Supreme Court Justice Stevens will retire……..

The Supreme Court announced Friday that Justice John Paul Stevens will retire.

This has been a open secret for the past year……

The almost 90 year old Justice will throw in the towel giving President Obama another Justice to appoint to the Nation’s highest court…..

The White House having been signaled thru back channels has been laying the ground work for Stevens replacement…which will certainly in the same policy mode as the Justices center left leanings……

Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens will retire, the high court’s press office said Friday.

His departure after nearly 35 years on the bench will give President Obama another opportunity to shape the court.

Stevens, who turns 90 on April 20, was not on the bench for a brief public session Monday; the court will hold its next public session in two weeks.

Speculation over Stevens had increased after he confirmed last fall he hired only one law clerk for the next court term, which begins in October. Sitting justices can hire four law clerks, while retired members get only one.

The White House has quietly but actively prepared for weeks in anticipation of a vacancy, government sources said.

Obama nominated Justice Sonia Sotomayor last year, putting the first Latina on the court.

Democrats cited the choice as a uniting force among progressives, saying it gave the president a signature moment in his first year in office. White House officials privately express hope another high-profile nomination would build political momentum in an election year.

SE on the Indiana Senate Bayh Retirement……

From SE….

Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh will not seek re-election this year, a decision that hands Republicans a prime pickup opportunity in the middle of the country.

“After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so by serving in Congress has waned,” Bayh will say.

Bayh will announce the decision at a press conference later today. He was first elected to the Senate in 1998 and was re-elected easily in 2004. National Republicans had recruited former Sen. Dan Coats to challenge Bayh in 2010 although polling suggested Bayh began the race with a 20-point edge. He also had $13 million in the bank at the end of the year.

Prior to being in the Senate, Bayh served two terms as governor of the Hoosier State. He also served briefly as Secretary of State.

This is great news. Now if the GOP would coalesce behind former Congressman John Hostletter, that would be great. Possible Democratic replacements are Congressmen Peter Visclosky, Joe Donnelly, Andre Carson, Brad Ellsworth, and Baron Hill. Your thoughts.

The Dog thoughts are that this seat goes from Safe democratic to ??????

Merlin on Rep. Patrick Kennedy's retirement from the House……

Hello Dog and good morning!

Your Party is heading for the Exits.

As much as I said yesterday that I didn’t see the Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL 21) coming,…… I didn’t saw this Retirement coming either.

Politico as well as other outlets in Washington and in Rhode Island reporting that longterm Congressman and Son of the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI 1) won’t seek Reelection this year.

For the first time since 1962 there will be no Kennedy in the U. S. Congress after this years Midterm Elections.

Here are some Quotes from Patrick Kennedy after Democrats lost Ted Kennedy’s Seat in Massachusetts earlier this year:

Kennedy called your Party and I quote: “the most undisciplined party there is out there.” AND Voters were looking for “blood”.

Dog,

when folks like Kennedy announcing Retirement your Party is in deep, deep trouble.

Here’s a link to the announcement via CNN…..

California Rep. Diane Watson (D-Calif) will retire…….

From The Hill.…..

Rep. Diane Watson (D-Calif.) is set to announce her retirement, according to Democratic sources.

Watson’s central Los Angeles district isn’t expected to be competitive in the general election, as it carries a distinct Democratic advantage as a majority-minority district. President Barack Obama won it 87-12 in 2008.

Rep. Ehlers to retire

Former California State Assembly Speaker Karen Bass is thought to be an early front-runner to replace Watson.

Watson, 76, has served in Congress since 2001. Prior to that, President Bill Clinton appointed her ambassador to Micronesia.
