Moktada al-Sadr gets a hold of more power in the political process in Iraq……

[ Cleric Moktada al-Sadr in December 2006. ]

The United States always wants democracy…..we spread the system all around the planet…..

The problem is the bad guys seem to learn the way to play the system faster than the guys the United States want’s to win….

It happened in Lebanon…it happen with the Palestinians….and now it’s about to happen in Iraq……

Moktada al-Sadr is in Iran right now…but his believers seem to have won a sizable chuck of the vote in Iraq’s recent elections……

And that is causing the United States a headache……..

The followers of Moktada al-Sadr, a radical cleric who led the Shiite insurgency against the American occupation, have emerged as Iraq’s equivalent of Lazarus in elections last week, defying ritual predictions of their demise and now threatening to realign the nation’s balance of power.

Their apparent success in the March 7 vote for Parliament — perhaps second only to the followers of Prime MinisterNuri Kamal al-Maliki as the largest Shiite bloc — underscores a striking trend in Iraqi politics: a collapse in support for many former exiles who collaborated with the United States after the 2003 invasion.

Although rivals disparaged the Sadrists’ election campaign, documents and interviews show an unprecedented discipline that has thrust the group to the brink of perhaps its greatest political influence in Iraq.

The outcome completes a striking arc of a populist movement that inherited the mantle of a slain ayatollah, then forged a martial culture in its fight with the American military in 2004.

After years of defeats, fragmentation and doubt even by its own clerics about its prospects in this election, the movement has embraced the political process, while remaining steadfast in opposition to any ties with the United States. It was never going to be easy to form a new postelection government — and the Sadrists’ unpredictability, along with a new confidence, may now make it that much harder.

Make no mistake ……this man wants power…….

And he is working had with his followers to claim Iraq for his own……

The results of the election are not yet conclusive, and under a complicated formula to allot seats, the percentage of the vote will not necessarily reflect actual numbers in the 325-member Parliament.

But opponents and allies alike believe the Sadrists may win more than 40 seats. In all likelihood, that would make them the clear majority in the Iraqi National Alliance, a predominantly Shiite coalition and the leading rival of Mr. Maliki. If the numbers are borne out, the Sadrists could wield a bloc roughly the same size as the Kurds, who have served as kingmakers in governing coalitions since 2005.

In Baghdad alone, whose vote is decisive in the election, Sadrist candidates, many of them political unknowns, were 6 of the top 12 vote-getters.

“They cannot be dismissed,” a Western official said on the condition of anonymity, under the usual diplomatic protocol.

Honduran presidential election follow-up…..Porfirio Lobo wins…..

I went back to this story to report that Manuel Zeylaya, and the interim President, Roberto Micheletti, will be replaced by the winner of the countries recent election, Porfirio Lobo.…Lobo has won 56% of the vote, with over 60% of his countrymen, and women casting their vote…..

Zelaya is still hold up in the Brazilian Embassy…..Lobo comes from a center-right opposition party and is back after losing to Zelaya in 2005 for the presidency…..

The United States will recognize the election of Lobo, which should start to put Zelaya’s grab for power behind everybody…..

I for one, am glad that things have worked out this way….I do not understand why the United States backed Manuel Zelaya in way , shape or form…..

If your term is ending, and you’re trying to a “Money Mike’ Bloomberg and change the rules of the voters thru fancy inside football, and you get the boot…to darn bad…..And the U.S. shouldn’t try to make you whole…..

Iraq troop withdrawal put off…indefinitely…….

Remember all the noise about the troops leaving Iraq by 2011?…..I mentioned that I though it was all for show….And that the United States, and it’s allies, would gradually bring the numbers down to about 40,000 to 50,000 troops, or ‘advisers’. Those advisors, I predicted, would be there for a long, long time……

So….I’m not surprised to see a quiet piece in the Wall Street Journal, of all places, mentioning that the Iraqi’s have put off a vote on asking the US to leave their country……..

Somethings are just logical……forget what the media talking heads blab about…….

NASA has picked it's last Space Shuttle crew?

Sometime around September 16, 2010, if nothing changes, the final Space Shuttle flight , STS-133, will leave the Cape Kennedy Space Center  for space……after that the United States will go thru a period of almost ten years of not having the ability to launch its own people into space……following that lull……the United States will go backwards in sending its next generations of astronauts into space in space capsules….not space ships……..from DC-9 sized space ships back to enlarged phone booths….. for billions of dollars…..

Were are you Captain Kirk?….and we sure could use a real Galaxy Class Star Ship………

Obama Canceling the Missile Shield…good mileage, a mad GOP and a happy Russia………

President Obama in his administration’s latest episode of ‘ keep’m busy, throw things at them’…..Announced yesterday that the United States was canceling the Reagan and Bush era grandiose missile star wars missile shield program………..Everyone parroted the song that the Poles and Czechs would be pissed.

When the announcement really wasn’t for them …was it?……

It was for the Russians…instead of getting in their faces..Obama has gone to his basic technique of pragmatism with a move to accommodate the Russian insecurity about the program…..and garner Obama some wiggle room in several things……namely, Iran and pressure on Europe and it gas problems……while everyone has been busy else where Obama has been told and shown quietly that the Russians have been making chess moves that have not been the US’s interest….flexing on the old Soviet satellites, backing Iran and building a nuclear power-plant for them and working to flex on its growing oil reserves…….

I’ve always said that Obama is a smart man…and this move was smart……

The Poles  and Czechs will get over there initial disappointment because they will still get Patriot missiles and a shorter range defensive system……..Putin and his President have reacted favorably to the Presidents announcement…and NATO has followed up on it with an offer to a  hold joint system, san offer the Russian’s have turned down from Bush II .

Obama is gonna get grief here in congress but, I applaud the CIC for moving steadily away from BushII’s smash mouth diplomacy (Hillary IS the bad cop to Obama’s good cop)…..and giving peace a chance……

Was it Oil for Justice in the Lockerbe release?

If you are like me…..the home coming for the Libyan Intel Officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi left you cold………I’ve heard the rumblings about a deal………oil for his release, and that it wasn’t the Scots…but the United Kingdom that worked the deal…….the New York Daily News expands on the widening discomfort between the US and the Gordon Brown government and asks ……is this anyway to treat a friend or big brother?………

Rendition and the new interrogation unit…….

I see that the White house has announced that the Bush policy of rendition, will continue…….with the add-on that the State Department will check to make sure no one turned over to a third country gets tortured……Of, course that is just face dressing since the United States can’t stop another sovereign nation from handling someone any way they want once the CIA handlers drop them off (not that the CIA won’t call back later for a transcript of what the guy said)……

On the interrogation unit thing…..this is my read……The Head of the unit….. will be an FBI agent, who will report to the National Security Council Chair……..which should make the unit principally concerned only about prosecuting that individual……..FBI agents are law enforcement officers……they build criminal cases…….and since they will be working on only the top named bad guys…..the rest will go through the system, with no change, right?

In addition, I suppose…..the first people to get their hands on the hot list people that the military doesn’t kill, will get a Q & A from the local military intel people, who will then hand the bad guy over to the CIA for a quick Q & A session before the  ‘WH specials’ arrive from DC………if , I’m even remotely correct here…..the CIA can live with this, and nothing really changes……….
