Open thread for June 15…….Site Upgrades and White House Hype….

I’ve been busy today doing some paperwork and house cleaning  the blog for a long due upgrade…..

And believe me it ain’t as easy all as the web hosting people and WordPress says it is….

First I started off in the wrong place…

Then I found the right place but WordPress is having problems….

I vow to be patient…..

The new Web Hosting people have my money now….

On the other front….

I’m now checking the net to do a post and I notice one thing….

The race is on!

Every media outlet has something on Obama going to the Gulf, Obama telling the BP what to do….The White House in charge …Congress beating BP up…The stocj taking a hit….

And the best ones…..The Clean up is Chaotic…..

They even have a picture of my man Thad Allen looking glum…..

Judging my the comments here I guess I’m the only one out here that ain’t looking to lynch BP…..

Well folks you got what ya asked for…

Obama and his adminstration now looks like they are going to own the OIl spill…

They are in charge (Not really ….They don’t drill or cap oil wells )

They are whipping BP (Not really, that comes tomorrow )…

And  the state actually coordinates the clean up…..

BUT THEY ARE THE LEAD NOW!

SEND YOUR PUNCHES TO THE PRESIDENT and the government….

BP will settle on  putting money aside….

That’s a smart thing….

For the states and BP….

And I hear that WH Press Secretary Gibbs thinks they can capture 90% of the oil by next month…..

The Alvin Greene saga continues……

Yes Sir!

South Carolina Republican’s AND Democrat’s

what a mess…..

On to other things….

Daniel won’t be around for the you guys to kick around for a month…

He’s busy at work……

So I’ll try to do a some polling pieces and anyone that wants to try their hand at it…..

Come on!

As usual…….

Comments Please!!!

I’ll take the slow hits today……

The State Dinner for Mexican President Felipe Calderon…..

Wednesday night's second White House state dinner honored Mexican President Felipe Calderon and his wife, Margarita Zavala.

The State Dinner for Mexico President Felipe Calderon went off without a hitch….and the Salahi’s……..

President Barack Obama on Wednesday honored Mexican President Felipe Calderon and his wife, Margarita Zavala, at the second state dinner of his administration.

The evening kicked off with a star-studded arrival ceremony, during which White House Chief of Protocol Capricia Marshall, dressed in floor length pink satin, tripped and fell on the red carpet as she prepared to welcome Calderon and Zavala. Seeing her, the president called to photographers, “Don’t take that picture!”

About 200 dinner guests were then seated in the East Room, where Obama began the traditional toasts by jokingly complementing Mexico’s “pretty good soccer team.” He went on to praise his guest of honor for “extraordinary courage” and “extraordinary bravery” in “the fight for his country’s future.”

Calderon’s toast was more political than Obama’s. Speaking in Spanish, the Mexican president celebrated “agreements and actions of cooperation” between his country and the United States that are “needed in order to face new challenges” along “the long borderline that unites us.”

Earlier in the day, the United States and Mexico issued a joint declaration of cooperation on 21st century border management.

Following the toasts, the guests dined on jicama salad, green herb ceviche, Waygu beef mole, and gourmet s’mores. The tables, a combination of rectangular and square, were set with blue striped tablecloths and gilded baskets of brightly colored flowers.

Guests included Vice President Joe Biden, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Gov. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.), Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, actors Whoopi Goldberg, Eva Longoria-Parker and George Lopez, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, and Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim-Helu, who tops Forbes’ list of the wealthiest people in world.

After dinner, guests moved from the East Room to a tent on the South Lawn, where they were joined by another 100 guests invited to attend this portion of the evening. Among them were Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.), and Democratic Reps. Linda Sanchez (Calif.), Loretta Sanchez (Calif.), Grace Napolitano (Calif.), Ben Lujan (N.M.), Ruben Hinojosa (Texas), Raul Grijalva (Ariz.), Nita Lowey (N.Y.) and Eliot Engel (N.Y.).

Congress continues to fund Defense programs ignoring Secertary Gates…..

The Dog predicted this would occur…..

While he WILL get a few bucks cut here and there…..

Congress is simply not going to let Defense Secretary Gates turn off the tap of money for the nations military…

I have listed three examples of Congress going ahead with funding for projects Gates insists that he doesn’t want …or need…..

His problem is Congress signs the checks……he doesn’t…….

And programs produce jobs..which produce votes….

Despite the Pentagon’s continued resistance to developing a second engine for the F-35 Lightning II strike fighter, the U.S. House Armed Services Committee’ seapower panel subcommittee markup of the 2011 defense authorization legislation again authorizes the Pentagon to move ahead.

