commentary on Politics and a little bit of everything else

It’s their show in Iraq…..even if it’s slow and messy…….

This piece in the New York Times is the best bit of news I have read in along, long time……

While John Leland, the reporter for the piece is writing that the America soldier’s are complaining (they ARE, soldiers…and soldiers ARE warriors)….The point is….

Like child learning to walk….The Iraqi’s are learning to do things themselves……..

The piece is an example of the success of the United States in that country…..and things are not gonna be the way we do them…but that’s okay…..It is their way of life…and their country, remember guys?

THE SURGE WORKED…….

Now the United States can begin to withdraw troops (can you image?…. The troopers are bored!…No combat!)…..

Note: Anyone who thinks that there isn’t gonna be at least 20,000 to 30,000 troops, ah, advisers left is on drugs……

NATO promises 7,000 troops for Afghanistan……

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Brussels, NATO’s headquarters asking for more troops for President Obama…..so far she has gotten promises for 5,000 troops above the nearly 2,000 that have arrived ‘ in country’ recently….the figures are in flux because several countries where supposed to pull their troops out, but will now reconsider that, several leaders will have trouble sticking with the commitment due to political opposition at home…..and several countries will send troops as advisers..not combat troops…..

Secretary Clinton, General McChrystal and Richard Holbroke, the administration’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, will be working the room in Brussels on December 7th, when NATO holds a foreign minister meeting there….

There are 40,000 NATO troops currently in Afghanistan, along with 71,000 U.S. soldiers…..

President Obama gets support on his speech about Afghanistan…..

In polling after his speech from West Point Tuesday night, the President’s numbers are 51% for vs 41% against, in a USA Today/Gallup Poll…..the White House will love that……

The figure will be 34,000 new troops for Afghanistan…..details are leaking out….

The total amount of troops ‘in country’ will reach 100,000……President Obama will have authorized more than half of the men and women sent there…this is his war now….

As I have said before here…..General Stanley McChrystal has got just about everything he asked for……and a good part of the Presidents political future is now in his hands….

The deployments start in January…although there are reports that Marine units are already on the move to the country…..

Secretary of State Clinton will go to Brussels on Thursday to press NATO for more troops for the war campaign in the country…..

The speech is tomorrow night at 8:00 PM coming from Army Military Academy at West Point, New York……

President Obama will give his answers on the Afghan troop moves by the end of next week….

According to the Cable /Foreign-Policy site notifications are being made to the other foreign stakholderrs in the action, and NATO…in addition, National Security Advisor Jim Jones, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have begun to advise their people of how things will go…..There is no mention of the State Department in the piece…but I’m sure that Secretary of State Clinton is doing her bit in the process….

It appears that all the players will be in Washington by the end of the week if  President Obama (the nation’s Commander-in Chief ) wants to do the rollout then……

Note:…..I’m waiting for the leaks…….

Update:…..I’m off by a week…the president, it is now reported, will atend a service at Fort Hood on Wednesday, then fly to Toyko for a week long Asian trip…..The target date for the annoucemenet is around, Monday November 16th, when he returns to DC…..stay tuned……

A serious look at the long term Aftgan and region's stratergy…….

If you’ve been following me here, you know that I believe that the only way the  United States can ‘win’ in that country is to surge now as Gen. McChrystal has requested, and then, under that protection do nation building to preserve any gains……..

Two things have occurred within the last 24 hours for me that have made me think that Obama is taking a longer time then expected, tenets because some basic tenets of my  above argument stand on wobbly legs…..I did an earlier post in which I said Aftghanistan is just too darn backwards to ever have the US declare ‘victory’……and that view should not be discarded….

First of all Yesterday I have a look discussion with a guy who regularly travels to India……he’s an American now but he was born and lived his youth in India…..And he’s been to Afghanistan….

His point to me on the subject was that , in agreement with my feelings, Afghanistan was a hard sell for anybody to ‘win’…he felt that the people of that country simply did not want anybody coming in to change their way of life, and their country…and that the political system of ‘forced democracy’ was flawed and corrupt. He was emphatic…the country was simply not capable of changing due to economic, political and religious constraints ……

In the case of Pakistan…my friend argued correctly that the bad guys in Afghanistan were put there by the Pakistani’s to work against India, their arch enemy…….He pointed out that it was inconceivable for the Pakistani’s to remain in a fight against these forces…why?…because in the end..when the US leaves the area, they, The Pakistani’s, will still have to deal with India….and that was their principal concern……not the United States problem with terrorism….

I also just go finished reading a strategic paper from the Democratic Strategist which is biased in one way, but which clearly lays out the argument my friend gave me yesterday……which is that any counterinsurgency campaign must deal with the three constraints I have laid out above…..

