commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

The Saudi’s move to blunt Iran in the Middle East and become the Top Player there….

I touched on this briefly after the Egyptians sent Mubarak packing….

The truth is no matter how much the media hypes it up…

The United States is just a bystander in the Middle East and North Africa….

The Saudi’s know that…

They have watched American President’s come and go….

Blah…Blah…Peace …

Yea right….

The fact is …

There is no peace ….

In addition…

By Bush II beating up Iraq and Saddam Hussein …

He upset a natural balance in the region….

Most people forget that the US had been working WITH Iraq to keep their eight war going on….

Iran had no time to mess with other countries in the region with Saddam constantly probing the Iranian’s militarily….

But…

After Iraq ceased to be a fighting force…..

Iran looked around the region and began to export instability and influence….

Then the Egyptian political thing happened and the ‘democracy’ was off to the races….

That movement was strong but not channeled…

It struck out across the Middle East and North Africa and probably scared the shit out of ever ruler….

And the Iranians of course saw a means to spread their brand like all political systems do….

America with its hands full in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and relief work in Japan has been ineffective in dealing with Iran….

Several infantile attempts at over throwing the Political system in that country have resulted in crushing lock downs on its young people….

All this while that countries leader’s pursue the ‘Nuclear Option’…..

Which the west  and Israeli’s have been force to attack with computer viruses instead of direct action…

No wonder the Saudi’s have decided to combat eth influence of Iran on it’s own….

The United States constantly has this internal argument in the media on WHEN will we leave the region with our Armies , Navies and Aircraft…..

No IF…..

So they have stuck out on their own …

Which of course in the right thing for them to do…

It’s their butts that are on the line…..

And we shouldn’t be so worried at the linked piece below declares…

It’s about time someone else is leading the band…

We American’s are tired….

Saudi Arabia is rallying Muslim nations across the Middle East and Asia to join an informal Arab alliance against Iran, in a move some U.S. officials worry could draw other troubled nations into the sectarian tensions gripping the Arab world.

Saudi officials have approached Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Central Asian states to lend diplomatic support—and potentially military assistance in some cases—to help stifle a majority Shiite revolt in Sunni-led Bahrain, a conflict that has become a symbol of Arab defiance against Iran.

Saudi Arabia’s efforts, though against a common enemy, signal increasing friction with the Obama administration. Its invitation to Pakistan in particular could complicate U.S. security goals in South Asia. The push also complicates U.S. efforts to guide popular uprisings in the Middle East toward a peaceful and democratic conclusion.

The chief of the Saudi National Security Council, Prince Bandar bin Sultan al Saud, asked Pakistan’s powerful generals in March to lend support for the operation in Bahrain, according to Pakistani, U.S. and Saudi officials briefed on the meetings.

Prince Bandar—who was the Saudi ambassador to Washington for more than two decades—told the Pakistani generals that the U.S. shouldn’t be counted on to restore stability across the Middle East or protect Pakistan’s interests in South Asia, these officials say.

U.S. officials working with Saudi Arabia acknowledged in recent days Riyadh’s frustration with Washington’s policies but believe the relationship can be stabilized. “They are not happy with us, and are really nervous about Iran,” said an American official. “But I don’t think they are going to go too far.”

The White House vs Israel on settlements and peace…….

The White House….. sensing that Israel is pushing back thru its American surrogates on Obama and Hillary’s hard-line on the settlement issue…is waging a counter campaign to assure that country that the United States is still their friend and protector…but still wants the expansionist settlements policy halted….

Israel is experiencing an explosion in Palestinian Israeli population…..

The Palestinians know it…and the Israeli’s know it….

By gobbling up as much land as possible now..before any agreement is done with the Palestinian’s …Israeli’s feel their bargaining position will be stronger in setting any boundaries  for a Palestinian state….

The ultra right in the country…don’t eant of care if the issue never gets settled…

But there will never be peace in the region without dealing with this question…

The Obama administration is determined to address the issue …..since the last few American administrations have not…..

The White House just had a chat with Sen. Schumer of New York who denounced the WHite House and State Department policy shift…..but he’s now on board…..

Both countries are now in a dance, since the riff went public a few months ago…with Vice President Biden’s trip to Israel….

The White House effort, which includedremarks by senior White House officialsbefore the national leadership conference of the Anti-Defamation League on Monday night, is part of an attempt to reach out to the Israeli public, as well as to the American Jewish community, administration officials said.

Mr. Obama also called the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, on Monday to discuss plans for indirect American-mediated talks between Israelis and Palestinians, which the administration hopes to begin this week in the region.

But it remains unclear whether Mr. Obama’s latest outreach will reassure American Jews and the general public in Israel, where Mr. Obama’s approval ratings have plummeted.

“The real charm offensive needs to take place in Israel,” saidMartin S. Indyk, a former United States ambassador to Israel and vice president and director of foreign policy at theBrookings Institution. “I would accept it was a charm offensive if he caught a plane and went over there, which he needs to do. He’s lost the Israeli public. If he were to go over there and explain to the Israeli public, it would be hugely beneficial to his objectives.”