The move “reaffirms the subcommittee’s commitment to the alternate engine program as the best insurance against spiraling development costs and contractor responsiveness for the primary engine,” said subcommittee chairman Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., during the subcommittee’s May 13 mark up of the bill on Capitol Hill. Taylor said the continued development of the F136 will not reduce the Pentagon’s requested budget for the F-35…….

U.S. House Armed Services seapower panel chairman Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., will work to insert language into the 2011 defense authorization bill requiring the U.S. Navy to replace every two warships it retires in the coming years with three brand-new ships. It’s a move designed to get to a 313-ship fleet.

“There have now been at least three [Chiefs of Naval Operations] who tell us that they need a minimum of 313 ships and yet they submit budget requests that don’t get them anywhere near that – in fact, this request would actually take us backward by about four ships if enacted,” Taylor told reporters May 13 after his subcommittee’s mark of the bill.

The U.S. House subcommittee that oversees missile defense programs voted May 12 to boost spending on them in 2011, disregarding the president’s February budget request and more recent warnings from the defense secretary that defense spending must be restrained.

The House Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee added $361.6 million to next year’s defense budget to beef up ballistic missile defense programs. That includes $50 million for the Airborne Laser, a 15-year-old program so plagued by problems and delays that Defense Secretary Robert Gates all but canceled it last year.

The New White House Marketing Machine……

obamaberry President Obama’s “Official” Smartphone: BlackBerry 8830 (Verizon)

My have things have CHANGED!

The President wins the battle to carry his own Blackberry…

He uses Twitter and Facebook…..

The White News Media staff numbers seven the largest it has ever been…

It Director has been bumped up to a Special Assistant to the President postion…

Press Secretary has learned to use Twitter…..

And the White House has interactive websites…..

A far cry from thee information only website days of Bush and Clinton……

But is the message reaching everyone?

“This president I think by and large has not been very successful at this point as a communicator,” said Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Pew Center for Excellence in Journalism. “After one year lost a lot of support, the midterms look like they could be brutal, and I think they are still finding their method of controlling their message.”

Thus far, the Obama administration’s method has been to use as many outlets as possible, including new media like blogs and social networking sites
“We have really tried to develop content and capacities to allow ourselves to reach people as they shift their news habits,” said Macon Phillips, White House director of new media. “These tools are a reflection of the growing landscape of options that are out there. We are trying out a lot of new things.”

Phillips oversees a staff of seven, the largest new media team a White House has ever had. His position as director was boosted from a mid-level staff position under George W. Bush to a special presidential assistant under Obama. “The ultimate goal is to make sure the American public has more information about their government,” he said in an interview.

But Rosenstiel, for one, questions the benefits of Obama’s use of social media.

“The audience of old media vastly exceeds that of new media,” said Rosenstiel. “Twenty million people watch network news with an average age of 60, they don’t go on Twitter, and those are the people who still vote.”

Rosenstiel said in today’s media landscape it is essential for the president to make use of all outlets. “It is harder to be president now. You have to be able to speak Twitter and Facebook as well as network television and cable television.”

To be fair, Obama has hardly abandoned traditional media outlets. During his first year in office, he did 91 television interviews, according to Towson professor Martha Joynt Kumar. To compare, George W. Bush did 20 and Bill Clinton did 16. Kumar has studied the president and the press for more than 30 years. Her conclusion? No matter how many outlets Obama uses or how often, if the message itself isn’t clear, it doesn’t matter.

Sen. Chuck Schumer backs up on his criticism of the White House about Israel and the Palestinian’s….

[ Schumer and Netanyahu ]

In a suprising announcement a few weeks ago……

New York’s Senator Chuck Schumer lost himself and had a Israel moment…..

Schumer who IS Jewish..and needs to stay on point if he wants to succeeded Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader….

Blasted the White House for playing hardball with Benjamin Netanyahu on the settlements issue…..

Well Schumer has gone to the mountain….

And has changed his tune….

He now UNDERSTANDS the White House position…..

Damn right he does!

While I’m sure the story about the White House explaining their policy is a nice cover…

One would think that it would occur to Schumer that he’s going to running against the senior senator from Illinois for the Senate Majority position…

The President and most the White Staff is from?

Illinois…..

Right…..

Schumer needs to be on good terms with the White House…..

Schumer made big news last week when he said on said on the Nachum Segal Show that Obama’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was “counterproductive.” He also said there was a battle going on about the policy inside the Obama administration and that if his side didn’t win, “we’ll have to take it to the next step.”

