Senator’s Collins and Snowe are happy with the year old Stimulus Bill…..

Proving that all politics is local…..the Moderate Republican Senators are bucking the GOP party line and heaping praise on the Bill which they signed on to…..

[Senator’s Snowe and Collins of Maine]

This from USAToday…..

While many congressional Republicans were lining up yesterday to call the year-old economic stimulus a failure, two GOP lawmakers who supported the $862 billion package were signing its praises — not in Washington, but in their home state of Maine.

Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, both Maine Republicans, issued a joint statement touting the Transportation Department’s decision to award $14 million in stimulus funds to the state’s ports, according to the Bangor Daily News. “Given that our great nation is recovering from the deepest recession since World War II, this funding is a step forward that will assist in the expansion and rehabilitation of these vital ports,” the statement said, according to the newspaper.

The story — headlined Stimulus dollars headed to Eastport, Searsport — can be found here.

The pair of Maine moderates are the only Republicans in the Senate who supported the stimulus package. (Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania was a Republican when he voted for the stimulus last year but has since switched to the Democratic party.)

Unlike many of their GOP colleagues, Snowe and Collins didn’t make any comments yesterday about how they think the stimulus package is working overall. Spokesmen for Snowe and Collins didn’t return phone messages seeking comment yesterday.

The Democrats go back to Senators Snowe and Collins…..again…

With the Healthcare Bill now coming up on the floor in the next few weeks….We go back to the same ole’ script….Keep the Democrats in the senate, in line…but get Maine’s moderate Senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins on board if you can, for insurance…and bipartisan cover…..

We have seen this act in the Stimulus bill and other situations…and the process the democrats hand both senator enormous power of the final outcome of this bill as in other cases….

Both Collins and Snowe did not vote to bring the Healthcare Bill to the Senate floor, but that is because their votes were not needed (they knew the democrats had the votes)…..

But now when the things get serious…it is ‘let’s make a deal time’…and there will be deals..no doubt

Because in the end the Democrats will benefit greatly if they can say the bill  has bipartisan backing…they care probably do it alone….

But that would be a hollow victory with risks for the party, and the president if the bill ‘s policies turn out to not work….

The ‘real’ battle begins on Healthcare…60 votes in the senate……

With comfortable numbers in the House…the action now moves to the US Senate where Majority Leader Reid (who is up for reelection) must carve out a majority of 60 votes to give the President a Healthcare Bill……..Reid will have to make promises, compromise and give goodies to get enough Democrats, and the few Republicans ( Snowe and Collins?) to approve a bill…….

As I’ve said before, I think the President doesn’t really acre if gets a’ public option’ or something else., as long as he gets at least a few republicans…..But that issue  of the option will be the tipping point for liberal,  blue dog Democrats and the Republican party….Reid, a former boxer…has his work cut out for him……..