The lunch meeting between Mr. Wiesel and Mr. Obama came three weeks after Mr. Wiesel took out a full-page advertisement in a number of United States newspapers criticizing the Obama administration for pressuring Mr. Netanyahu to stop Jewish settlement construction in East Jerusalem, where Palestinians would like to put the capital of an eventual Palestinian state.

The advertisement, in which Mr. Wiesel wrote that “Jerusalem is the heart of our heart, the soul of our soul,” alarmed White House officials, in part because it came on the heels of similar advertisements from the World Jewish Congress and grumbling from members of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a powerful pro-Israel lobbying group, that Mr. Obama was pushing Mr. Netanyahu too hard.

Mr. Wiesel, who accompanied Mr. Obama last summer to the former Buchenwald Nazi camp in Germany, is widely viewed both within and outside the White House as perhaps more amenable than other pro-Israel activists to some of the concessions which many Middle East experts say Israel will have to make if there is ever to be a peace accord……

The Dog recently had a conversation with a getlemen I’ve gotten to know who has just come back rom Israel…

He was adminat that the Israeli’s contnue their settlements policy…when I pointed out that at some point Israel was going to have to give….

He looked at me and replied…..’The Plaestian’s are going to have to stop saying that they want to destroy Israel also”….

He was right……..

Sen. Chuck Schumer backs up on his criticism of the White House about Israel and the Palestinian’s….

[ Schumer and Netanyahu ]

In a suprising announcement a few weeks ago……

New York’s Senator Chuck Schumer lost himself and had a Israel moment…..

Schumer who IS Jewish..and needs to stay on point if he wants to succeeded Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader….

Blasted the White House for playing hardball with Benjamin Netanyahu on the settlements issue…..

Well Schumer has gone to the mountain….

And has changed his tune….

He now UNDERSTANDS the White House position…..

Damn right he does!

While I’m sure the story about the White House explaining their policy is a nice cover…

One would think that it would occur to Schumer that he’s going to running against the senior senator from Illinois for the Senate Majority position…

The President and most the White Staff is from?

Illinois…..

Right…..

Schumer needs to be on good terms with the White House…..

Schumer made big news last week when he said on said on the Nachum Segal Show that Obama’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was “counterproductive.” He also said there was a battle going on about the policy inside the Obama administration and that if his side didn’t win, “we’ll have to take it to the next step.”

Backing off those comments Tuesday, the New York senator said that he now sees changes in the White House’s approach to dealing with pro-Israel groups in the United States and can envision the “possibility” of changes in the administration’s policies toward Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Schumer referred to a letter Obama sent to the Conference of Presidents, a coordinating body representing several dozen U.S. Jewish groups, on April 21 (note: this was before Schumer leveled his harsh critique) and said he had several “productive” discussions with White House officials over the last week that assured him they got the message.

“The interactions we’ve had are bringing people together and people in the pro-Israel community are feeling a sense that they’re being listened to and there might be some changes,” Schumer claimed.

National Security Advisor James L. Jones seemed to roll out a new tone last week, talking simultaneously about what the Obama administration wants to see from the Israelis and the Palestinians during remarks at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy that were overshadowed by the controversy over a Jewish joke Jones told (and for which he has subsequently apologized).

“In any sense they are asking Israel to do something, they want it to be closely interwoven with things they are asking of the Palestinians,” WINEP’s executive director Robert Satloff said after the speech.

Note….Schumer must be careful not to convey the impression that he is too beholding to Isreal…..While that plays good in his Brooklyn Home District…

It will not fly with Senator’s from the rest of country even though they understand why Schumer would be that way……

The Palestinians try Ghandi’s way……..

Palestinians headed to plant trees last month in the West Bank, part of a new, nonviolent approach to assert their land claims.

There have little or no violent outburst’s from the Palestinian’s for sometime…..

They have not been in the headlines…..

While the media has not noticed this….

President Obama has…..

And so when Bibi Netanyahu pushes for settlements….there are peaceful demonastrations..but no bombings…..

The Palestinians are trying a bit of non-violence….Ghandi’s way…

While is early…they are trying to start to portray the Israeli’s as the aggressor and play the media against their heavy handiness intransigence…..

Already this has put Bibi on bad terms with the US and the British….

We’ll see how it plays….

Something is stirring in the West Bank. With both diplomacy and armed struggle out of favor for having failed to end the Israeli occupation, the Fatah-dominatedPalestinian Authority, joined by the business community, is trying to forge a third way: to rouse popular passions while avoiding violence. The idea, as Fatah struggles to revitalize its leadership, is to build a virtual state and body politic through acts of popular resistance.

“It is all about self-empowerment,” said Hasan Abu-Libdeh, the Palestinian economy minister, referring to a campaign to end the purchase of settlers’ goods and the employment of Palestinians by settlers and their industries. “We want ordinary people to feel like stockholders in the process of building a state.”

The new approach still remains small scale while American-led efforts to revive peace talks are stalled. But street interviews showed that people were aware and supportive of its potential to bring pressure on Israel but dubious about its ultimate effectiveness.
