New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is investigating claims that the computer giant Apple has refused to sell its new iPad to people of Asian descent, apparently over smuggling fears.
The Attorney General’s’s civil rights bureau was tipped off by an Assemblywoman from a Chinese-American section of Queens, who complained publicly last month that her constituents were being asked unusual questions when they sought to buy the devices. The iPad was not yet for sale in Asia at the time of the complaints in May.
“Our Office received complaints over the treatment of certain individuals of Asian descent at two Apple stores in New York City,” said Cuomo communications director Richard Bamberger in an email.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani backed South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster for governor Monday, giving the prosecutor a high-profile endorsement less than 24 hours before voting begins in the Republican primary.
McMaster also announced the backing of former Gov. David Beasley on Friday, and previously claimed support from Arizona Sen. John McCain.
Haley counts former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin among her backers, while Barrett’s supporters include former Vice President Dick Cheney and former presidential candidate Fred Thompson. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee supports Bauer’s campaign.

U.S. military officials confirmed to NBC News today that a 22-year old military intelligence analyst has been taken into custody for allegedly providing the document-posting website Wikileaks with classified gun-camera video of a 2007 Apache helicopter attack that killed innocent civilians in Baghdad.
Specialist Bradley Manning of Potomac, Md., whose arrest was reported yesterday on Wired.com’s “Threat Level” blog, was reported to Army officials by former hacker Adrian Lamo, according to the tech website.
Manning allegedly bragged to Lamo that he had provided Wikileaks with the Apache video, three other classified gun-camera videos including a controversial bombing in Afghanistan, classified Army document evaluating Wikileaks as a security threat and as many as 260,000 classified cables.

On or about Jan. 1, 2011, federal, state and local tax rates are scheduled to rise quite sharply. President George W. Bush’s tax cuts expire on that date, meaning that the highest federal personal income tax rate will go 39.6% from 35%, the highest federal dividend tax rate pops up to 39.6% from 15%, the capital gains tax rate to 20% from 15%, and the estate tax rate to 55% from zero. Lots and lots of other changes will also occur as a result of the sunset provision in the Bush tax cuts.
Tax rates have been and will be raised on income earned from off-shore investments. Payroll taxes are already scheduled to rise in 2013 and the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) will be digging deeper and deeper into middle-income taxpayers. And there’s always the celebrated tax increase on Cadillac health care plans. State and local tax rates are also going up in 2011 as they did in 2010. Tax rate increases next year are everywhere.

Not only the Mediterranean countries, but the Germany of Angela Merkel and the United Kingdom of David Cameron with Nick Clegg (featuring George Osborne, Conservative, Chancellor of the Exchequer) are promising very painful cuts that may likely echo the 1930’s and 1970’s in prolonging and extending needless human pain. It’s as if everyone wants to forget John Maynard Keynes (a Liberal) and rely instead on the banker’s theories of those who advised Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Ramsey Macdonald, Stanley Baldwin and the Weimar Republic. (Good thing FDR didn’t follow his 1932 campaign promises to slash the bloated Federal government of Herbert Hoover.)
Only things bogus about Obama’s stimulus plan are that because of obsolete ideology and self-interested pressure groups too powerful to overcome, it’s too small, too short-lived and directed to some of the wrong places.
It’s premised on employment levels we have yet to see.
I should have said short-sightedly self-interested pressure groups: for most of them, the satisfaction of their short-term interests will eventually be more than cancelled out by the economic recession and/or stagflation, and that’s not even counting the results of blind, undirected populist anger.

Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline officially kicked off his campaign for Congress Monday with speeches at a Woonsocket bridge in need of repairs, a Smithfield factory where he touted job training and an East Providence retirement community where he called for more public transportation subsidies.
Democrat Cicilline used those stops and others on his tour of the 1st Congressional District to call for new or expanded federal aid to help a variety of interests, from small business proprietors to the elderly.
In a telephone interview, the mayor cast himself as the candidate with the best background for delivering such programs. He faces former state Democratic chairman Bill Lynch and Providence state Rep. David Segal, in the primary election, with businessman Anthony Gemma also planning to join the Democratic race June 15. State Rep. John Loughlin II is the Republican candidate.
Cicilline, who stressed his experience as a municipal executive who knows that “balancing a budget is about making choices,” said the billions of dollars for the programs he proposed should come from the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. But the mayor did not state directly whether he supports President Obama’s plan to begin winding down U.S. troop commitments next year. Cicilline also declined to specify how soon or at what rate U.S. forces could be extracted from that war, but said it should be done “as quickly and responsibly as possible.”
Cicilline said, however, that he understands that the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan cannot be concluded “overnight.” He said he would defer to the judgment of military leaders about the timing of a withdrawal of U.S. troops.
Cicilline also proposed killing tax breaks for oil companies and extracting more savings from Medicare and Medicaid by eliminating duplication and fraud in those programs. He said he believes that estimates of such savings in the newly enacted overhaul of the health-care system were too conservative. Therefore, he reasoned, there is more money in Medicare and Medicaid that can be saved and spent on other federal programs. He offered no specific estimates….

