Nikki Haley……..Who should be South Carolina’s next governor……..Backrounder…….

With all the dirty tricks against her…

And national attention…

It is almost a lock that she will win the run off election on June 22 in South Carolina….

With the make-up of the state….

She will become the prohibitive favorite to take over the seat from out going Governor Stanford….

Just who is the woman?

Nikki Haley, the favorite to become the first governor of South Carolina who is neither white nor male, has always challenged established norms with her own brand of moxie.

As a girl, her parents — the first Indian immigrants this small, working-class town had ever seen — entered Nikki and her sister in the Little Miss Bamberg pageant. The judges of the contest, one that crowned one black queen and one white queen, were so flummoxed that they simply disqualified Nikki and her sister, Simran — but not before Nikki, about 5, sang “This Land Is Your Land.”

Ms. Haley, 38, upended things again last week after a sharp-elbowed primary that included allegations of marital infidelity and pitted her against the lieutenant governor, the attorney general and a congressman. Ms. Haley, a state legislator, received 49 percent of the vote, but faces a June 22 runoff with Representative Gresham Barrett, whom she beat by more than 25 points Tuesday. And this from a campaign that was so underfinanced that it had to sell yard signs at $5 apiece, Ms. Haley said.

Now, she finds herself one of the brightest rising stars in theRepublican Party, a Tea Party favorite, a Sarah Palin endorsee and the subject of national attention.

“I love that people think it’s a good story, but I don’t understand how it’s different,” she said in an interview Friday, in a voice with a faint watermark of Southern drawl. “I feel like I’m just an accountant and businessperson who wants to be a part of state government.”

Ms. Haley — born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa and always called Nikki, which means “little one,” by her family — said that growing up in Bamberg was at times tough. Her father wears a turban and, though male Sikhs are not supposed to cut their hair, her brothers’ was trimmed after teasing at school grew vicious. “It’s survival mode,” she said. “You learn to try and show people how you’re more alike than you are different.”

But her political rise has raised questions about her difference, and she has become more careful about how she presents the religious aspect, in particular, of her life.

The Dog thinks Haley will win the South Carolina Governor GOP Primary…..But can she avoid a run-off?

Nikki Haley

Publicity is publicity….

Good or bad….

And it is free advertising for most cash strapped politicians…..

Even if they are Tea Partiers with Sarah Palin endorsements….

Nikki Haley  down in South Carolina is gonna get a boost from people in her state making remarks about her skin color, her supposed religion and her supposed sex life……

Good for her…

South Carolina state Rep. Nikki Haley shows no sign of suffering any damage from allegations that she has had extramarital affairs, with a new poll showing she continues to hold a 20 point lead in her bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. A majority of voters say they don’t believe the accusations of infidelity.

Going into Tuesday’s primary, Haley runs ahead of the Republican field with 43 percent followed by Rep. Gresham Barrett at 23 percent, Attorney General Henry McMaster at 16 percent, and Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer at 12 percent, with 7 percent undecided, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted June 5-6.

Haley has gained four points in her level of support since PPP’s poll two weeks ago when she held a similar advantage over her nearest rival.

She is seen favorably by 58 percent of likely voters and unfavorably by 23 percent, with 19 percent undecided. The 35 point spread in her favor is about the same as it was in the last poll.

Last week, a state lobbyist who had resigned from Bauer’s campaign claimed he had a tryst with Haley in 2008. It was the second such allegation, following one by a former aide to Gov. Mark Sanford who said he had physical relations with Haley in 2007. Haley vigorously denied both accusations.

Fifty-four percent of voters do not believe she has had extramarital affairs while 13 percent do, with 33 percent undecided.

“Nikki Haley’s in good shape,” said PPP’s Dean Debnam. “Her campaign has deflected the allegations against her well and so far she hasn’t suffered any political damage in the wake of them.”

The question for Haley is whether she can get to the 50 percent she needs to avoid a runoff. If there is one, Barrett appears to be the candidate with the second place momentum, picking up 7 points of support since the last poll.

SC Governor candidate Haley the victim of slurs on her and her religion by opponent…..Update….

And Daniel wanted to know why the Dog went with this story???

Someone here from South Carolina mentioned that things could get nasty down there….

Well…They nailed it!……

Her GOP rival unleashed a few descriptive words about her…and now he’s saying….’It was all in fun?’

