Interesting…..Colin Powell WAS offered a Cabinet postion…..

As a connection to his work for the Mentoring Program she did after leaving the State Department….

President Obama DID offer Colin Powell the Education Secretary job when he started up his administration…

We all though it should have been offered at the time…and it was!….

From PolitcalWire…..

Powell Was Offered Cabinet Position

Ben Smith notes another interesting tidbit from Jonathan Alter’s The Promise: President Obama offered Colin Powell the job of secretary of education and gave it to Arne Duncan only after Powell turned him down.

Kucinich climbs on board for the Healthcare Bill……

[ Rep. Dennis Kucinich walks away from Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland Monday. He accompanied President Obama to Strongsville, Ohio, where he spoke about healthcare reform. ]

Nothing like a ride on Air Force One to change your mind, huh?

Fineman: Kucinich a Yes on Healthcare Reform

by Jonathan Singer, Tue Mar 16, 2010 at 08:53:27 PM EDT

Via National Review online editor John McCormack and The Hill reporter Jordan Fabian, Howard Fineman apparently reported tonight that Ohio Democratic Congressman Dennis Kucinich, previously a no on healthcare reform, will vote aye. If this report pans out — and we should know for certain by tomorrow morning, when Kucinich is slated to hold a press conference — the Democrats would have their first announced no-to-yes switcher on healthcare reform. The goal of 216 is looking increasingly achievable for Nancy Pelosi.

The President passes his annual medical……

That blood pressure reading!…damn!

The guy IS calm…….

President Obama underwent a 90 minute medical check-up and the doctor who conducted the exam pronounced him in “excellent health” but said he needed to continue his efforts to stay away from cigarettes, according to a White House statement.

“The President is in excellent health and ‘fit for duty,'” said White House Physician Jeffrey Kuhlman said in a statement. “All clinical data indicate he will remain so for the duration of his Presidency.”

Kuhlman said Obama was using “nicotine replacement therapy” in his efforts to kick the habit.

Obama, who frequently plays basketball and golf, also is taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory to deal with occasional pain from chronic tendinitis in his left leg, and Kuhlman also recommended an exercise regimen to help him strengthen his leg muscles.

Kuhlman’s report said Obama’s pulse rate was 56 and his blood pressure 105 over 62, which are considered to be very good numbers. While the report on his cholesterol was also good, Kuhlman recommended that Obama modify his diet to bring down his bad cholesterol which can form plaque that hardens and narrows the arteries.

Obama was also given a virtual colonoscopy, a scan that avoids the more invasive procedure that uses as camera passed into the large intestine, and was found to be free of any sign of cancer

Note.……The Marine One chopper he’s shown boarding….. has be older than the Secret Service agent and Marine driver in the picture……

Common sense prevails….Justice Dept. advises the President to forget the politics of the issue…some Gitmo people can never be tried or go home…..

I am glad to see this story…while the thought of holding people indefinitely…..without trial doesn’t seem right (and will bother a great many people here, and abroad )….the reality of the world these days, dictates that the Justice Task Force’s recommendations make sense……

A Justice Department-led task force has concluded that nearly 50 of the 196 detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, should be held indefinitely without trial under the laws of war, according to Obama administration officials.

The task force’s findings represent the first time that the administration has clarified how many detainees it considers too dangerous to release but unprosecutable because officials fear trials could compromise intelligence-gathering and because detainees could challenge evidence obtained through coercion.

While this is not where we might want to be….this country is in reality there already……

Human rights advocates have bemoaned the administration’s failure to fulfill President Obama‘s promise last January to close the Guantanamo Bay facility within a year as well as its reliance on indefinite detention, a mechanism devised during George W. Bush‘s administration that they deem unconstitutional.

The issue is very difficult…while the administration wants to certainly get rid of the problem…it faces problems at home on closing Gitmo…a big campaign promise Obama made…. Which is dear to the public abroad…..