As the first-ever Deputy Prime Minister from the UK’s Liberal Democratic Party (founded around 1988), Nick Clegg presented Parliament on Monday with some far-reaching, although not novel, proposals for political reform, regional devolution and constitutional change. Some of these ideas had originated during previous governments without reaching full fruitiion.

Most of us have heard of “astroturf roots”, those artificial imitations of spontaneous grassroots popular groups that are really artificial paper-thin fronts for logging, mining, drilling, gambling or construction enterprises.
What I (and many others) didn’t know is that some local Stop Wal*Mart campaigns, involving hundreds of neighbors, preservationists, environmentalists, small businesses and trade-unionists opposed (for all kinds of good reasons) to the arrival or expansion of a Wal-Mart, have also received financial, organizational and legal help from a firm hired secretly by big national or regional retail competitors of Wal*Mart, such as Safeway supermarkets or Royal Ahold NV.

MUNDELEIN, Ill.— Robert Brownson long believed that his proposed development here, with its 200,000-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter, was being held hostage by nearby homeowners.
He had seen them protesting at city hall, and they had filed a lawsuit to stop the project.
What he didn’t know was that the locals were getting a lot of help. A grocery chain with nine stores in the area had hired Saint Consulting Group to secretly run the antidevelopment campaign. Saint is a specialist at fighting proposed Wal-Marts, and it uses tactics it describes as “black arts.”
As Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has grown into the largest grocery seller in the U.S., similar battles have played out in hundreds of towns like Mundelein. Local activists and union groups have been the public face of much of the resistance. But in scores of cases, large supermarket chains including Supervalu Inc., Safeway Inc. and Ahold NV have retained Saint Consulting to block Wal-Mart, according to hundreds of pages of Saint documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and interviews with former employees….

I’m glad Helen Thomas has retired. She’s been losing it for some time now and her off the wall comments to the rabbi were pretty outrageous. I remember when my grandmother made a comment to her minister that blacks should just have their own state. We didn’t let her out unsupervised in public after that. And we certainly didn’t expect her to cover White House press conferences.

Tory minority budget passes House of Commons thanks to Liberal abstentions
When I first saw this story on My Yahoo!, I thought it was about David Cameron’s Conservative minority getting its budget through the British Parliament with the acquiescence of the Liberal Democrats. But this is about Canada, with her own minority Tory government, which the Liberals (as in Britain) being too broke and afraid to risk a new election.
American readers will be all-too-familiar, from both Washington and their own state capitals, with must-pass budgets being used to force through extraneous bills that couldn’t otherwise win enactment. The Canadian Senate, an appointed lifetime body, is so familiar with this that it may give the omnibus bill a hard time.
Parties: The NDP is the New Democratic Party (formerly Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, CCF), a social-democratic farmer-labor party in the Socialist International together with the Labour Parties of Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Great Britain, as with the social-democratic parties of Germany, Austria and Scandinavia.
The Bloc Québécois is the voice in Ottawa of Quebec nationalism and separatism, parallel to but independent of the provincial Parti Québécois.
The Progressive Conservative Party (itself the result of a merger) was one of the ancestors, together with the more-stridently right-wing Reform Party, of the present Conservative Party of Canada, led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper (ex-Reform). However, not all the old Progressive Conservatives approved of this merger, and since Canadian Senators don’t need a party’s support in order to get reelected, apparently at least one of them kept his original P.C. label. (A parallel would be a member of the British House of Lords who called himself a Social Democrat or a Liberal rather than a Liberal Democrat.)
Tory budget clears Commons as Libs hold fire

