Vice President Biden goes to the World Cup Opening and does some work on the way……

Vice President Biden made stops in Egypt and Kenya on the way to South Africa….

On his stops he talked about Somalia and the Sudan……

Biden continues dealing with the issues he tackled when he worked in the US Senate……

As I posted before ….The White House is happy with Biden’s work…

And because he isn’t the President right now …..

He gets to travel……

Biden’s presence at the World Cup is typical veep stuff: earlier this year heattended the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Vancouver. This kind of soft diplomacy — on display at ceremonies, games, backyard barbecues — is par for the course for the second in command. But Biden’s trip to Africa, largely underreported, has also marked a return to the hard stuff for the man who was once chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Before heading to South Africa, Biden stopped in Egypt and Kenya to meet with regional heads of state. These visits were more than photo ops to demonstrate U.S. support for President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya. Instead, Biden went into the meetings with an agenda that is in many ways a holdover from his time tackling foreign affairs: to try to gather regional support to stabilize war-torn Somalia, and to re-energize dialogue between North and South Sudan to prevent a return to Africa’s longest-running war.

On Sudan, in particular, Biden has long been vocal. In 2007, when he was still a candidate for president, Biden called for the use of military force to secure peace in the Darfur region of the country. Then-Senator Obama was also engaged on the issue, calling for international action to end the violence in the region. Since being elected, however, Obama has come under fire for his handling of Sudan. In particular, the White House has found itself defending Special Envoy Scott Gration, who announced during a trip to the region in July 2009 that the genocide in Darfur had ended.

The Dog loves Joe Biden Stories!…..The Brooklyn Bridge CellPhone call…..

This involves Biden visiting New York’s Brooklyn Bridge…

Once there…. he meets this guy who told his wife he might see the Vice President….

He, he, he…Sure enough there’s Biden…BSing with the guy…and he tells the VP his wife won’t believe he actually met the Vice President Of the United States!

So Joe grabs the phone and talks to his Wife!

Biden is the man!

When Tom Shepherd, a chief inspector on the Brooklyn Bridge rehab project, left for work yesterday, he told his wife he might be meeting later with Vice President Joe Biden, so “I’ll tell Joe you said hello.”

What Shepherd could never have imagined was that his flippant joke would be become reality a few hours later.

Not only did Shepherd get to chat with the VP, but when he mentioned the earlier conversation with his wife, Biden suggested he call her right then and there on his cellphone.

When Betty Shepherd answered at her office, the next voice she heard was that of the vice president of the United States.

HELLO, IT'S JOE: Vice President Joe Biden shocks Betty, the wife of DOT inspector Tom Shepherd, with a call from the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday.

[ HELLO, IT’S JOE: Vice President Joe Biden shocks Betty, the wife of DOT inspector Tom Shepherd, with a call from the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday. ]
“I’m Vice President Joe Biden. I’m here to make sure your husband isn’t messing up the bridge,” she recalled Biden saying.

“I was shocked. If he didn’t have such a distinctive voice, I would have thought Tom was messing with me.”

Shepherd, 44, called it fitting that his once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a vice president happened at the Brooklyn Bridge.

“I think it was third or sixth grade when a teacher showed us a picture of them building the bridge,” he said. “I was just amazed by that. It’s been a lifelong dream to work on the Brooklyn Bridge.”

Shepherd got the chance when the city began a $508 million rehabilitation of the 127-year-old span last year, and he was hired through a contractor, Greenman Pedersen, Inc.

Biden joined Mayor Bloomberg, Rep. Jerry Nadler and other officials to spotlight the $30 million in stimulus funds going into the four-year project.

The private intelligence network in Afghanistain and Pakistan is still working……..

The New York Times has been heavy on the case of a US Government program that seems to have been set up by some ex-US government good guys, and a few questionable ones…..

If you read military action novels you are very familiar with the scenario where a President…feed up with the bureaucracy involved with the CIA, Military and other agencies…..turns to a few individuals to get the job done…To find out what’s going on without regard to career building, cover your butt, or what the chief executive wants to hear…..That apperas to have  turned into contract for Lockheed….

They in turn  put together a group of former CIA operators, who hired former US special operators (SEAL’s, Deltas and other CIA special operators and natives of the two countries)

This works since the US wants to say it doesn’t have ground troops operating in Pakistan …..

The operation in Afghanistan and Pakistan seems to have morphed into that same thing…..

The names mentioned in the piece are old CIA operators and high up US Military  who left the service to retire when new improved people were brought on board….