Moving a significant number of detainees to the United States remains key to the administration’s now-delayed plan to empty the military facility. The federal government plans to acquire a state prison in Thomson, Ill., to house Guantanamo Bay detainees, but the plan faces major hurdles.

Congress has barred the transfer of the detainees to the United States except for prosecution. And a coalition of Republicans opposed to any transfers and some Democrats critical of detention without trial could derail the possibility of using the Thomson facility for anything other than military commissions, according to congressional staffers.

The task force comprised officials from the departments of Defense, State, Homeland Security and Justice, as well as agencies such as the CIA and the FBI. Officials said that the process of assessing the detainees was extremely challenging and occasionally contentious, but that consensus was reached on each case in the end.

Some European officials, who would like to see Guantanamo Bay closed without instituting indefinite detention, are advocating the creation of an internationally funded rehabilitation center for terrorism suspects in Yemen and possibly Afghanistan. They say such a facility would gradually allow the transfer of all detainees from those countries back to their homelands, according to two sources…….

The timetable Obama gave a year ago is already past…..It will be forgotten…it was political in nature anyways……the solution for the detainees will involve a lot of work by a lot of people and its anyones guess what the final solution will be….

One must also be mindful of the political consequences of a major terrorist act, committed by someone the United States had in custody, that was found out, to have been released…..that is the stuff that can ruin a politicians political life for ever…..and get people killed……

Things swing back the other way…….58% of American’s favor waterboarding to get info from badguys…..

This is how things go when the media goes batshit on a subject…….first they broke Obama’s chops because  the U.S. had a torture policy…now things swing the other way…..

It’s also why I posted the same sentiments and picked up BS oversight, when the torture policy got changed…….

This info is from a Rasmussen Poll linked above……

The Washington and Media power games begin on the 'surge' decision…….

I did a long post yesterday on the process pieces that came out in all the major media outlets on late Saturday…there must have been an off the record briefing …because right after all these people posted their stories……now the garbage part is playing out…..

Anyone who is tuned into this stuff (I am, because I write this blog) immediately picks up on the trail laid in this morning…..that is the President Obama ….the Commander-in-Chief gave General Stanley McCrystal essentially what he asked for in the summer for as his tolls to do the job in Afghanistan……

SO WHAT?

The General has been doing what he does for decades…he IS the expert.….

As I write in my post…all the heavies told him not to ask for troops….he did

The heavies….. Once  they knew he wasn’t going to back off backed up and let him walk the tight rope by himself…..

Obama sent for the General when he was in England during the summer and had a face to face sit down aboard Air Force One…..the heavies where not there

McCrystal is a warrior…not a big time politician…although, by getting to be general you do have top play politics….

In the end…Obama really had no choice….McChrystal was just showing his boss the right path once President Obama decided wasn’t going to be the guy to lose Afghanistan without a fight…

Really people….everyday bosses all over the plant get great idea’s from the people working below them……

And the President is the Commander-in-Chief.….Only he can sign off on the moves…..

For Obama to have somehow pulled this strategy out from under a rock is preposterous……

Give both of theses men credit for not letting their ego’s get the way of solving a problem….there are too many lives involved to do it any other way……

The administration quietly softens its stance on travel to and from Cuba…..

Quietly …the White house has begun  to let the State Department grant travel visa’s to Cuban’s seeking to enter the United State and the House is working on a bill to clear travel between the two counties……..

It is about time…the United States will be able to assert its power on the countries political system by the influx of goods and services…..as in Russia and China….this countries economic wave always is its best weapon……

What has President Obama done in his first year?…..Plenty…..

In this piece on President Obama’s first year, by Jacob Weisberg, he is measured largely in the expected passage of a Healthcare bill….but I will also add another thing…..This country may still have high unemployment…..but, the economy is on the mend….the piece give a thumbs up to the Stimulus package that the White House got passed….and President Obama gets props on that also…Finally, while the foreign affairs thing has consisted of mostly apologizes……there have been not demonstrations against the policies of the american government for almost a year…something impossible under the previous administration…..

Not bad for a rookie….Not bad…..