The piece, as does my friend..and my prior post,  repeats, loud and clear, the reason why no  has been able to hold, as their own, that region…..

The Aftgan’s don’t want anybody to, never have, and it seems, never will…..

But we now know this…..the United States and NATO are moving the troop levels above the 68,000 troops they have been saying are in country…..President Obama, the Commander-in -Chief is going to have to decide (take your time, Sir) WHAT HE WANTS?, WHAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED?……and the DEFINITION of a win, victory or just a get out point…….

This one is a problem  that may not have  solution….. A true Kobarishi Maru…….

Wall Street Journal presents a leaked outline of the war request by Gen McChrystal…….

The Wall Street Journal has printed a pretty detailed piece today describing the basic points of General McChrystal request and recommendations to the Commander in Chief…….

Among the most interesting information is the fact that there is a request for three different levels of troops…….

A) 40,000

B) 60,000

C) None

McChrystal is reported to want to go with choice A, 40,000 troops……but there is a BIG BUT here….according to a review of the General’s plans ……the Army, and Marines would have significant problems in getting that many troops in-country, as soon as the General has reported they are needed for a ‘surge’……..In, addition, McChrytal’s aim would be to deny  al Qaeda, and the Taliban access to Afghanistan…..the White House may be content with just keeping al Qaeda out of the country, and finding a middle ground with the Taliban……

While McCrystal is a warrior, concerned with his troops, and objective…the CIC has to deal with the political component of the campaign…And since he has publicly said he won’t leave, and he won’t cut the number of troops …he really doesn’t have many options left………McCrystal is emphatic that the current troop level will not hold ground…Units are being overrun in the boonies, and are being cut back …….

Also…while Obama is holding his sessions …Hillary  Clinton, the Secretary of State, is holding hers…Seeking to identify the role for the State Department and civilians…Unlike during the Condi Rice period, in which State Department actions in Iraq consisted of sending staff home, leaving Sec of Defense Gates to fill those spots in with badly needed military assets……..

In the end the Army and the Marines would be able to move between 11,000 to 15,000 troops in country by the end of the year and another 20,000 by next July….…Finally, the movement of troops into the country is accompanied by a serious deficiency in helicopters, and contrary to this piece, a problem with Iraq ‘dialed in’ vehicles that are useless in Afghanistan’s terrible roads…….

The battle between the White House and the General…….

The story for the past few days in the media (particularly the Washington Post) has been between General McChrystal and the White House (not the President)…I predicted that this would occur and it has arrived right on time…….

When Obama picked McChrystal…he told everybody he liked the general and he though he was a good choice…The administration then hiked General David Patreaus up to the command of the entire Middle East and put McChrystal in charge of Afghanistan and Pakistan…the general he replaced was deemed to timed, and not effective in thinking outside the box……well you know the saying..”be careful for what you wish for”…….

Let me remind people and point out that……In Stanley McCrystal, the Commander-In-Chief got what he asked for…….A tough, flexible , game and war fighter that gone on to think outside the box and come up with plan for the CIC to execute to try to win a military campaign…..

The crying and political genuflecting was inevitable because the general followed orders and gave what he was asked for……if there is any problem with the outcome, it is that the general did NOT play politics with his answer……Another reminder…Remember Rumsfeld’s action plan for the invasion of Iraq?…...NOT ENOUGH TROOPS…..NOT FOLLOWING THE POWELL DOCTRINE of OVERWHELMING FORCE……

This general is gonna sleep good every night cause he didn’t back up going in…I remember all the hand wringing after the whole Iraq campaign turned sour because there was NOT ENOUGH TROOPS…..Not this time!….This general has laid down a marker…And is sticking to the US Army’s credo of Honesty…..

Something else I gotta say here….McCrystal has asked for combat troops and non combat troops and civilians to help build up Afghanistan as a country, since it  is arguably one of the poorest countries on earth, with whole area’s looking like a throw back to middle ages with ‘sand people’.

Now since the President’s Press Secretary has let it be know that the United States and NATO aren\’t walking away from the place……there simply isn’t any other solution other than giving General McCrystal what he wants……We tried the ‘light’ thing in the beginning of Iraq…it didn’t work……give the guy his manpower and support…..Damn the ego’s and political blood-letting from the president’s handler’s…..

LET ME BE CLEAR…..MR PRESIDENT, MAKE A DECISION…IF YOU’RE STAYING…SUPPORT THE TROOPS AND GIVE THEN WHAT THE WANT AND NEED….IF YOU’RE NOT GONNA WHOLE HEARTILY  DO THAT…SEND THEM HOME…..SIMPLE…….
