The Marines sign up a water polo team….In Aftganistan…..

Only the Marines….

Marine reservist Jeremy Piasecki…thought it might be a good idea to have a water polo team for the country…..

Piasecki of course has a background in the sport back home in California…….

So he’s formed a non- profit corporation and is recruiting players…and with the help of his wife….and us media types pushing the story….hopes to get the team up and running……

The military brass and the politicians in Kabul, the capital, and Washington have ideas about what Afghans need to buck up their spirits during the struggle with the Taliban. Piasecki has his own view.

“They need heroes,” he said while on security patrol in Marja, guarding a couple of Marine generals after the recent offensive that wrested control of the area from the Taliban.

For two years Piasecki has pursued his quixotic dream. He knows that his zeal for the notion of nation-building through athleticism seems strange to many. Especially nation-building through water polo.

“They just don’t understand,” he said.

In 2008, while working on a civilian contract job with the Afghan army, he held tryouts after finding an abandoned swimming pool at a base east of Kabul. The pool was dry and clogged with weeds. Piasecki had it cleaned and filled with water.

True, during the tryouts, he had to jump into the pool to keep some of his candidates from going under. And finding Speedo-style swimsuits, the traditional uniform of water polo players, was not easy in the bazaars of Kabul.

But now he has lined up several dozen players, mostly Afghan soldiers. The rub is finding the money to bring the team to the U.S. for training and people-to-people diplomacy.

Popular in Australia, Canada and some European countries, water polo is also big in the United States, particularly in Southern California, and Piasecki wants to recruit some of the many coaches he knows. And he’s eager for the Afghans to meet Americans.

Scott McCook remembers the early-morning call he got from Piasecki, who had coached his daughter in Fallbrook, Calif. Piasecki was asking for help raising money.

“It was kind of surreal,” McCook said. “I was groggy and it took me a few minutes to catch on. Finally, I asked him, ‘Water polo in Afghanistan? Are you kidding?’ ”

Tiger Woods will meet with a small press group on Friday…….

FILE - This Nov. 10, 2009, file photo shows Tiger Woods during a news conference before the Australian Masters golf tournament at Kingston Heath Golf Club, in Melbourne, Australia. Tiger Woods will speak to the media Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, from the clubhouse at the TPC Sawgrass, headquarters of the PGA Tour in Florida, for the first time since revelations about his infidelity, his agent says. ( AP Photo/Andrew Brownbill, File)

The Golfing Pro will start his rehabilitation with his fans, himself and his fellow Golf Pro’s with a small get together, without questions  and under control of the Golfer and his handlers…..The press will be after him and the story ….you can be assured…..

This will part of his getting back on his feet after dealing with his life of infidelity with his wife, and whatever other demons he has had top live with in his life…..

The important things are…….. he’s trying to come back…he’s gonna play Golf …and his wife seems to be with him…. for now……

From a piece in the Washington Post……

“While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally a matter between he and his wife, he also recognizes that he has hurt and let down a lot of other people who were close to him,” Mark Steinberg said in an e-mail Wednesday. “He also let down his fans. He wants to begin the process of making amends and that’s what he’s going to discuss.”

However, Steinberg said Woods will not take any questions from a small group of media. “This is not a press conference,” he said.

It will be Woods’ first public appearance since Nov. 27, when he crashed his SUV into a tree outside his Florida home. Woods’ only comments since then have been made through his Web site.

Woods is to speak at 11 a.m. Friday from the clubhouse at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., home of the PGA Tour.

There was strict control over the appearance, typical of Woods’ career.

Steinberg described the gathering as a “small group of friends, colleagues and close associates,” who will listen to Woods apologize as he talks about the past and what he plans to do next. He said three wire services have been invited – The Associated Press, Reuters and Bloomberg – and he asked the Golf Writers Association of America to recommend pool reporters.

Only one camera will be in the room to provide live coverage via satellite. Steinberg said other writers with proper credentials could watch from a hotel ballroom more than a mile away.