These old hands are now running a private service that is paid by the government in a contract to the Lockheed Corporation…..

And let me mention one thing very clearly ……

THE US MILITARY IS VERY HAPPY WITH THE SET-UP!

The New York Times seems a bit indignant  …

But the Generals that run the war are NOT…

The private contractor provides valuable intel…and the while the word has gone out that the operation will not be renewed…

The US military it appears…

DOES NOT WANT IT STOPPED……THEY WANT IT TO CONTINUE….

The whole op is not under investigation by the government but

, Michael D. Furlong ,  is…….And  if my  mind set  is  right….this was the guy who set up Vice President’s  Cheney’s separate intelligence network…….

The New York Times found that Mr. Furlong’s operatives were still providing information using the same intelligence gathering methods as before and because they are using ex-US military operators…..then natural evolution of the program has occurred and those operator ……who are supervised by military people who just a few years ago ran the Iraq war and still have friends in high places and are trusted…carry out ‘wet’ work if it comes their way….

The whole thing is…..

9/11 has changed things…..

This whole story by the New York Times misses a very basic point….

Remember when  General McChrsytal was faced with a choice of what strategy to use in the war last year?

President Obama, the Commander-in-Chief, went with door ‘B’…..the middle troop choice…The US will reach that strength level in Afghanistan by July….But few remember Vice President Biden’s  choice…..I do…..

‘Hunter…Killer Teams”….

That’s what the Lockheed group is doing….

So…..The Vice President got his choice also….Signed off on in 2009 by General Patreaus….

And the Commander – in Chief….

The Operation isn’t going away anytime soon….

No matter how much sunlight the New York Times* shines on it…..

Earlier this year, government officials admitted that the military had sent a group of former Central Intelligence Agency officers and retired Special Operations troops into the region to collect information — some of which was used to track and kill people suspected of being militants. Many portrayed it as a rogue operation that had been hastily shut down once an investigation began.

But interviews with more than a dozen current and former government officials and businessmen, and an examination of government documents, tell a different a story. Not only are the networks still operating, their detailed reports on subjects like the workings of the Taliban leadership in Pakistan and the movements of enemy fighters in southern Afghanistan are also submitted almost daily to top commanders and have become an important source of intelligence.

The American military is largely prohibited from operating inside Pakistan. And under Pentagon rules, the army is not allowed to hire contractors for spying.

Military officials said that when Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top commander in the region, signed off on the operation in January 2009, there were prohibitions against intelligence gathering, including hiring agents to provide information about enemy positions in Pakistan. The contractors were supposed to provide only broad information about the political and tribal dynamics in the region, and information that could be used for “force protection,” they said.

Some Pentagon officials said that over time the operation appeared to morph into traditional spying activities. And they pointed out that the supervisor who set up the contractor network, Michael D. Furlongwas now under investigation.

But a review of the program by The New York Times found that Mr. Furlong’s operatives were still providing information using the same intelligence gathering methods as before. The contractors were still being paid under a $22 million contract, the review shows, managed by Lockheed Martin and supervised by the Pentagon office in charge of special operations policy.

Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary, said that the program “remains under investigation by multiple offices within the Defense Department,” so it would be inappropriate to answer specific questions about who approved the operation or why it continues.

“I assure you we are committed to determining if any laws were broken or policies violated,” he said. Spokesmen for General Petraeus and Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top American commander in Afghanistan, declined to comment. Mr. Furlong remains at his job, working as a senior civilian Air Force official.

A senior defense official said that the Pentagon decided just recently not to renew the contract, which expires at the end of May. While the Pentagon declined to discuss the program, it appears that commanders in the field are in no rush to shut it down because some of the information has been highly valuable, particularly in protecting troops against enemy attacks.

With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the expanded role of contractors on the battlefield — from interrogating prisoners to hunting terrorism suspects — has raised questions about whether the United States has outsourced some of its most secretive and important operations to a private army many fear is largely unaccountable. The C.I.A. has relied extensively on contractors in recent years to carry out missions in war zones…….

………………………………

The exposure of the spying network also reveals tensions between the Pentagon and the C.I.A., which itself is running a covert war across the border in Pakistan. In December, a cable from the C.I.A.’s station chief in Kabul, Afghanistan, to the Pentagon argued that the military’s hiring of its own spies could have disastrous consequences, with various networks possibly colliding with one another.

The memo also said that Mr. Furlong had a history of delving into outlandish intelligence schemes, including an episode in 2008, when American officials expelled him from Prague for trying to clandestinely set up computer servers for propaganda operations. Some officials say they believe that the C.I.A. is trying to scuttle the operation to protect its own turf, and that the spy agency has been embarrassed because the contractors are outperforming C.I.A. operatives.……….