OTTAWA, June 8th – Stephen Harper’s minority Conservative government has passed its fifth consecutive federal budget with the tacit support of the Liberal opposition.
The 2010 budget bill sailed through the House of Commons by a vote of 138-126 on Tuesday, with 30 Liberal MPs absent to ensure the budget survived — along with the government.
NDP and Bloc Quebecois members voted against the budget en masse.
The massive, 900-page piece of legislation now goes to the chamber of sober second thought, where Independent and Liberal senators are promising to give it a rougher ride.
Senator Lowell Murray, a Progressive Conservative, says he’ll serve notice of a motion in the Senate on Wednesday designed to split the budget bill and send it back to the Commons.
Murray is among a number of critics — including Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff — who argue the budget implementation legislation is an end-run around Parliament because it includes a host of controversial, non-budgetary items.
The budget bill amends some five dozen laws, including giving the environment minister the power to bypass environmental assessments on major projects.
“Oil is still flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, yet the Liberals helped the Conservatives adopt a budget bill that hands responsibility for environmental assessments to the industry-friendly National Energy Board,” NDP Leader Jack Layton said in a release immediately following the vote.
“Trojan-horse bills such as this one are the last refuge of a government trying to make unpopular changes.”
The legislation also paves the way for the privatization of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. and alters the Canada Post monopoly on overseas mailing.
The Canada Post changes were introduced by the Tories as stand-alone bills in both 2008 and 2009, only to die on the order paper.
Bloc MP Christiane Gagnon accused the prime minister of “short-circuiting debates and … undermining the role and power of the public’s representatives.”
Ignatieff, too, recently called it a “dumpster bill” and “an abuse of power.” But his party wasn’t prepared to defeat or change the legislation for fear of causing a federal election, which they’re not prepared to fight and say Canadians don’t want.
Only 47 of 77 Liberals, led by Ignatieff, were in the House for the final budget vote. The last three Conservative budgets have survived courtesy of the Liberal party, while the Bloc Quebecois supported the first two under Harper in 2006 and 2007. …

The long arm of Tory message control has reached around the world in an attempt to orchestrate virtually every public utterance by seasoned diplomats, from Britain to Bangladesh, an investigation by The Canadian Press concludes.
The secret to this unprecedented attempt to stage-manage Canada’s most experienced high commissioners, ambassadors and diplomats is the Message Event Proposal — a finely developed information tool aimed at giving the Prime Minister’s Office total control over communication.
MEPs obtained under the Access to Information Act reveal how Stephen Harper’s office has employed the device to micromanage Canadian diplomacy in the United States, the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Asia and Africa.
Even the most able and trusted of Canada’s foreign service officers have been subjected to strict controls — not by their bosses at the Foreign Affairs Department — but by the PMO through its public service arm, the Privy Council Office.
“There’s no question it has a bit of a chilling effect on people, because they know that they have to avoid being off-message at all — and that’s what the government wants,” said one currently serving diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears of career reprisals.
The central direction of foreign service officers is unparalleled, says retired diplomat Gordon Smith, who served Conservative and Liberal prime ministers as Canada’s ambassador to NATO and the European Union, was a former deputy minister of Foreign Affairs and a senior official at PCO.
“What other conclusion can one draw? But it reflects a very considerable concentration of power in the Prime Minister’s Office,” said Smith, who left government to join the University of Victoria in 1997.
“I cannot recall one occasion, when I was in those posts, I ever cleared a speech back through Ottawa.” …

G8 ‘fake lake’ slammed by opposition

Opposition MPs are ridiculing the Conservative government for spending almost $2 million to create an artificial indoor lake and cottage backdrop inside a Toronto media centre for this month’s G8 and G20 summits.
Summit organizers are constructing the artificial lake inside Toronto’s Direct Energy Centre to showcase the actual site of the G8 summit hundreds of kilometres away in Huntsville, Ont., on June 25-26. The temporary media centre will host all but about 150 of the estimated 3,000 journalists from around the world covering the G8, as well as the G20 summit in Toronto’s downtown core on June 27-28.
Opposition parties have targeted Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government in recent weeks over the costs of the back-to-back international summits, which so far carry an estimated $1 billion price tag on security alone.
During Monday’s question period in the House of Commons, Liberal MP Mark Holland asked why the Conservatives would “splurge” on an indoor lake during meetings where Canada will be preaching fiscal restraint to the rest of the world.
“The government is literally going to flush it down the drain when the 72-hour spend-fest is over,” Holland told the House. …
… Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff labelled the dual summits “the world’s most expensive photo op,” citing a leaked G8 communiqué that he said showed no progress on maternal health, climate change or the environment. On the issue of banking reform, Ignatieff said it appeared that all decisions would be left for another G20 summit in Korea at the end of the year.
Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe labelled the G8 meeting a “tourist event,” while NDP Leader Jack Layton called it a “billion-dollar boondoggle that is ballooning” under the Conservatives’ wasteful mismanagement.
“We’ve got a government here that has to create an artificial lake, when Canada has more lakes than just about any other country in the world,” Layton told the House. “It’s the taxpayers who are going to end up at the bottom of the fake lake, with a fake Muskoka behind them.” …