“The first time out, he’s better controlling it,” fellow player Padraig Harrington said from the Match Play Championship in Arizona. “Over time, there will be questions. At the moment, the best thing is a more controlled environment and gradually ease his way back into it.

A more critical and longer piece from CBS Sports….

Here’s the Golfer out jogging on Wednesday…….

Tiger Woods, who plans on talking to the media on Friday morning, was out jogging on Wednesday dressed in Nike, who didn't drop him, and without his wedding ring.

The 2010 Winter Olympics open in Vancouver, Canada……

The delegation from Georgia entered with black scarves and a black band around their right bicep to honor their luge athlete, Nodar Kumaritashvili, who died earlier in the day.

The opening ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympics is scheduled to begin tonight at 9 p.m. ET at the downtown Vancouver arena B.C. Place, which is otherwise the home of a Canadian Football League team. It will be the first indoor opening ceremony in Olympic history.

Update | 10:06 p.m. As San Marino’s four team members enter, the oversized Canadian flag that was raised at the start of the opening ceremonies by a Royal Canadian Mounted Police color guard is in trouble. There is a fan that is supposed to make it unfurl as if in a heavy breeze. But the flag has become entangled in a rope. — Ian Austen

Update | 10:02 p.m. While Vancouver’s mild temperatures and lack of snow make the host city less than wintry, it also avoids one potential problem. In 2007, the Teflon-coasted roof of B.C. Place collapsed following a snow storm. A tear developed in the fabric, releasing the air from 16 fans which support it. — Ian Austen

Update | 9:52 p.m. I continue to be amazed at the energy of the people involved in the opening ceremony. The people of the First Nations who are dancing in the middle of the stage haven’t stopped moving for at least 30 minutes. And we’re only on the 42nd of 82 countries to enter the stadium. They appear to have incredible endurance and enthusiasm. Bravo!

On another note, the woman who is announcing the countries as they enter the stadium may lose her voice by the end of the night. She is yelling at the top of her lungs.

I also noticed that the delegations are all clad in cold-weather gear. Nice-looking, but not climate appropriate. Inside this indoor stadium with 60,600 people, it is starting to get a little steamy. — Juliet Macur

Dancers perform around four totems during the Opening Ceremony.

Man….. it’s cold enough where I am now……..and we have to have more snow…..for real!

Tiger Woods will re-enter Golf at the Tavinstock Cup in Florida…….

Tiger Woods is planning to play around again – at a golf tournament near his Florida home in March, TMZ.com reported Sunday.

The ladies-loving links man will enter the Tavinstock Cup, which pits pro golfers from the posh Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere against the neighboring Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, the Web site reported, citing a source who works for the Woods family.

The tournament doesn’t appear on the PGA Tour calendar but often draws top golfers and carries a purse of over $3.5 million.

The event would be Woods’ first golf appearance since a bizarre Thanksgiving car accident exposed his secret life as a serial cheater. He’s been linked to more than a dozen women since.

The Tavinstock Cup takes place March 22 and 23 at Isleworth. After he plays there, Tiger will head to Georgia to prepare for the Masters, according to TMZ.

Woods reportedly checked out of a Mississippi sex addiction clinic on Friday after six weeks of therapy.

He’ll be returning to the Windermere home he shares with his wife Elin – who appears ready to give the disgraced golfer a second chance – next week, TMZ reported. Cleaning crews have been spotted outside the home.
It will be good to see him back……

I’m sure he’ll be happy to be back……

Merlin….something besides Polls and Politcs……..

…….The Dog is happy Merlin has other interests…………

Hello Dog and morning!

Something unusual today. Hasn’t to do with Politics. Tomorrow evening Australian Daylight Serving Time Roger Federer (Superman) is playing for the 16th Gran Slam Titel. His Opponent is Andy Murray from Great Britain. Murray will be playing his 2nd GS Final.

Federer is playing his 8th Consecutive Major Final.

Should Federer prevail he’ll likely in the Summer become the Player with the most weeks as No. 1 on the ATP Rankings. Currently Pete Sampras holds this Record with 286 weeks. Federer will top that.

In the Head-to-Head…… Murray leads Federer 6-4.