Note …….One could get the idea that this piece was written by someone who set out to ‘out the operation’  from a ‘turf’ war point of view……

The author has held back sensitive information he says about the operation…..

Another Joe Biden story……'Sleeping with a teacher'….

VP: 'Sleeping with a teacher'

The teacher happens to be Dr. Jill Biden……

Vice President Biden likes teachers enough to go to bed with one – literally.

Hosting a National Teacher of the Year reception at the Naval Observatory Monday night, Biden reminded a crowd of some 70 attendees just how intimately familiar he is with education.

“I’ve been sleeping with a teacher for a long time,” Biden said, according to the pool report, alluding to his wife Jill. “But it’s always been the same teacher.”

Biden had a more serious message for the attendees, too, emphasizing that the White House has pledged billions to education to “create momentum for education in America.”

Biden assures Israel that the United States has its back…..

U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden, second from right, and his wife Dr. Jill Biden, right, are welcomed upon their arrival at Ben Gurion airport, near Tel Aviv, Israel, Monday, March 8, 2010. Biden arrived in Israel Monday, the first leg of a five-day tour of the Middle East. Biden's trip is the highest-level visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories yet by an Obama administration official. (AP Photo/Baz Ratner, Pool)

Pledging that the Obama administration would prevent Iranfrom obtaining a nuclear weapon, Biden expressed hope that indirect Israeli-Palestinian talks could soon lead to a meaningful negotiation of Palestinian statehood.

“There is no space between the United States and Israel when it comes to Israel’s security,” Biden said after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the official prime minister’s residence here.

Beyond diplomacy on Iran’s nuclear program or peace process with the Palestinians, Biden is on a mission to win over the Israeli public, which has felt snubbed by President Obama’s decision not to visit here since taking office.

When Biden thanked Peres for meeting with him, Peres interjected: “We’ve been waiting for you.” Just before the vice president arrived on Monday, the deputy speaker of Israel’s parliament, Danny Danon, said Israel considered it “nothing short of an insult that President Obama himself is not coming.”

Well folks…Obama needs to stay home for awhile and get the Healthcare Bill done…then he can take care of the world…..

Biden’s four-day visit includes a speech in Tel Aviv on Thursday where he also will try to court the Israeli public, some of whom resent that Obama has visited Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia in the past year but not Israel.

The Middle East problems have had high level attention always……. even though nothing gets done…..the parties ( Israel in particular ) are not happy Obama has not spent the time there….

Some analysts speculated that Biden’s trip was a recognition that the administration’s hands-off approach had gone on too long.

“The administration finally did understand that one of the mistakes in the course of the past year was not engaging Israel at a high enough level,” Alpher said. “If the Obama administration wants to have some influence here on the Palestinian issue, it can’t ignore us.”

Merlin on Deleware's Senate seat……and Beau Biden…

Hi Dog!

Republicans potentially have catched a MAJOR Break in the Vice-Presidents Home State of Delaware. VP Joe Biden confirms to the Delaware Online.com that his Son doesn’t want to be a Candidate for his old U.S. Senate Seat. An official Announcement could possibly made in the next week.

Conversation with VP Joe Biden:

Spontaneously, he turned to the possible Delaware senatorial campaign of his son Beau.

Biden: “If you run into Beau, talk him into running; he respects you.”

Me: “I don’t think he wants to run, though.”

Biden: “I don’t think he does either. I know he doesn’t want to. … I’m so proud of the job he’s done [as attorney general].”

Me: “Would you campaign for him [against Republican Mike Castle]?”

Biden: “Hell, yes. I told him I’d give him my sixth-born grandchild.”

I doubt Beau Biden “respects” me, but it was quite startling to hear the vice president confirm what many Democrats fear — that Beau does not want to be the candidate.

Merlin

The Dog and Merlin have gone back and forth about this one…….Merlin predicting that The Vice President’s son might not run….The Dog thinking that he would…….The Dog, with the reasoning that the seat would be his, for the taking…..But there has been no news forthcoming from Beau Biden, the state’s Attorney General, and Army Reserve JAG officer……Merlin now reports the above…..and you can feel the disappointment from Joe Biden……His son’s life is his own…..with a family and the memory of his father’s own political life….the prosepect of the Senate seat may just not be there…..who know’s?…..

If he does not run…this one moves to the lean GOP column with Castle right now…..Things could change in the future……

Merlin seems to be right again on this one…..