Backing off those comments Tuesday, the New York senator said that he now sees changes in the White House’s approach to dealing with pro-Israel groups in the United States and can envision the “possibility” of changes in the administration’s policies toward Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Schumer referred to a letter Obama sent to the Conference of Presidents, a coordinating body representing several dozen U.S. Jewish groups, on April 21 (note: this was before Schumer leveled his harsh critique) and said he had several “productive” discussions with White House officials over the last week that assured him they got the message.

“The interactions we’ve had are bringing people together and people in the pro-Israel community are feeling a sense that they’re being listened to and there might be some changes,” Schumer claimed.

National Security Advisor James L. Jones seemed to roll out a new tone last week, talking simultaneously about what the Obama administration wants to see from the Israelis and the Palestinians during remarks at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy that were overshadowed by the controversy over a Jewish joke Jones told (and for which he has subsequently apologized).

“In any sense they are asking Israel to do something, they want it to be closely interwoven with things they are asking of the Palestinians,” WINEP’s executive director Robert Satloff said after the speech.

Note….Schumer must be careful not to convey the impression that he is too beholding to Isreal…..While that plays good in his Brooklyn Home District…

It will not fly with Senator’s from the rest of country even though they understand why Schumer would be that way……

Obama shows his Christianity and appreciation for black communities……in talks to inter-faith clergy and to black ministers……..

The President spoke in two meetings today…in both he affirmed his Christian values for community…and praised and pushed for help for blacks…..

The meetings in the White House are to bolster Obama’s standing in the black community in the face of complaints that Obama has not ‘reached back’ for blacks…..

The President was well received and supported in both meetings…..

Looks like he isn’t a Muslim, right?

Obama has often had to balance concerns that he is not addressing his political base with suspicions from some critics, especially on the question of race, that he would advance a “black agenda.” The ministers at the White House meeting rejected that concern and renewed their support for Obama ahead of the event.

Earlier, at a prayer breakfast with 90 Christian clergy from a range of denominations — from the Vatican’s ambassador to Washington, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, to megachurch televangelist Joel Osteen — Obama again showed why he can be as effective a preacher as he is a speechmaker.

The president opened his remarks by noting the West Virginia mine disaster, and saying that he spoke with Gov. Joe Manchin of West Virginia last night to assure him that federal assistance was available if needed.

But he focused on the religious aspect of the tragedy, asking for prayers “for the safe return of the missing, the men and women who put their lives on the line to save them, and the souls of those who have been lost in this tragic accident,” as well as the families of the survivors.

Obama then noted that he had hosted a Seder dinner for Passover, and an iftar meal to break the Muslim fast during Ramadan. So he wanted to continue that by gathering with Christian leaders after Easter — and his preacherly eloquence showed that this kind of setting is clearly in his comfort zone:

“I can’t tell any of you anything about Easter that you don’t already know. I can’t shed light on centuries of scriptural interpretation or bring any new understandings to those of you who reflect on Easter’s meaning each and every year and each and every day. But what I can do is tell you what draws me to this holy day and what lesson I take from Christ’s sacrifice and what inspires me about the story of the resurrection.”

The White House and Senate are close to deal on the Gitmo detainees….doing military trials not civilian ones…..

The deal is being done by the White House….. just as the Dog predicted it would be…..

AG Eric Holder will be told the results……

The Dog mentioned in a past before that Obama won’t make the rookie mistake of letting a cabinet member make a policy decision that will put him a jam anymore….this isn’t unexpected …..all president’s go thru this transformation…learning that in the confrontational world of national politics you cannot afford to let people make decisions just on their merits (imagine that! ) …..politics rears its head in everything…..

Here’s some of the piece from the Wall Street Journal…….

The White House is nearing a deal with a bipartisan group of senators to close the Guantanamo Bay prison and pave the way for more detainees to be tried before military commissions, a move that would reverse a signature Obama administration security policy.

The deal would put the alleged mastermind of the attacks of September 2001, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, his fellow plotters and other top terror suspects before revamped military commissions, rather than in civilian trials as the Obama administration had sought. These courts would offer defendants more rights than they had under the Bush administration, but fewer than they would be afforded in civilian court.

The effort, led by White House counsel Robert Bauer and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, further sidelines Attorney General Eric Holder, who at a hearing Tuesday continued to argue that the planners of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and other terrorists should be given civilian federal trials.

Any such deal would represent the final repudiation of Mr. Holder’s November decision to bring the 9/11 plotters to civilian trial in New York City, and a switch for the White House, which suspended the Bush-era military commissions as one of its first acts in office. The White House and the Justice Department appear to be at loggerheads on the matter, and Justice Department officials say they are not a party to the negotiations.

The framework of the deal is being led in Congress by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Mr. Graham wants civilian courts to be reserved for low-level Al Qaeda operatives and terrorist financiers, a far smaller group than previously considered.
