Is Justice Roberts and the Supeme Court going to dismantle the Democratic Parties agenda?

In the their ruling last week from the court, on corporate campaign financing…..the Supreme Court followed thru on their line of questioning when this case went before them…..The Dog is amazzed that Democrats are surprised with the ruling…..

That being said….This piece in the LA Times asks the question….Will the court….take the bedrock policy agenda of the Democrat Party….that is ….The Goverenement as a safety net…and throw it out of window…..

The piece…here’s the link…..…..is about Roberts getting Kennedy with him in order to do his deeds…..

But The Dog muses…..

remember that old GOP refrain?…“Activist’s Court’s are bad!” …..Didn’t Roberts get the memo?

And this…Who said the Courts aren’t political Animals??????

The Supreme Courts throws out some limits on corporate federal campaign spending…….

In a decision widely expected……

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that corporations may spend as freely as they like to support or oppose candidates for president and Congress, easing decades-old limits on business efforts to influence federal campaigns.

By a 5-4 vote, the court overturned a 20-year-old ruling that said companies can be prohibited from using money from their general treasuries to produce and run their own campaign ads. The decision, which almost certainly will also allow labor unions to participate more freely in campaigns, threatens similar limits imposed by 24 states.

It leaves in place a prohibition on direct contributions to candidates from corporations and unions.

Critics of the stricter limits have argued that they amount to an unconstitutional restraint of free speech, and the court majority agreed.

The Dog thinks this makes sense……..while it isn’t really fair (money wise)…having that money should not preclude corporations from saying their piece…..

The Supreme Court is expected to throw out most restrictions imposed on camapign finance…..

Why am I not surprised?

When John McCain and others screamed and fussed over individuals and companies with money ….Giving…their money…to who they wanted to win…..I thought ….

Okay…but it’s THEIR money….They should be able to give it to whoever they want…….

And not for nothing…if they have a lot of money….. Why shouldn’t they be able to give a lot of money for their cause!….This isn’t about being fair…This is about how much money you have……that’s not against the law…….

Mike Bloomberg gave himself $100 million to just win being Mayor of New York City for a third time….He used HIS money.…What’s wrong with that?

So with a landmark Supreme Court ruling on campaign finance law coming out within days……. And a series of other court decisions reshaping the political battlefield by freeing corporations, unions and other interest groups from many of the restrictions on their advertising about issues and candidates…… things are going change…..Big Time!

Folks …..Freedom of Speech is simply that…..Freedom of Speech….The Fore Fathers didn’t say anything about money…….

And there will be money and rhetoric flowing…you can bet on that!

Washington D.C. voting rights held hostage by NRA stance on local Gun law……

The people of the nations capital have been trying to get right to vote (The Districts House member, Eleanor Holmes Norton, does not actually have the right to cast a vote in Congress) for a long time……they thought they might get there  with a tack on to the current Defense Spending bill being reconciled by the House and the Senate right now…..But that’s not gonna happen….Why?

It seems that nobody up on the Hill is gonna have the NRA mad at them…..The folks in DC had in place a restrictive gun law for its citizen since 1976…some one sued against it and the issue ended up going to the Supreme Court last year, which ruled that people have right to own arms….but ……”…the justices in the majority “are aware of the problem of handgun violence in this country” and believe the Constitution “leaves the District of Columbia a variety of tools for combating that problem, including some measures regulating handguns.”

So the District still has the ability to regulate gun ownership……something the NRA is against..

The whole issue is toxic…national democrats won’t touch it remembering how the NRA was able to muster votes against Al Gore in key state in his run for president……

So….The District’s right to vote remains held hostage to the NRA……..

It looks like The Supreme Court is gonna throw out the Campaign Finance law bans on corporate and group free speech…

On Wednesday, lawyers for the conservative group Citizens United, argued before the court that the McCain/Feingold ban on corporations and groups use of their money to express their views (they did a piece  against Hillary Clinton during last years campaign) was unconstitutional.  The hearing, which re-argued the case, and brought other similar cases into the mix, had the majority of justices subject the United States Solicitor General Elena Kagen to tough questions on ban. But the tone of the questions indicated that the justices were interested in what limits, if  at all, corporations and groups should have…..The fundamental question of if they could express their views seems to be settled already by the basis of the justices line of questions, which would  knock the ban out of the McCain/Feingold bill.

When the bill came out, progressives cheered, but I felt that the basic premise that having money should not disqualify one, or groups, from being able to say their piece……..I guess the Supreme Court is gonna agree with that….And though I don’t have a lot of money…I’m fine with that……..What’s right…is right…..