Senior insiders with the federal Liberals and New Democrats have been holding secret talks about the possibility of merging their parties to form a new entity to take on the Conservatives, CBC News has learned.
Many Liberal insiders confirmed that discussions between the two parties are not just focused on forming a coalition after an election or co-operation before one, but the creation of a new party.
The new party would possibly be named the Liberal Democrats and there has been tentative talk about what a shared platform would look like and an understanding that a race would be required to choose a new leader.
“Serious people are involved in discussions at a serious level,” Warren Kinsella, a former adviser to former prime minister Jean Chrétien, told CBC News.

Kinsella would not say who was involved in the discussions, saying he did not want to “deter” people.
He added that with the Liberals polling at around 25 per cent support, a merger necessitates consideration.
“The reality is that we are in a bad position,” Kinsella said.
“We don’t want to see the Liberal Party of Canada disappear and I’m sure there are a lot of New Democrats who are getting fed up with their fate.”

As always, they could be perfectly right (deflating someone else’s trial balloon) or they could have been rushed into fast forced denials of something that may have substance.
We probably won’t know for a while (after all something has to go into politicians’ and journalists’ memoirs).
The BIGGEST election story of yesterday and possibly a QUARTER century

California voters approved the cockamamie open primary (which could send two Democrats or two Republicans to face each other in November 2012) at the same time they kept the ban on public financing of elections. I put down at least part of this madness to a Republican 2010 primary that was more significant than the Democratic one, in the relative absence of high-profile vote-catching ballot measures.

Ole Sean Hannity was almost in tears when he mentioned that possibility the otehr day. Yeah sounds like Bill Haas here in Missouri. He has run for mayor of St. Louis in every election since 1993, never getting more than single digits in the Dem primary (which is tantamount to winning the election). He did get some national attention in the 2005 race when he pondered committing suicide on his blog (which he later claimed he never seriously considered)
In 2008 he ran for Congress against ultra conservative incumbent Todd Akin and actually won the Dem primary. Of course that district is uber Republican and Haas got the usual 30 some odd % a Dem nominee gets. Still it was quite the feat for him to actually win a primary after all these years!
This year he decided to challenge Akin in the GOP primary. If he gets out of the single digits I’ll be shocked.
Haas is a nice guy, but definitely eccentric. His current job? Greeter at Wal-Mart. That’s with a business degree from Yale.
They should really make a documentary about these perennial longshot candidates. I know I’d see it!

Thousands of Dutch voters used Wednesday’s opportunity to vote in the country’s parliamentary elections at a railway station. According to a representative for Dutch Railways, at least 40,000 people cast their votes at polling booths located in 45 of the country’s railway stations.
At Utrecht’s Central Station, such long lines formed that organisers not only had to set up an extra table to handle all the voters, but also employ a private security guard to ensure that everything remained orderly. At Amsterdam’s Central Station, there was still a long queue as late as 20:00.
Voting at railway stations has taken place before, but only on a small scale. Dutch Railways called the action a success and said it would offer voters the chance to vote at stations in all future elections.

The video stream was awful if you didn’t have high capacity memory and connections; it was overloaded by “Connect It” giving the questions as they were asked; I’ve seen this done far more efficiently by less sophisticated and less power-hungry apps. The TV broadcast also had some engineering glitches, especially sound from URI in southern RI.
I apologize to the former state legislator Victor Moffit (R) for my throwaway comparison in an earlier thread about experience: both Moffit’s Republican opponent, John Robitaille, and the Moderate Party candidate Ken Block made big points about their LACK of experience in elective public office.
Atty-Gen. Patrick Lynch (D) made a few good points but reinforced my dislike of him.
Gen. Treas. Frank Caprio (R) still makes a good impression to me, and is certainly a Democrat, but there are fiscal points where he seems too conservative.
Lincoln Chafee (Ind.), a former Republican Mayor of Warwick and U.S. Senator, still looks like the best of the bunch at this point, although I disagree with him on several policy proposals, such as imposing a 1% sales tax on currently-exempt items such as drugs and newspapers.
As I’ve said before, I wish there were a true left-wing candidate, such as State Rep. David Segal (D, Providence & E. Prov.; formerly Green Party member of Prov. City Council), who’s instead running for the Democratic nomination for Patrick Kennedy’s 1st District Congressional seat. An unambiguous left-winger would make this race less lopsided.
