DESCRIPTIONNate Silver

The New York Times said Thursday that it would begin hosting the popular blog FiveThirtyEight and make its founder, Nate Silver, a regular contributor to the newspaper and the Sunday magazine.

Mr. Silver, a statistical wizard, became a media star during the last presidential election season for his political projections based on dissections of polling data. He retains all rights to FiveThirtyEight and will continue to run it himself, but “under the banner and auspices of NYTimes.com,” The Times said in a news release.

The arrangement is similar to one The Times struck with the authors of the blog Freakonomics in 2007. The Freakonomics blog appears in the Opinion section of NYTimes.com. FiveThirtyEight content will be incorporated in the politics section of NYTimes.com.

Along with his contributions to the newspaper and The Times Magazine, Mr. Silver will also work with the journalists and software developers who create interactive graphics for NYTimes.com.

“Nate won considerable recognition during the 2008 presidential campaign for his timely and prescient reports on the electoral races and on public opinion,” Bill Keller, the executive editor of The Times, said in a statement. “We look forward to his unique perspectives on statistics, covering a wide swath of issues relating to politics, culture and sports.”

Before making a name for himself with political calculations, Mr. Silver’s specialty was baseball statistics. In 2002 he sold a predictive system he had built, called Pecota, to Baseball Prospectus. He was a managing partner at Baseball Prospectus until he stepped down in March 2009.

By then, he had turned his attention primarily to politics. In the early months of the last presidential election, Mr. Silver was disenchanted with media coverage and analysis of the primary election polls, so he started dissecting the data in blog entries on the Web site Daily Kos. “I get as excited about polls as anyone; at the same time, I believe that people tend to misuse them, focusing more on the end numbers and not so much on the internals,” he wrote in a blog post in December 2007.

Jeremy Piven and a back stage look at Broadway…….

The star actor from the cable hit Entourage, came to Broadway a year ago to do the David Mamet play “Speed the Plow”………six weeks into the show Piven quit …claiming health issues…the went back to the west coast the target of ridicule and late night host jokes as being difficult to work with…….

The case went into arbitration and the New York Times has gotten a hold of the arbitator\’s 1600+ page ruling, which clears the actor of any wrong doing, and paints the picture of a ‘hard driving’ producer who doubts his star, second and third guesses him, yells at doctors , and is just concerned with making a buck……..

Interesting,…….in the end the producer made his money……and Piven won his good name back……. maybe……

Do single women prefer men in relationships?

I wasn’t gonna do a post this afternoon…but while scanning the New York Times on the net’ I came up on this piece and I had to post it…….

Single women are always getting involved with attached guys…Lettermen, Jon Gosselin, Bill Clinton, various state governor’s…..Why?….Is it the pre-tested thing?…Is it the, I’m gonna take him from her thing?….Is it the, he’s got a job thing?….Or, is it the he’s powerful thing?

I don’t know…but the question is interesting…….

Comments….anyone?

There’s more oil out there than they want you to know about……shouldn’t that drive the price down?

The New York Times is out with a piece that explains that there have been more oil deposits discovered recently……thru new, and deeper drilling methods, previously off limits deposits are becoming accessible……..this is good news for the people, governments and economies of  Iraq’s Kurdish region, Australia, Israel, Iran, Brazil, Norway, Ghana and Russia….in addition, more oil  ( for the U.S.) seems to be under the Gulf of Mexico……..

Though the popular urban myth is we’re running out of oil….that tsimply isn’t true……..Could that be about keeping prices high?

The new Healthcare provider….Your local Fire Department…….

The New York Times’ Ian Urbina spotlights a growing phenomena in America……The  increased use of the nations Firefighters as healthcare providers……spot lighting Washington D.C.’s Engine 10 (which is assigned to respond to all Emergency Medical calls in its area)…….the piece shows how the four person engine company responds to medical calls 80% of the time verses real fires, and false alarms….it points to the fact that the firefighters have become the last line of response for the Nations capital’s poor, who cannot afford hospital care……

The fire fighter’s gripe that they joined the fire service to fight fires but, they actually spend almost every hour of their twelve hour tour of duty assisting the sick, and the ill ( along with the districts EMS units).  Almost no one recognizes this aspect of the healthcare issue, and I’m glad someone reported on this………..

Is Justice Stevens the next to leave?

The New York Times goes with an observation piece this morning……. noting that Supreme Court  Justice John Paul Stevens (who is 89 years old), and a liberal on the Unted States Supreme Court, has been slow in hiring staff for this falls session. The same thing happened when Justice Souter decided to step down. Stay tuned…………..
