Netanyahu has more leeway than it appears, that he could build a more centrist coalition if he chose to.

Meanwhile, both Britain and the United States have become increasingly frustrated with these Israeli political currents, with officials in both countries expressing doubts about whether such a conservative alliance could ever move forward on a peace plan.

Mr. Netanyahu’s difficult position was on display during an unusually testy visit to Washington. He and Mr. Obama did not appear side by side before reporters or even pose for cameras before their meeting.

Just hours after delivering a defiant speech in which he told a pro-Israel lobby that “Jerusalem is not a settlement; it’s our capital,” Mr. Netanyahu refused to budge on an American demand that he reverse a housing plan in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood in East Jerusalem.

He did pledge to adhere to more rigid controls over announcements of construction in East Jerusalem, carrying from meeting to meeting here a diagram that he said laid out how much red tape Israelis must go through before they could expand housing there.

But it remained unclear whether he would even allow scheduled negotiations with thePalestinians to focus on substantive issues like borders and security, another American demand.