What fun?

[ Nilkki Haley and Jake Knotts ]

Lexington state Sen. Jake Knotts called political rival and Republican gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley a “raghead” on an Internet political talk show Thursday evening.

The term is a slur typically used against Arabs or other ethnic groups who wear turbans or headdresses. Haley, a state representative from Lexington, is the child of Indian immigrants.

“We already got one raghead in the White House,” Knotts said. “We don’t need another in the Governor’s Mansion.”

According to those present and watching the show, “Pub Politics,” Knotts also talked at length about Haley’s parents’ religion and her family. Haley was raised as a Sikh, but converted to Methodist and has said she attends both services. “Pub Politics” host Wesley Donehue said the video will be posted today.

Haley’s religion was raised as an issue during her first S.C. House run in 2004, when anonymous fliers claimed — inaccurately — that she was a Hindu. Haley won the race, unseating the House’s longest-serving lawmaker.

Haley is in a four-way contest for governor. Knotts is a longtime ally of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who is also running for governor. Wednesday, Bauer campaign consultant Larry Marchant said he had a one-time sexual encounter with Haley in 2008. Bauer asked Marchant to resign, but Haley accused Bauer of “fishing” the story to the press. The allegation was the second in as many weeks against Haley, who has maintained she has been faithful to her husband of 13 years.

It seems that Knotts contiued on with the remarks after leaving the show……

Wesley Donehue, a political consultant who co-hosts “Pub Politics,” says he believes the comment may have been in jest, but it crossed a line.

“I guess it was made as a joke,” Donehue says. “He was talking about her religion and I think he took it a step too far.”

“Knotts always says what’s on his mind, so in that respect, he’s a very honest guy and whatever comes top of mind he always says it,” Donehue adds.

Donehue and the team behind “Pub Politics” originally said they would release the audio of the program, but now say they will not until at least after Tuesday’s primary election.

Knotts did issue an apology of sorts after his remarks. “I still believe Ms. Haley is pretending to be someone she is not, much as Obama did, but I do apologize to both for an unintended slur,” Knotts says.

However, the Free-Times, a Columbia newspaper, reports that Knotts went further in his comments after the show was over. The paper published an article claiming he repeated the use of the term “raghead,” and said that Haley was “programmed to run for governor of South Carolina by outside influences in foreign countries.”

A second source backs up the content of that report.

Things get nasty in South Carolina Governors race…..2nd Affair alleged for Nikki Haley….

Well…..

It seems that Larry Merchant (A lobbiest, who up until today worked for LT. Gov. Andre Bauer’s campaign ) alleges he had a one stand with Haley….( he left Bauer’s campaign )

But admits he can’t offer ANY evidence to prove it…..

WTF?

Is this for real…Or another way the ‘Good Ole Boys’ are trying to stop Haley’s rise in the polls?

Haley…Whose parents are from India…Was born in South Caroline, and is a married mother of two and Tea Partier, She has been endorsed by Sarah Palin…..And  has surged in the polls* and seems good to take the GOP  nomination….

She just had another affair rumor shot down RedState….A Conservative Blog site that does’ t like SE too much and is ran by Erik Erickson who also works on John Kings new daily CNN program…..

Unless things get too stupid ……

And they already are…..

Lobbyist Larry Marchant admitted he had no proof to back up his allegation of a one-night stand with state Rep. Nikki Haley in 2008 and her campaign vehemently denied the allegation. The claim became the latest political drama for a state that was roiled when Gov. Mark Sanford made a tearful confession last summer to sneaking out of the country to rendezvous with an Argentine woman.

Earlier in the day, Marchant resigned from the campaign of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who is competing with Haley for the GOP nomination in the June 8 primary.

“It never happened. Absolutely not,” Haley said emphatically about Marchant’s claim during a debate with Bauer and the two other Republican candidates in Charleston. “This is just disgusting politics. Two or three months ago I was Nikki who? and nobody was saying anything and a couple weeks ago we started going double digits up in the polls and now we have had everything thrown at us.”

Haley’s campaign manager had the same message.

“As Nikki Haley rises in the polls, the good old boys in Columbia see their taxpayer-funded fraternity party coming crumbling down, and they will say or do anything to hold onto their power,” Tim Pearson said earlier. “This is South Carolina politics at its worst.”
